Tiger Woods has jokingly started calling Rory McIlroy “The Intimidator” but the world number has laughed off suggestions that Woods is scared of him.
“No, how can I intimidate Tiger Woods? I mean, the guy’s got 70-whatever PGA Tour wins, 14 majors – he’s been the biggest thing ever in our sport.”
He was responding to a claim by former world number Greg Norman the Woods felt intimidated by the 23 year old from Co Down.
Norman told foxsports.com: “What I’m seeing is that Tiger’s really intimidated by Rory. I think he knows his time is up.”
Woods and McIlroy have been paired together in this weekend’s Tour Championship, the last leg of the Fed Ex Cup. The pair are first and second in the leaderboard and are fighting it out for the $10 million prize cheque.
McIlroy laughingly responded to Norman’s suggestion: “How could some little 23-year-old from Northern Ireland with a few wins come up and intimidate him? It’s just not possible. I don’t know where he (Norman) got that from, but it’s not true.”
While McIlroy does not believe that Tiger is frightened of him, the two time Major winner has never been intimidated by one of the greatest golfers of all time.
“I don’t think intimidated is the right word – more just in awe of his achievements, but never intimidated,” he added
