Galway Plate 2012 : Review and Result

Updated: August 2, 2012

Tom Mullins enjoyed success at the big spring festivals and his winning run has stretched into high summer as his Bob Lingo stormed late through the mud to land the spoils in the Galway Plate.

It was a sweet win for jockey Mark Walsh who had to suffer the agony of losing close home in the race on Wise Old Owl last year. Winning owner JP McManus celebrated seeing his colours carried to victory in the week’s most prestigious race for the second time in two years.

In testing conditions, Walsh conserved every ounce of Bob Lingo’s stamina and clung to the inside rail during the draining two miles and six furlongs contest. Paul Townend made a bold bid to make all in the conditions and set sail for home two out on Casey Top but Cross Appeal tracked his every move.

Walsh quietly maneuvered Bob Lingo into contention and early in the straight he steered the 16-1 shot through a lovely split that opened up between the leading pair. Bob Lingo has form over further and in the testing ground he powered home from his floundering rivals. Casey Top demonstrated real courage to plug on for second while Blackstairmountain and Ruby Walsh stayed on dourly for third.

It was Mullins’ first victory in the summer jumping highlight and he was delighted to add the Galway Plate to his ever expanding CV.

“It’s absolutely fantastic, a great day, I couldn’t believe it. I haven’t won the Plate before, I thought I had a good chance last year with Dr Whizz but he just hit a lull so it’s nice to win it this year.”
Mullins is a shrewd judge of promising horses and Bob Lingo is another one of his stars that he picked out of the sales ring himself. Victory in the Plate saw his and McManus richly rewarded for their patience with him.
“He’s a lovely horse, I bought him myself at Goffs, I know he’s a 10-year-old now but we’re just getting to know him.”
“He’s a very difficult horse to train but I felt he was never as fit or as well recently. He can be very hard on himself at home but I felt he was really well coming here.”
“He had a great run in Killarney and did a lap of the track afterwards! My only worry was whether he would hold his form as he’s had a long season,” added the happy winning trainer.
Mullins paid tribute to Mark Walsh, adding that without his knowledge and understanding of Bob Lingo they wouldn’t be celebrating a Galway winner. Walsh was thrilled to finally cross the winning line in front after being so cruelly denied last year.
“That was brilliant and it made up for last year. I sat a bit longer this year and waited until they turned into the straight. He was brilliant. They went a good gallop and that’s what he needs. He needs a strong gallop and in that soft ground he’ll gallop through it like no other horse. He jumped brilliantly. It was a little bit dodgy with the loose getting in my way five and four out but he got me out of trouble,” explained the thrilled winning rider. Galway Plate (Grade A) of €200000.00 4-y-o plus
