St Brigid’s (Roscommon) 0-13 Nemo Rangers (Cork) 1-8
St. Brigid’s from Roscommon are through to their first ever AIB All-Ireland Club Senior Football Championship final, after shocking Nemo Rangers in the semi final at the Gaelic Grounds on Saturday.
The Munster champions were not helped by having two players sent out. The first dismissal was of major significance when midfielder David Niblock was shown a second yellow card for an awkward tackle early in the second half.
Corner back Aidan O’Reilly also saw red in injury-time, but by that stage St. Brigid’s had the game wrapped up.Gearoid Cunniffe moved upfield with three minutes remaining to fire St Brigid’s in front and Senan Kilbride put over an insurance point from a late free.
The Cork side led by a point,1-8 to 0-10, at one stage but the task of playing with 14 men for all bar six minutes of the second half took its toll.
St Brigid’s made the better start but hit two wides, including one scorable free, and they found themselves behind after James Masters hit a free for Nemo.
Kilbride scored to balance that out and while St. Brigid’s continued to dominate, they could only manage a point from Karol Mannion.
In the 12th minute, Masters slipped taking a sideline kick and the ball ended in the Brigid’s square where Sean O’Brien knocked the ball past Philip Martin for the game’s only goal. The teams were level a minute later when Darren Dolan had a point which curled in at the last minute.
Nemo took a 1-4 to 0-5 lead into the break. Paul Kerrigan was wide with a free from near the touchline, just minutes into the second half, and Brigids added a point from Eoin Sheehy.
The sending-off of Niblock changed the game and while Masters added another free it was only a matter of time before the extra man began to tell in Brigids favour. Frankie Dolan played the link man role with great effect, winning a number of breaking balls and setting up attacks.
Alan Cronin had Nemo 1-08 to 0-10 in front with six minutes remaining but Cunniffe and Kilbride made sure of a famous win for Noel O’Brien’s side.
Full-forward Kilbride hit six points and was his sides star man. James Masters pointed six frees for Nemo, but it was not enough and the Roscommon side held out for an incredible upset.
