Light Heavy put the end to the Coolmore dominance at Leopardstown on Sunday with a stylish success in the Group 3 P.W. McGrath Memorial Ballysax Stakes.
The Jim Bolger trained son of Teofilo gave his trainer a second successive in the Derby trial having landed the prize twelve months ago with high class mare Banimpire.
The two Ballydoyle outsiders, Athens and Tower Rock, took the field along at a steady gallop with 7/4 favourite David Livingston held up near the rear by Joseph O’Brien.
Athens was the first to commit for home and went two lengths up around the final bend. Kevin Manning and Light Heavy were alive to the move and Manning asked his mount to catch Athens, which he did in impressive style to beat the running on Call To Battle and Johnny Murtagh with Tower Rock back in third.
Winning trainer Jim Bolger was content with the victory saying “He will take the Curragh route. All been well he will come back here for the Derinnstown Stud Derby Trial next month.
“We have always liked him. He is a laid back horse but does what he has to do when you ask him”
