Eddie Hearn has arranged for Katie Taylor to fight in November. The 34-year-old will take to the ring less than three months after her rematch with Delfine Persoon in August.
Taylor’s opponent will be 37-year-old Spaniard Miriam Gutierrez. Gutierrez called for the fight as far back as March. Furthermore, she has been vocal about her admiration for Taylor. Previously, she praised the Bray fighter for her past successes. In addition to this, she said “I would like to fight against the greatest, which is Katie Taylor”.
Gutierrez only turned professional three years ago. Since then, she has accumulated an undefeated record in her 13 fights. These include 5 knock-out wins. Gutierrez, nicknamed ‘La Reina’, combines her boxing with her role as councilor for women of the Partido Popular in the Torrejón City Hall outside Madrid. She was the subject of domestic violence when she was just 21 and eight months pregnant. As a result, she works against gender violence in Spain.
Last November, Gutierrez claimed the interim WBA belt by defeating the Venezuelan Keren Batiz. Therefore, Taylor must fight Gutierrez next.
Speaking to Boxing Social Website Matchroom, Eddie Hearn stated “Katie Taylor has to fight her WBA mandatory next, which is (Miriam) Gutierrez. That will be on a stand-alone card in November that will be announced shortly.”
November 14th is the date earmarked for the fight. Sky Sports will broadcast the bout. Otherwise, DAZN are broadcasting the game for US viewers. No venue has been confirmed yet. But, the fixture will likely take place in the UK. Therefore, it will also be behind closed doors in accordance with government guidelines.
Taylor on top of her game
There will be two other title fights on the card. Initially, Eddie Hearn was planning for an all-women’s card but the Bray Bomber was not a fan of the idea.
“I spoke to Katie Taylor about an all-women’s card. I thought that was a really good idea. Katie Taylor looked at me like she wanted to punch me when I said that. When I started thinking about it, I understand what’s she’s saying.
“What they’re fighting for, away from the world championship, is equality. It’s not women’s boxing and men’s boxing – it’s boxing.”
Last month, Taylor fought Belgian Delfine Persoon in Essex. The rematch came after the Irish fighter’s win in Madison Square Garden last year was followed by controversy. Taylor won on a majority decision. Yet, many others marked the fight in Persoon’s favour. However, this time Persoon accepted that she was well beaten.
That win stretched Taylor’s record to 17-0 (6 KOs). She holds the WBC, WBA, IBF, WBO, and Ring Magazine Lightweight world titles.
Miriam Gutierrez is no dark horse for Katie Taylor to fight in November. It will be a proper test for the 2012 Olympic Gold Medallist.
