Boxing fans are in for a treat on Wednesday (20th) when  an Irish Amateur Third-level Boxing Association  selection will take on a Defence Forces squad at The National Stadium (7 pm). Admission for the show will be just €5. It would be great to have as much support as possible  for this match, which all concerned  would like to see become a regular and anticipated event.

The tournament  with the Defence Forces will influence the selection of boxers for future student boxing international matches.

The strength of IATBA boxing can be gauged just by glancing at the recent IATBA Championships final results:

Senior:

54Kg Lily de la Cour (UCC) beat Daria Lach (Cavan Institute) (Majority decision.)

66Kg Clare Grace (DCU) beat Amanda Coughlan ( IT Tralee) (Unanimous)

60Kg Deirdre Begley (UCC) beat Maria Faney (IT Sligo) (Unan.)

60KG Noel Kehoe (IT Carlow)  lost to Lee Boyd (LyIT) (Unan.)

64KG Keith Gallagher (IT Sligo) beat Rohan Date (WIT) (Maj.)

69Kg Craig Mc Carthy (WIT) lost to Michael Bustard (Trinity) (Unan.)

81KG Eamon Tighe (NUIG) lost to Steven O’Reilly (LyIT) (Unan.)

52KG Thomas J. Waite W/O

75KG Ryan Dervan (NUIG) W/O

91KG James Kelly (IT Carlow) W/O

91+KG David Timlin (GMIT) W/O

Several have represented their country at International level, be at Youth, Junior or Senior level  whilst  Callan’s Clare Grace is the 2013 Irish Elite (Senior) women’s champion and one of the great hopes for the future in Irish women’s boxing.

The Defence Forces too have some outstanding boxers including Grangecon’s Ross Hickey and Sunnyside’s Patrick O’Shea
