Good run from Britton in Spain

Fionnuala Britton continued her return to her good form when she finished a close fourth in a top quality International cross-country event in Burgos in Northern Spain yesterday November 6th

It was only in the very closing stages of the 6,000 metres event that the Wicklow runner lost out on third place to Hannah Gatheu of Kenya having run with the leaders virtually from the start while several top runners from Spain and Portugal were left behind the leading group on a fast course.

Victory went to former double world junior champion Genzebe Diaba of Ethiopia who said after her win that she hoped to be back in Spain next March for the World Cross-Country Championships, a race she has won four times in the past

26 year old Britton will be equally excited about her prospects in the European Cross Country Championships in Portugal on December 12th when she will be hoping to win her second medal at the Championships and add to the Under 23 silver she collected in 2006.

Two months ago Britton changed coaches and her running career is now being guided by Chris Jones.

“Fionnuala ran a really great race and looks as if she is coming right back to her best form” said Irish Manager, Ann Keenan-Buckley. “The team needed that run after the injury to Mary Cullen and Fionnuala will be even better by the Europeans.”

Dan Mulhare from Laois was the best of Irish men, finishing in 20th place in a top-class field, while his brother Mick was just behind in 23rd position. National Cross Country champion Mark Kenneally, and top Irishman in the Euro Cross last year, suffered an injury to his back and struggled to get to the finish. This will be a disappointment for Mark who has only recently returned to top form again.
