Glasgow Celtic will have to plan without Emilio Izaguirre for their UEFA Europa League play-off tie against FC Sion after the Honduras left-back fractured his right ankle.
Izaguirre(25) was Scotland’s player of the year last season, but suffered the injury in Celtic’s 1-0 win at Aberdeen FC on Sunday. With a an estimated recovery period of between four to six months, Izaguirre would be unavailable for the UEFA Europa League group stage if the Scottish side win their play-off tie against FC Sion.
“It’s a huge blow for us to lose him and we don’t know how long he is going to be out for,” said Celtic manager Neil Lennon. “He is being assessed at the minute and we’ll know whether he requires surgery. If he does he will be out for three months anyway. We might have to look at getting another left-back in.”
