Philip Fenton has admitted that time is running out for Dunguib’s proposed comeback in the Red Mills Hurdle at Gowran Park on February 12.
The hugely impressive winner of the 2009 Festival Bumper, Dunguib acquitted himself creditably over flights last season, including when a close third in the Supreme Novices Hurdle, to the subsequent improver, Menorah. The latter is currently quoted second favourite in most books for the Champion Hurdle.
A poor blood test ruled Dunguib out of a comeback at Leopardstown last weekend and Fenton admitted:
“We’re beginning to panic a little bit that he won’t be ready for the Red Mills, and we won’t be able to run him before Cheltenham.”
Fenton surprised racing fans by stating that Dunguib would be given an entry for the Coral Cup, a handicap over two miles and five furlongs,at the Cheltenham Festival.
