Kilkenny officials have confirmed that the side are to appeal JJ Delaney’s red card picked up in the Allianz Hurling League win over Cork in Nowlan Park at the weekend.
Delaney was sent off after receiving a second yellow card in the last quarter as his side held a 0-12 to 0-8 lead.
Selector Martin Fogarty said that they will seek to have the red card rescinded.
Fogarty would not elaborate but it is understood they are challenging both yellow cards, with a suggestion that the first may have been a case of mistaken identity.
Kilkenny officials have reviewed the video and are satisfied they have sufficient grounds for a case.
While Delaney won’t receive a suspension for the red card, if he picks up another red for two similar yellow-card offences in the next 12 months he would serve a two-week ban. That’s a risk that Kilkenny are not willing to take and they are anxious to have his name cleared.
