Galway Football Championship preview

It’s back to club action in Galway this weekend, with the 1/4 finals of the senior and intermediate football championship taking place.

In the senior, there are two attractive double headers taking place on Sunday, in Pearse Stadium in the afternoon and Tuam Stadium in the evening.

First up in Pearse Stadium is Killererin against Michael Breathnachs, a game in which Killererin are hot favourites, but the men from the gaelteacht will be in positive mood, after a convincing 9 point win over Annaghdown in the last round and will fear nothing, but Killererin with a host of county players in action and one P.Joyce scoring 3-7 in the last round, and even allowing for the suspension of Alan Keane, Killererin will be a tough nut to crack here.

The second game in Pearse Stadium see’s Gerry Hughes’ charges Salthill-Knocknacarra take on An Cheathra Rua. The seasiders are fancied to win this, but after being run to the bare minimum in the last round by city rivals, St. Michaels they will have to be on guard against An Cheathra Rua who disposed of last years intermediate champions Kilconly in the last round.

First up in Tuam, we have “the jimmies” against reigning champions and favourites to regain county honours again, Corofin. With a wealth of talent coming through and 3 minor championships and an u-21 title bagged in the last 5 years, St. James could be a team with a bright future ahead, they’ll huff and puff, but just mightn’t have the strength to knock Corofin off the number one spot on the podium.
Finally, the tie of the round, the “shams” v the “scans”, the north Galway derby, Tuam Stars against Milltown, seperated by very little in the betting, this game is a coin toss. Although Tuam were beaten by Corofin in the first round, neither team as conceded a goal to date, so a goal could decide this game, and whoever scores the first goal could just about shade this one, but I wouldn’t rule out the draw.

In the Intermediate, there are two games down for decision on Saturday, followed by two more on Sunday. On Saturday, Dunmore and Oughterard are taken to overcome Athenry and Corofin respectively, while on Sunday a close encounter is expected between this years all-Ireland junior champions Clonbur and Monivea-Abbey, and in the final intermediate game of the weekend, Menlough should repeat their earlier success over the men from Carna-Cashel…
