A rampant Sligo Rovers put eight goals past a lacklustre Galway United on Friday. Matthew Blinkhorn was the pick of the performers for Sligo, scoring a hat trick.
The win was Sligo’s biggest ever victory over the Tribesmen and maintained Rovers’ slender lead at the top of the Airtricity League.
Sligo led from the fifth minute, with Eoin Doyle scoring from inside the box. Richie Ryan’s powerful shot then doubled the lead on 16 minutes, while Raf Cretaro scored in the 34th minute after good work from Blinkhorn.
The hammer blow for Galway came in the 36th minute, when Eduardo Dusi received his marching orders for a second yellow card.
Blinkhorn scored two quick fire goals before the interval to leave Sligo with an unassailable 5-0 half-time. The Sligo man then completed his hat-trick in the 74th minute.
A late own goal from Paul Sinnott and a goal from Eoin Doyle helped Sligo run out convincing 8-0 victors.
