The Gunners are in their 15th straight Champions League group stage, while Montpellier were playing in the second division just two years ago.
There are signs that success may not be a lasting feature for the French side as they are already struggling in league and are missing the goals of Olivier Giroud who joined Arsenal during the summer.
Like Giroud, his replacement Emanuel Herrera is struggling to make much of an impression so far though not through his own failings, last season’s form has eluded attacking midfielder Younis Belhanda so far and Montpellier have won only one of their first five games.
Arsenal looked limp in their opening matches too but seem to have found their scoring form and put six past Southampton on Saturday as their new attacking players overran the Saints’ defence.
Montpellier captain Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa was rested at the weekend and midfielder Remy Cabella looks set to start as well.
Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny is sidelined with an ankle injury with Vito Mannone, who started the season as the club’s fifth choice keeper, stepping in.
Jack Wilshere, Bacary Sagna, Tomas Rosicky and Emmanuel Frimpong will also miss the opening game of the group.
