Perfect Preparation for Ireland’s Cricketers

Updated: September 17, 2012

Ireland warmed up for their opening World Twenty20 clash against Australia with a narrow five run victory over Bangladesh. The Irish have had the perfect preparation with four wins from four games since they arrived in Sri Lanka.

Bangladesh are the highest ranked opponents Ireland have played as they prepare for the tournament but the Irish team continued its winning run.

Opening batsman Paul Stirling was the star of the show, scoring 71 off just 41 balls as Ireland made 164 for 6. Ed Joyce also chipped in with a solid 39 to steady the ship. The pair teamed up to make 64 before Stirlin was bowled out by Elias Sunny.

Bangladesh responded well when it was their turn to bat. Tamim Iqbaal and Shakib al Hasan made a rapid fire 63 before Iqbaal was caught out by Alex Cusack. Al Hasan soon followed, though not before he made an eye catching 52.

Kevin O’Brien took three wickets in only two overs and although Bangladesh’s tail showed good fight and made a decent knock, their final tally of 159 for 9 fell just short.

Ireland take on Australia, who are now ranked one place below the Irish, on Wednesday. The Aussies lost their final warm up game against England in Colombo by nine runs.
