Monaleen take on Newcastlewest in the Limerick County Senior Football Final, at the Gaelic Grounds on Sunday afternoon at 3.30pm. The former will be hot favourites to take the crown, having far more experience at this stage of the competition in recent seasons.
Newcastlewest will be appearing in their first senior decider since 2004 and are bidding to take their first title at this level since 1992.
The side defeated Dromcollogher/Broadford in the semi-final and two points to spare on that occasion. In the second semi-final, Monaleen had it easier, beating Fr Casey’s by 1-10 to 0-8.
The current title holders, are led by inter county star Ger Collins, and have a potent attack. It will take a mammoth effort from the underdogs to cause an upset this weekend.
However, NCW have been dogged in all their games this season and never know when they are beaten.
They had to come from behind to defeat St Kierans in the earlier rounds, and with Stephen Kelly leading the way, they will not go down without a real fight. Monaleen can be overcome, as Adare showed earlier in the season, and they will need to be at their very best to make it two in a row on Sunday.
However, at the end of the day, Monaleen are the reigning champions and are there to be overthrown. Until that day comes, they have to remain the side to beat and therefore they are given the vote to edge the match and make it back to back titles
