Irish fighter John Joe Nevin tops the World Series of Boxing (WSB) bantamweight rankings, in the wake of his win for Paris United over Milan’s Vitaliy Volkov in Paris on Friday night.
Nevin won a unanimous decision over the Ukrainian as Paris defeated the Italians 4-1 to move three points ahead in their WSB European Team Championships group after six matches. Nevins win was his third victory from three bouts in the WSB Team Championships which is decided over 12 matches.
The two highest ranked fighters in the bantamweight, lightweight, middleweight, light-heavyweight and heavyweight from the Team Championships qualify for the WSB Individual Championships. That competition has five Olympic places as the ultimate prize.
With Nevin currently topping the bantamweight ranking, if he qualifies for the WSB Individual Championships then he will need just one more victory to win his place at the London Olympics.
