Mayo ,who had already qualified for the ‘FBD Insurance’ League final, overcame Roscommon 0-14 to 1-9 at Ballinlough on Sunday. Mayo now meet N.U.I.G in the final.
The visitors looked the likely winners for most of this match but a goal from Kevin Higgins together with points from John Rogers and Donie Shine helped the Rossies to level the scores with but two minutes on the watch.
Pat Harte and Ger Heneghan exchanged opening the scores of the game before Alan Freeman and goalkeeper David Clarke (from a 45) gave the visitors a 0-3 to 0-1 lead after quarter of an hour’s play.
Conor Mortimer contributed four first-half points for Mayo, whilst only Ger Heneghan with his second point added to the Rossies total as Mayo lead 0-7 to 0-2 at half time.
Higgins’ goal with eight minutes left really brought the game to life with Donie Shine and John Rogers also to the fore. Another Rogers point made it 0-12 to 1-8 before Shine equalised from a 45 . That was to be their last score though as James Horan’s men wrapped it up with last gasp points from substitute Barry Moran and Alan Dillon.
