Irish horses, trainers and jockeys consistently succeed atinternational level. For instance, in 2020, Irish-trained horses claimed victory in Group One races across five continents, including prestigious events like the Melbourne Cup, Derby and multiple Breeders’ Cup races. Horse racing betting is also popular among 50% of Irish adults which highlights its widespread appeal.

With iconic racecourses throughout the country, horse racing in Ireland is a beloved activity that brings together people from diverse backgrounds.

Horse racing also plays a significant role in Ireland’s booming tourism industry, drawing visitors from around the globe to experience this exhilarating sport. Horse racing in Ireland attracts approximately 80,000 tourists each year.

The Legacy of Horse Racing in Ireland

Horse racing is one of the most popular sports in Ireland.Horse racing in Ireland is not merely a sport; it’s a deeply integrated in the nation’s culture and social identity. Horse racing in Ireland dates back over a thousand years as early as the 3rd century AD. For centuries, the horse has been celebrated in literature and art, with horse racing standing as one of Ireland’s most cherished traditions.

However, the sport evolved significantly during the 18th and 19th centuries. The Curragh, one of the oldest and most iconic racecourses, has been a hub of horse racing since at least the 1700s. Because these races demand speed and stamina, it sparked a revolution in horse breeding in Ireland. And therefore, today, Ireland is a global leader in the breeding and training of racehorses. Ireland boasts a reputation for producing world-class thoroughbreds.

As a result of these high-quality horses, jockey and racingevents, more than 1.3 million people attend the races in person every year in Ireland. Ireland hosts around 2,000 races annually, attracting both domestic and international spectators.

Top Horse Racing events in Ireland

The country hosts numerous prestigious racing events, including The Irish Derby festival. It is the biggest horse racing event in Ireland and held annually at the Curraghracecourse. It was first started in 1866 and is a Grioup 1 flat horse race and is over 2400 metres long. This race takes place every year in late June or early July. This event is part of the Irish Classics and attracts top talent from the world.

The Punchestown Festival is another premier horse racing event in Ireland. This is also held annually at the Punchestown Racecourse in County Kildare, Leinster. It serves as the grand finale of the National Hunt racing season. The festival spans five days and attracts world-class horses, jockeys, and trainers. It is considered as the Irish version of the UK’s famous Cheltenham Festival and is run in a very similar format.

Irish Champion Stakes is another popular racing event in Ireland. It is a Group 1 flat horse race and takes place in September. It is open to horses aged three years or older. It is run at Leopardstown, Leinster over a distance of 1 mile and 2 furlongs (approximately 2012 metres). This event was established in the year 1976.

Galway Races is a week-long festival held annually in July in Ballybrit at the Galway Racecourse. The visit of His Holiness Pope John Paul II to Galway in September 1979 is one of the most memorable moments in the history of Galway. Around 150,000 people attend the week-long festival in Galway each year.

And with the rise of online betting websites, horse racing has become accessible to a global audience. Some of the popular betting websites and mobile apps offer live streaming, local suited promos and in-depth analytics of the races.

Future Champion Apprentice Jockey Dylan O’Connor Signs with Halford/Collins

Irish pony racing sensation Dylan O’Connor has taken a major step towards his professional jockey dreams, signing on as an apprentice with the renowned training partnership of Mick Halford and Tracey Collins. The Liscarroll native, who has already established himself as a multiple champion in the competitive world of pony racing, bowed out of the grassroots circuit in emphatic style with a memorable victory on the brilliant Hasta La Vista.

Riding in the 15hh race over one mile, Dylan and Hasta La Vista produced a commanding performance, routing the opposition in what was a fitting swansong for both jockey and horse. Hasta La Vista, a dual Dingle winner owned by Dylan’s mother, Mags, has been a cornerstone of the young rider’s success, and their final outing together proved a fitting end to a remarkable chapter.

Dylan’s decision to join Halford and Collins marks the beginning of a new journey in the world of professional horse racing. The training duo, who bring a wealth of experience and success in the flat racing scene, are known for nurturing young talent and giving apprentices the opportunities needed to flourish. For Dylan, the move signals a transition from local champion to an exciting new prospect on the national and international stage.

The jockey’s signing has generated significant buzz within racing circles, with many tipping him as a future champion apprentice. His pony racing accolades, including multiple titles and standout performances at high-profile events such as Dingle, showcase not only his technical ability but also the determination and poise needed to excel under pressure.

Speaking about the transition, Dylan said, “I’ve loved every moment of my pony racing career, but now it’s time to take the next step. Signing with Mick Halford and Tracey Collins is a dream come true, and I’m excited to learn from the best as I begin my journey as an apprentice jockey.”

As Dylan embarks on this new chapter, the Irish racing community will no doubt watch his progress with great interest. For now, fans can celebrate the legacy of his pony racing career, capped by that win on Hasta La Vista, and look forward to what promises to be a bright future in professional racing.

The festive period is always chocked full of sporting spectacles, and this year is certainly no exception.

But while all eyes may be on the Alexander Palace and Riyadh’s latest foray into the circle, there is plenty more than that just around the corner. The opening weeks and months of 2025 have plenty to offer sports fans both at home and overseas, so let’s take a look at what’s in store.

Cheltenham Festival

The Cheltenham Festival is without question one of the highlights of the sporting calendar. Taking place in early March, there is plenty to look forward to across the Irish Sea. On day one, it’s the Champion Hurdle that takes centre stage, and Constitution Hill will be looking to reclaim his crown.

In 2024, the former’s reigning champion was unable to defend his crown, having to be withdrawn in the days leading up to the race due to a lung infection. In 2025, he is expected to be back, and he will be gunning for the newly minted king State Man. Looking at today’s racing odds for the showpiece festival, it’s clear that the two horses are already on everyone’s mind, with Constitution Hill being made a 7/2 second favourite and State Man narrowly behind at 9/2.

But if either of them hopes to reign supreme, they will have to find a way to navigate their way passed the 7/4 frontrunner Lossiemouth. Last year’s racing results from the festival saw the French horse reign supreme in the Mares Hurdle and now, she has her eyes set on the top prize. Whether she gets the job done remains to be seen.

Liverpool’s Quest for the Quadruple

Despite the resurgence of the League of Ireland in recent years, English clubs Liverpool and Manchester United remain the Emerald Isle’s most supported. While the latter of that duo is looking toward a prosperous new future under Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim, the former have their sights set on a quadruple for the third time in recent years.

Back in 2022, the Reds won both the FA Cup and the League Cup, but they missed out on the Premier League on the final day of the season, as well as losing the UEFA Champions League final to Real Madrid. Last season, their hopes made it toward the latter part of the season, but their momentum faltered following their FA Cup quarter-final exit against Manchester United.

Now, however, new manager Arne Slot has got the Merseysiders playing football that former boss Jurgen Klopp could have only dreamed of. And with the Dutch boss’ tactics being less physically demanding than that of his predecessor, there’s real hope that The Reds’ unprecedented quadruple hunt could go all the way. They are already through to the latter stages of the League Cup, while they sit at the top of both the Premier League and the Champions League.

Can they now go on and make history? Both their Irish supporters and those who head to Anfield on a weekly basis will certainly be hoping that they can.

Energumene is the main draw at Cork Racecourse, Mallow, on Sunday, as the six-time Grade 1 winner returns to action.

The Willie Mullins-trained inmate will contest the day’s featured €100,000 Bar One Racing Hilly Way Chase.

This will be Energumene’s first race for 593-days, not having been seen since his win in the Grade 1 William Hill Champion Chase at the Punchestown Festival in 2023.

The French-bred son of Denham Road bids to claim a third victory in the Grade 2 Bar One Racing Hilly Way Chase, following previous triumphs in the race in 2021 and 2022.

This year’s renewal of the race will boast the largest field since 2018, with eight runners set to participate, with six of them coming from Mullins’ powerful Closutton stable.

Mullins hoping to extend record

Energumene will be reunited with Cork jockey Paul Townend as he aims to extend Mullins’ incredible record in the race, having trained the winner of the Hilly Way Chase every year since 2007, with the exception of 2012 and 2018.

Among the other Mullins representatives will be Hunters Yarn and four other Grade 1 winners Dinoblue, Ferny Hollow, Appreciate It, and Blue Lord.

Patrick Mullins, Ireland’s champion amateur jockey, will ride Ferny Hollow; Mark Walsh will be aboard Dinoblue; Danny Mullins will partner Appreciate It, and Brian Hayes will take the mount on Hunters Yarn.

Despite his historic dominance in the race, and the strength of his participants for this season’s contest, Team Mullins will face a strong challenge from both the Joseph O’Brien and John Queally yards.

O’Brien’s Carriganóg team will be represented by Grade 1 William Hill Champion Chase winner at last season’s Punchestown Festival, Banbridge.

Queally will have the recent Cork winner The Banger Doyle in the field.

Con O’Keeffe aims for another Mares’ Novice Chase win

The Grade 2 Coolmore NH Sires Order Of St George Irish EBF Mares Novice Chase at Cork Racecourse on Sunday has attracted a field of eight runners.

Last season’s successful handler with Silent Approach at 33/1, Con O’Keeffe, will be represented this time around by Kilbarry Saint.

Zenta, third in the race last year, will again contest the Grade 2 event, and will be joined by sable companion Karia Des Blaises.

The 2023 winning rider Danny Mullins will partner A Law Of Her Own from the Peter Fahey yard, while Henry de Bromhead will be represented by Nara.

This race has been won by mares of the calibre of Shattered Love (2017) and Vroom Vroom Mag (2014) in the past.

Six runners contest Grade 3 Stayers Novice Hurdle

The Grade 3 Singletons Supervalu Stayers Novice Hurdle, which has been won by eight different trainers in the past eight years, will have six runners on Sunday.

Ther Gordon Elliott-trained Minella Sixo may be the headline act, but Willie Mullins will be double-handed with Luckinthecity and Just For Love.

Cork-based trainers make up the remainder of the field: Jonathan Sweeney’s Churchroad Prince; recent 40/1 winner Therellbguddaysyet from Michael O’Connor’s stable, and Kilworth’s Desmond Kenneally has Pray Tell in the line-up.

The opening race of the seven-race card gets underway at Cork Racecourse, Mallow, at  12.03pm with the Bar One Racing 3YO Maiden Hurdle.

Racing will conclude at 3.25pm with the 24-runner Greenvalley Transport Novice Handicap Hurdle.

Energumene Headlines Star-Studded Field for €100,000 Bar One Racing Hilly Way Chase at Cork This Sunday

The anticipation is mounting for the €100,000 Bar One Racing Hilly Way Chase at Cork Racecourse this Sunday, December 8th. Leading the line-up is the iconic Energumene, a two-time winner of this Grade 2 contest, which features a stellar field of twelve elite two-mile chasers.

Returning after a 593-day break, the Willie Mullins-trained Energumene is set to dazzle fans once again. The 10-year-old champion has already claimed back-to-back Hilly Way Chase victories in 2021 and 2022, followed by his triumph in the Champion Chase

at Cheltenham. Energumene’s highly anticipated seasonal debut is poised to bring a wave of excitement to Cork, making the €100,000 Grade 2 contest a must-watch event for National Hunt fans.

Willie Mullins dominates the entries with six contenders, including Appreciate It, Blue Lord, Ferny Hollow, Dinoblue, and Hunters Yard. This incredible depth showcases Mullins’ unparalleled mastery in the two-mile chase division. Energumene, however, remains the standout, with hopes high for a victorious return.

Joseph O’Brien adds further intrigue to the race with Banbridge, the William Hill Champion Chase winner from Punchestown, and Solness, who recently outperformed Banbridge in the Bar One Racing Fortria Chase at Navan. Their inclusion guarantees a highly competitive renewal.

Gordon Elliott’s Fil Dor, runner-up in last year’s Hilly Way Chase, and Riviere D’etel join the fray, alongside Henry de Bromhead’s Quilixios, who defeated Marine Nationale on his seasonal debut. John Queally’s The Banger Doyle, a local favorite after a major win in October, rounds out the star-studded field.

•Grade 2 Coolmore NH Sires Order Of St George Irish EBF Mares Novice Chase: A race that has produced top mares like Vroum Vroum Mag and Impervious. This year’s standout entries include Iris Emery and Shecouldbeanything, with an upset possible from Kilbarry Saint.

•Grade 3 Singletons Supervalu Stayers Novice Hurdle: Willie Mullins’ Luckinthecity faces stiff competition from Gordon Elliott’s Minella Sixo and The Yellow Clay, ensuring another thrilling battle.

The Grade 3 Bar One Racing Troytown Handicap Chase was won by Stuzzikini and Gavin Brouder on day two of the Bar One Racing Navan Racing Festival.

Trained by Gordon Elliott – the middle part of a treble – the 20/1 chance had two and half lengths in hand on Lucid Dreams from the John Ryan yard.

The runner-up, ridden by Danny Mullins, started at 22/1, while Yeah Man (16/1) and Perceval Legallois (10/1) finished third and fourth respectively.

The Grade 3 John Lynch Carpets Monksfield Novice Hurdle also went to the Gordon Elliott team through The Yellow Clay.

The 8/11 favourite, with Jack Kennedy in the saddle, came home a comfortable 10 length winner in the colours of Bective Stud.

Where’s My Jet (4/1) took the runner-up spot, ahead of Fleur In The Park (9/2) and Prends Garde A Toi in the two and a half mile contest.

Better Days Ahead (2/1) overturned the 1/2 favourite Slade Steel in the Race And Stay Irish EBF Beginners Chase.

In the ownership of Bective Stud, Jack Kennedy had four lengths of an advantage over the Henry de Bromhead-trained favourite at the winning post.

Big win for Ray Beckett

Tipperary handler Ray Beckett tasted success in the €45,000 Bar One Racing Tara Handicap Hurdle with 28/1 chance Sequoiaspirit, in the hands of jockey Liam Quinlan.

The opening Bar One Racing Boost 3-Y-O Maiden Hurdle was won by race favourite Total Look at 11/4.

Trained by Gavin Cromwell and ridden by Keith Donoghue, the French-bred son of Cloth Of Stars held off Beyond Your Dreams (18/5) by half a length.

Cast A Spell (12/1) lost her maiden tag in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF (Mares) Maiden Hurdle over two miles.

Ridden by Cian Quirke for handler Tom Hogan, the six-year-old daughter of Mastercraftsman crossed the finishing line two lengths ahead of the odds-on favourite Qualimita (30/100) in the 21-runner race.

Another de Bronhead/O’Keeffe winner

The good form of Henry de Bromhead and Darragh O’Keeffe continued as Love Me (14/1) became the Waterford trainer’s ninth winner in 14 days when taking the Gaeil Colmcille GAA Kells Handicap Hurdle.

The concluding race of the successful two-day festival went to the Emmet Mullins-handled John Gleeson-ridden Churchfield Sunset at 7/1.

Local trainer Gordon Elliott dominated proceedings on day one of the Navan Racing Festival, winning five races on the eight-race card.

With five winners for Elliott, his stable jockey Jack Kennedy rode three winners and top owners Bective Stud and Gigginstown House Stud both had two winners each.

Wingmen wins on hurdling debut

Dual bumper winner last season Wingmen (8/15 favourite) opened proceedings, taking the Kilderry Pub & Kitchen Maiden Hurdle for Noel and Valerie Moran of Bective Stud, and jockey Jack Kennedy.

The Fairyhouse bumper winner last month Blue De Vaissy (4/6 favourite) easily won the first graded race of the afternoon, the Grade 3 Bar One Racing For Auction Novice Hurdle over two miles, in the colours of Gigginstown House Stud, again in the hands of Kerry rider Jack Kennedy.

Found A Fifty claims Fortria Chase

The Grade 2 Bar One Racing Fortria Chase then fell to Elliott’s team, as Found A Fifty (11/8 favourite) gave Kennedy a treble and owners Bective Stud their double.

Down Memory Lane (7/1), third to Caldwell Potter in a Grade 1 novice hurdle at Leopardstown last Christmas, made a successful debut over the larger obstacles when winning the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Beginners Chase for the Cullentra House team, jockey Mark Walsh and owner J.P. McManus.

The five-timer was completed for Elliott in the Bar One Racing ‘Guaranteed Overnight Prices’ bumper when Harry Swan pushed the Gigginstown House Stud-owned favourite Whinney Hill (6/4 favourite) out to claim a three and a half length success.

Home By The Lee wins his second Lismullen

The Grade 2 Railway Bar Lismullen Hurdle over two and a half miles was won by Home By The Lee (7/1).

The 2022 winner of the race, and third-place finisher last year, is trained by Joseph O’Brien for Seán O’Driscoll and the nine-year-old was ridden by Danny Mullins.

Cork jockey Michael O’Sullivan gave Slane Hill (9/1) an enterprising ride in the Lisadell Equine Hospital Handicap Hurdle. Hitting the front early doors, the seven-year-old came home in splendid isolation for trainer and owner Barry Connell.

County Waterford trainer John Flavin was also among the winners with Clarens (9/1) a battling winner of the Hotel Park St. Johann in Tirol Austria Handicap Hurdle, under Alex Harvey.

Day two of the Navan Racing Festival gets underway at 11.35am on Sunday.

Aidan O’Brien won his seventh British Flat Trainer’s Championship, his first since 2017.

Though the British season officially runs from January 1 to December 31, the Ballydoyle trainer leads the standings by more than £3 million after a string of big-race successes.

Breeders’ Cup Classic contender City Of Troy has spearheaded O’Brien’s efforts in Britain this year, winning a Group 1 hat-trick in the Betfred Derby, Coral-Eclipse and Juddmonte International at York most recently.

Kyprios returned to the top of the staying division with victories in the Gold Cup and Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup, while Jan Brueghel led home a one-two for the stable in the Betfred St Leger at Doncaster.

As usual, Aidan O’Brien was quick to deflect praise as he emphasised the importance of the team effort at Ballydoyle and Coolmore.

“It is a big team effort from everyone in Ballydoyle and Coolmore,” O’Brien said. “There are so many special people in so many different areas that if I started talking about them, I would be here until tomorrow. You can have the horses and the place but, if you don’t have the people, it won’t happen.

“The owners are the people who put the resources in every year, to try and help us make it better. They put a lot of time in and give us advice. We do our best, give information back, and try to follow the roadmap that they draw for us. Some years it goes very well, some years it is ordinary, and some years it is medium.

“This was a good year for us. We won plenty of good races. I am just delighted for everybody when we do have a good year. We don’t take anything for granted and try to look to the future.”
