Robbie Keane’s club boss says striker lacks confidence

Updated: March 16, 2012

LA Galaxy Head Coach Bruce Arena has said Irish striker Robbie Keane is lacking confidence.

The former US national team boss’ statement comes after the Dubliner missed a couple of good goalscoring opportunities during  Wednesday’s  1-2  CONCACAF Champions League defeat to FC Toronto.

Galaxy were hotly fancied to progress after securing a 2-2 draw in Canada but the visitors did enough in the end to progress.  Keane missed a couple of good second half chances; particularly so late on when through one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

“He’s lost a little confidence,” said Arena. “He’s had some chances in these past three games.  You lose your confidence a little bit.  He’s going to have to get it back real quick.”

The Tallaght native returned to Los Angelas following an impressive loan spell with Aston Villa where he scored three goals in six Premier League games.

That form has apparently not transferred back across the Atlantic however with him having failed to score in three games since returning to Los Angelas.

There are now two months remaining until he meets up with the Ireland squad for Euro 2012 and Irish fans will be hoping he can find that killer touch between now and then.
