O’Kane steals the Thunder in Milan WSB debut

Dungiven’s 28 years old middleweight Eamon O’Kane who led Northern Ireland to Commonwealth Gold in Delhi, gained new admirers in Milan , beating Turkey’s Onder Sipal in his World Series of Boxing debut, as Milano Thunder beat David Oliver Joyce’s Istanbulls 3-1 in the WSB European group.

The win lifts Milano Thunder two points clear of John Joe Nevin’s Paris United, who have a match in hand over the Italian side.
Following a closely contested opening round , O’Kane, the current Commonwealth champion and 2008 European bronze medallist, rocked Sipal with a right hook en route to an unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 50-45).
World champion Domenico Valentino, ( who was beaten by St Michael’s Athy team-mates Eric Donovan and David Oliver Joyce last year) and Vincenzo Picardi, also recorded wins for the Milano Thunder.
Speaking after his win, O’Kane. who boxes out of the Immaculata BC, said he was delighted with the victory.
“This was my first match in the WSB and I think I showed everybody what my qualities are as a boxer. The public was fantastic tonight and gave me a lot of power to fight with more energy.
“I arrived in Milan a few days ago but everybody in the team and in the staff welcomed me and helped me to achieve tonight’s victory.”
