Laois earned a 1-15 to 1-10 victory over Armagh in the Allianz Football league Division 1 on Sunday.
Ten players got on the score sheet for Laois, with Cahillane top scoring with 1-1 and Begley and Tierney adding three points apiece.
Laois led by three points at the interval, but the crucial incident of the match happened at half-time when Armagh’s Ciaran McKeever was sent off.
Armagh got off to a good start and took the lead after points from Brian Mallon and Aidan Forker. Laois regrouped and took the lead after two points from Colm Begley and scores from MJ Tierney and Billy Sheehan.
Armagh responded with a McFarland point, but three more scores from Mark Timmons, MJ Tierney and Ross Munnelly gave Laois a four point lead. Armagh reduced the arrears to three points before the break but entered the interval losing 0-4 to 0-7.
McKeever’s dismissal shook Armagh and Laois immediately took advantage. The Leinster team scored five quick points to give them a 0-12 to 0-4 lead, while Laois goalkeeper Cullitoin saved well from Finian Moriarty.
The situation looked bleak for 14-man Armagh, but Caolan Raffery rattled the back of the Laois net to give the Orchard County a slight hope of a comeback.
Armagh added four points while Laois scored one to reduce Laois’ lead to 0-13 to 1-8. Paul Cahillane scored a goal to end the match as a contest in the 63rd minute, however.
The victory was Laois’ second of the season but the Leinster County remain in seventh. Armagh are now bottom of the table with three points from their opening five matches.
