Defending Energia Men’s All-Ireland League champions Cork Constitution ended their three-match losing run with a 32-13 bonus-point win over Dublin University in Round 4.

A week on from his first senior start at out-half for Munster, Jack Crowley was back in club colours in the All-Ireland League – playing at full-back – and he was at the heart of Con’s strong start at Temple Hill.

He touched down out wide in the 14th minute after being set up by a roaming Sean French, who had caught a clever Duncan Williams kick. Greg Higgins, French and former captain Niall Kenneally also touched down for Brian Hickey’s men.

Ulster Academy forward Harry Sheridan strode over late on for Trinity’s lone try, while Leinster’s Jack Dunne and Rob Russell got some more game-time for the students.

Conor Hayes continues to light up Division 1A this season, scoring a hat-trick of tries as Young Munster overcame Lansdowne 24-20 on the Aviva Stadium’s main pitch.

Hayes, the strongly-built former Connacht Eagles winger, finished Saturday’s epic encounter with 17 points, including a crucial 63rd-minute try which saw him combine out wide with Patrick Campbell.

Lansdowne fought back from 17-3 down to lead 20-17 – Leinster pair Peter Dooley and Cormac Foley both crossed the whitewash – but the Cookies prevailed to make it four wins on the trot.

Replacement Jack Milligan’s late penalty earned Ballynahinch a losing bonus point against Garryowen, who triumphed 27-22 to stay top of the table. Hooker Pat O’Toole (2) and Munster flanker Jack Daly claimed the tries for the Light Blues.

Clontarf hooker Dylan Donnellan grabbed a hat-trick of tries in their 29-14 comeback victory at Terenure College. Converted scores from Alan Bennie and Colm de Buitléar had ‘Nure in front, but ‘Tarf finished strongly with replacement Adrian D’Arcy registering their bonus point.

Despite UCC winger Matthew Bowen’s brilliant hat-trick, which included a 90-metre intercept effort, UCD opened their win account at Belfield where Munster’s Paddy Patterson (2) and Leinster Academy flanker Sean O’Brien both touched down in a 40-31 bonus point success.

Highfield and Old Wesley continue to lead the way in Division 1B, with Shane O’Riordan’s 78th-minute penalty guiding the Corkmen to a tense 20-17 victory at Malone.

Winger Tommy O’Callaghan touched down twice as Old Wesley won 36-20 at Naas, while St. Mary’s College, who had a hat-trick from classy centre Myles Carey, ended City of Armagh’s winning start with a superb 35-13 bonus point triumph.

Munster’s Jake Flannery shone at out-half in Shannon’s 32-10 dismissal of Old Belvedere. He scored two tries and kicked 12 points.

Full-back Paddy Fox’s brace of tries propelled Navan past Banbridge on a 30-20 scoreline, as the sides swapped places at the bottom of the table.

Round three of the Energia Men’s All-Ireland League saw four teams continue their winning starts to the season in Division 1A.
Ace out-half Evan Cusack stole the show at Tom Clifford Park as he guided Young Munster to a 19-7 Energia All-Ireland League win over Terenure College.

Cusack kicked 14 points to take his early-season haul to 37 after three rounds, in a game that tight until the very end.

With a strong wind behind him, one of his first-half kicks flew over from inside the Cookies’ half.

Terenure’s Peter Sylvester took a great line onto a pass to score, closing the gap to 12-7, but in-form Munsters winger Conor Hayes slipped out of a tackle and reached in under the posts for his third try in as many games.

Garryowen still sit top of the Division 1A table after surging to their third straight bonus-point victory. They ran out 26-13 winners over UCD with two tries each from Bryan Fitzgerald and Sean Rennison.

Cork Constitution’s title defence took another hit at Castle Avenue where Clontarf scored three second-half tries in a deserved 31-24 triumph.

Back-to-back efforts from Conor Kearns and Leinster Academy flanker Martin Moloney sealed it for ‘Tarf, but Con fought back for a losing bonus point, Sean French touching down and captain Aidan Moynihan taking his kicking haul to 14 points.

Winger Michael Silvester had a memorable debut for Lansdowne, scoring two second-half tries in their 31-15 bonus point success against an Alex Kendellen-inspired UCC. 2021 Ireland U20’s captain Kendellen notched the students’ second try.

Leinster’s Liam Turner was a ball of energy in Dublin University’s 19-13 win over Ballynahinch. His provincial colleague Jack Dunne also got game-time off the bench, on his return from an ankle injury.

Meanwhile, Highfield remain a point clear at the top of Division 1B after hammering Naas 38-3. Big carries from Ryan Murphy and James Rochford set the tone, with the Corkmen recovering from losing out-half James Taylor to an early injury.

St. Mary’s College opened their win account, beating Banbridge 29-17 with captain Richie Halpin getting amongst the tries. A late penalty try gave City of Armagh a tense 23-20 home win over Shannon.

Old Wesley are also unbeaten after three rounds, centre David Poff’s third-minute try putting them on track for a 45-7 bonus point victory over Navan.

It was maximum points too for Old Belvedere, with Leinster Academy hooker John McKee touching down twice in a 32-10 defeat of Malone.

Fixtures have been confirmed for the upcoming 2021/22 Energia All-Ireland League (AIL) season.

The action will get underway with a full round of the Women’s All-Ireland League on Saturday, September 25th.

The men’s league will return a week later on October 2nd, with all 50 men’s sides starting their season that weekend.

The default kick-off times for men’s games will be 2:30 pm on Saturdays and 5 pm on Saturdays for women’s games but can be adjusted based on the agreed preference of participating teams.

Speaking about the release of fixtures, IRFU Competitions Manager Kevin Beggs said: “We are delighted to announce firm fixtures for all 60 participating teams in the Energia All-Ireland League for the 2021/22 season.

“For clubs and their supporters, it means a lot to have dates to put in the diary and the chance to get back pitchside and enjoy the very best that club rugby has to offer.”

The full list of fixtures is available to view on https://www.irishrugby.ie/energiaail.

Briggs said that the fixture list is balanced to meet the needs of clubs across the upcoming season.

The IRFU Competitions Manager also stated that clubs will play localised games in preparation for the league’s openers.

“It will be preceded by localised matches in September to whet the appetite for the All-Ireland action to come.”

Women’s All-Ireland League

Two new sides will join the women’s ranks for the 2021/22 season – Ballincollig and Wicklow – and both will have home advantage in Round One.

Ballincollig will welcome Suttonians to Tanner Park while Wicklow will play host to Old Belvedere.

Defending Champions Railway Union will meet 2019 runners up UL Bohemian on October 23rd, two and a half years after they met in the last Women’s AIL final.

A nine-game regular women’s season will conclude on December 11th with a one-off modified format beginning on January 15th 2022.

A Top 4 Round-Robin will lead into semi-finals and a final to determine the 2021/22 Energia Women’s All-Ireland League Champions.

The bottom six sides will also be put into a round-robin system separate from the top four and will compete for a one-off trophy following play-offs.

Dates for the Energia Women’s All-Ireland League playoffs are subject to confirmation to avoid any clashes with the as-yet-to-be announced fixtures for the 2022 Women’s Six Nations Championship Fixtures.

The ring-fencing of all 10 participating teams will be retained as planned for the next two seasons as the IRFU continue to support the development and long-term sustainability of participating teams.

The Energia Women’s All-Ireland Cup will also return this season with details to be announced in due course.

Men’s AIL

In the Men’s AIL, there will be an 18-game regular season that will run up until April 9th 2022 and a final set for Sunday, May 1st 2022.

This move was made after a majority of clubs voted to return to the previous format of the Men’s AIL.

Cork Constitution are the last winners of the Men’s Energia AIL and kick off the defence of their 2018/19 title away to Garryowen.

By the time we get to our Energia All-Ireland League finals in May 2022, it will have been three years since those prestigious trophies were last lifted. It’s building up to be a very special season indeed.”

Details for the Men’s and Women’s 2021/22 All-Ireland League (AIL) seasons have been announced, per Irish Rugby.

The Women’s All-Ireland League will start on the weekend of September 25th while the men’s league will kick off on the weekend of October 2nd.

The Women’s AIL will be expanded to 10 teams, as announced last year and there will be no relegation for the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons.

Ballincollig and Wicklow will be the new sides making their Women’s AIL debuts.

All teams will have a nine-game regular season.

The table will then be split into two – the top four will play a six-match, home and away round-robin followed by playoffs for the Women’s AIL title.

The other six teams will have a five-match round-robin, followed by playoffs for a separate trophy.

This split is only expected to occur in the 2021/22 season.

The Men’s AIL will retain the five divisions – 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B and 2C and will have an 18-game regular reason for all 50 clubs based on the majority of clubs’ preference.

Promotion and relegation in the divisions will be reinstated.

Relegation will switch to a ‘one up, one down’ format “where any match is impacted by COVID-19.”

The IRFU Rugby Committee has agreed on a series of parameters to manage the impact of COVID-19 throughout the season, which has been shared with clubs.

Chair of the IRFU Rugby Committee Greg Barrett said in the announcement that “this is a really positive step towards meaningful rugby in the 2021/22 season and all 60 participating teams have a firm date to work towards.”

“These formats will facilitate the recovery of our clubs as we continue to calculate the cost of the epidemic to our domestic game and the rugby pathway and we remain ready and willing to adapt and evolve to ensure the long-term sustainability of our clubs.”
