Mayo 1-13 Down 3-7

Mayo and Down shared the points in an exciting encounter in the first floodlit NFL clash at McHale Park.

Marty and John Clarke led the way for the visitor scoring 2-4 between them in the opening half. The Mourne men were by far the better side in the early exchanges and led 2-5 to 1-4 at the break. Alan Freeman hit the crucial Mayo goal to keep his side in touch.

Down’s third goal was scored by Peter Fitzpatrick but Mayo responded with a number of points and throughly deserved a share of the spoils. Andy Moran hit six for the home side, including the levelling score in the final minute.
