Van Persie inspires Manchester United victory

Updated: October 3, 2012

Robin Van Persie scored twice as United came from behind to beat CFR Cluj 2-1 and take a considerable step towards the last 16 of the Champions League.

The Dutchman, who has now scored seven goals in eight appearances for Manchester United since making the move in August, scored either side of half-time to help United recover after they fell behind in the 14th through Pantelis Kapetanos.

With a half hour nearly gone in the match, Wayne Rooney’s free-kick granted Van Persie for the equaliser for United. However, it had more than an element of luck about it, with the ball looping into the net off Van Persie’s shoulder.

Four minutes into the second half and Van Persie had his second when Wayne Rooney’s floated pass was excellently flicked in by the Dutchman into the bottom corner to put United ahead in Romania. This was the first time that Rooney and Van Persie had been paired together from the start and the pass and finish from this move could be a sign of things to come from the duo.

Manchester United controlled the rest of the game without making any serious opportunities and they could have paid for it when David De Gea made a superb stop in injury time to save Rafeal Bastos’s powerful near-post header.

Despite the win, Sir Alex Ferguson was far from pleased about the way his side conceded, describing Cluj’s goal as an “absolute shocker.”

“Coming away from home in Europe is never easy, they have a good home record here and you can see why from the way they kept going, hitting so many telling crosses that kept us under pressure. But I have got to be pleased with the possession. We defended well apart from the goal and David De Gea made a good save late on.”

Robin Van Persie also said that he’s pleased with his start at Manchester United but he expects more from himself in future, especially when helping his teammates.

“I think I am on the way to settling in well,” the 29 year-old said. “I would like to make more assists. It is not only about goals but I want to make more assists. I would like to improve that. I am on a good run but I would like to do better.
