News today that an agreement has finally been reached and contracts signed for Amir Khan to defend his W.B.A Light Welterweight title against Dungiven’s , Paul ‘ Dudey’ McCloskey, on April 16th at the M.E.N Arena in Manchester.

Earlier negotiations had broken down some two weeks ago.

“I am delighted that this fight has finally been put together,” said Khan.

McCloskey’s manager Francie McNicholl confirmed to BBC Sport that contracts had been signed.

The McCloskey camp were unhappy at the financial terms being offered to their fighter but McNicholl said that the Irishman had been given “an improved deal”.

“All contracts were signed late on Saturday night,” said McNicholl.

“After receiving the improved offer, we are now delighted that the fight is going to happen.”

McCloskey described the fight as the “massive opportunity I have been waiting for all my career”.

“I’m thrilled for the many fans who will be able to travel over to Manchester for the fight.

“I am absolutely confident that I will be world champion.”

Khan and McCloskey will attend a press conference in Manchester on Tuesday and then move on l to Belfast for a further media photo opportunity on Wednesday.

McCloskey won his first European belt in November 2009 with a ninth- round win over Spain’s Daniel Rasilla and has defended the title twice in 2010 ,to take his unbeaten record to 22 fights.

What a difference a week makes! Only last week McCloskey’s UK promoter Barry Hearn informed the media:

“The deals placed on the table were an insult to Paul, an undefeated fighter and a European champion. Amir cannot fight himself, and I’m afraid you have to pay opponents to step in the ring with you, and pay them fairly”

Writing on his Team Khan Blog today, the Bolton fighter has this to say:-

“I am delighted that this fight has finally been put together following some tough negotiations. This is a matchup the British public want to see and will be a fantastic fight between two of the best light-welterweights in the country.”

Khan will leave for his US training camp on the 9th of February following press conferences in Manchester and Belfast.

McCloskey’s many Irish fans will be able to book fight tickets on his official website
