Waterford IT and UCC will face off in the Ashbourne Cup final for the second successive year after both colleges had impressive victories in today’s semi-finals in Dangan.
Defending champions Waterford continued their march to an historic three-in-a-row of titles putting four goals past 2006 winners UL.
Their forward power was the difference between the sides with Denise Gaule grabbing 2-2, Michelle Quilty scoring 1-3 and substitute Caitriona Shortt adding to the 4-9 to 0-6 victory with the final goal in the 45th minute.
University College Cork were also impressive booking their place in Sunday’s final in Pearse Stadium.After an impressive first half that the they edged by 0-5 to 0-3, UCC improved after the resumption, with Fionnuala Carr, Orla Cotter and Katrina Mackey all showing fine form up front.
In the Ashbourne Shield, NUI Galway will play Cork IT in Sunday’s final after both were winners in Dangan’s lower pitch.NUI Galway had Shonagh Enright to thank for getting them through against UUJ in the first game of the day by 1-7 to 0-9, while Cork IT had an easy 3-18 to 3-03 victory over Athlone IT.
Meanwhile, in the Purcell Cup DCU and Queens University beat Mary I (2-6 to 0-4) and IT Tralee (2-7 to 3-1) respectively to reach Sunday’s decider.In the shield competition, Purcell Cup holders DIT will meet Trinity College Dublin in the final after comprehensively seeing off Carlow IT (5-15 to 2-05) and GMIT (10-14 to 2-03) respectively.
