Basketball Ireland has just announced that Setanta Sports has become the association’s Television partner for the next three years.
Previous partner, RTE decided recently it could not afford to commit to a new contract due to financial restraints and having to provide coverage of the 2012 Olympic Games and Euro 2012, a decision that provoked much annoyance within the sports loving community and many angry letters to media editors throughout the country.
Today’s good news is a massive boost for the sport and in the immediacy ensures that the 2012 National Cup finals, featuring the Men’s and Women’s SuperLeague Cup finals, will be broadcast live on Friday, February 3rd 2012.
The partnership will also see a regular basketball magazine show and also the possibility of the 2012 National League Finals featuring live on Television.
Welcoming the development, Basketball Ireland Secretary General Bernard O’Byrne said; “This is a tremendous day for the sport. I applaud Setanta Sports’ vision in recognizing that basketball is one of our national games and is played by tens of thousands of people who are involved in Basketball in every community across the 32 counties of Ireland.
“I urge all the Basketball community to support Setanta Sports in their efforts as we look forward to a fantastic night of basketball on Friday, February 3rd at the National Basketball Arena. “I would like to pay credit to Setanta Sports and in particular their CEO Colin Morgan for being so pro active and supportive in ensuring that our National Cup Finals will receive the live coverage the competition so richly deserves. The Irish Sports Council has had a big role in making this happen and I thank them for their support.”
Setanta CEO Colin Morgan said: “Setanta are delighted to broadcast the finals. Basketball is an incredibly popular sport in Ireland with huge participation levels among men and women so it would have been a shame if the finals were not televised. As Ireland’s only dedicated sports broadcaster we have the resources to accommodate important Irish sport in our schedules. We expect this to be just the beginning of a long relationship with Basketball Ireland and we look forward to working together.”
This year’s Men’s SuperLeague National Cup finals will see UL Eagles take on UCC Demons (21:15 Tip:Off), while UL are also represented in the Women’s SuperLeague National Cup finals where they will face holders DCU Mercy (19:15).
