Dublin Look to Extend Strong Start to League Campaign

Dublin head to Armagh this weekend aiming for their third win of the Allianz Football League. Dessie Farrell’s men have impressed so far, bouncing back from a Round 2 loss to Donegal with wins over Kerry and Derry.

🔹 Key Performers for Dublin

• Seán Bugler led the scoring in last weekend’s victory over Derry, notching six points.

• Niall Scully struck the net in the 22nd minute, setting Dublin on course for a dominant win.

• Conor Tyrell & Lorcan O’Dell both found the net early in the second half to put the game beyond doubt.

• Con O’Callaghan chipped in with four points, while his brother Niall O’Callaghan put in a solid performance.

With new faces blending well with seasoned stars, Farrell will be eager for another strong showing against the defending All-Ireland champions.

Armagh Seeking Consistency After Mixed League Results

Reigning All-Ireland champions Armagh have had a frustrating league campaign so far. Kieran McGeeney’s side secured a commanding eight-point win over Tyrone but have struggled for consistency, with defeats to Galway and Donegal followed by a draw against Mayo last weekend.

🔸 Key Armagh Players to Watch

• Paddy Burns hit the net in the 15th minute against Mayo, giving Armagh a five-point lead at the time.

• Conor Turbitt, Rory Grugan & Ethan Rafferty have provided crucial scores throughout the league.

• Stefan Campbell was vital in halting Mayo’s comeback last weekend.

Armagh will be determined to use home advantage to kickstart their campaign and challenge Dublin for the points.

  • Starting team’s as soon as they are available
  • It’s an all-Ulster showdown as Monaghan takes on Armagh in the opening round of Division 1. Armagh comes into the game as the favourites, with odds at 4/6, while Monaghan is 13/8 and a draw is 15/2.

The match will take place in Castleblayney, a far cry from last year’s league opener in Croke Park, but no less important as both teams aim to maintain their Division One status. Monaghan has just barely held onto their spot in the top tier in the last two years, while Armagh will be looking to get off to a strong start following their impressive 2022 campaign.

The two teams met twice last season, with both fixtures ending in a draw. They also faced off in the 2021 Ulster semi-final, which Monaghan narrowly won. Armagh last defeated their rivals in the first round of the 2021 league, a crucial win in maintaining their topflight status.

In 2022, Monaghan brought Armagh back down to earth after the Orchard County’s strong start to the season, with a 1-7 to 0-10 in the National Football league R3. The teams also couldn’t be separated in the McKenna Cup semi-final, with Monaghan winning on penalties after the game ended 0-15 to 0-15. 25 players saw game time for Armagh, but it was Jemar Hall’s missed penalty that saw Monaghan progress to the final.

As the teams prepare to face off once again, memories of those past games will no doubt be fresh in the minds of players and fans alike. Both Monaghan and Armagh will be looking to put their best foot forward and come out on top in this highly-anticipated all-Ulster clash.

Monaghan will be looking to prove that they are more than just the underdogs, and that they have what it takes to compete with the best in the league. They will be drawing on their recent success against Armagh, and will be looking to use that as motivation to secure a win in this opening round match.

Armagh, on the other hand, will be eager to redeem themselves and show that they are the top team in the league. They will be looking to use the disappointment of their past losses to Monaghan as fuel to come out strong and secure a victory in this opening round match.

The stage is set for an exciting and closely-fought match as Monaghan takes on Armagh in the opening round of Division 1. Both teams will be giving it their all in an effort to come out on top and start the season off on the right foot.

CLICK FOR LIVE SCORES ON ARMAGH V MONAGHAN

Armagh will face-off against Monaghan at Pairc Esler in County Down this coming Saturday at 4.00 pm in the Ulster Senior Football Championship semi-final.

Both sides are coming into this game with impressive and hard-fought wins in the quarter-finals. Armagh dispatched off Antrim with a score of 4-15 to 0-14. While Monaghan saw off Fermanagh with a final scoreline of 1-21 to 0-14 at Clones.

During their league campaign, Armagh was erratic. Inconsistent in their results in Division One, they won, drew, and lost one game each against three of their Ulster rivals in Donegal, Tyrone, and Monaghan.

Finishing above Monaghan by a single point in third place. Securing their Division 1 status with a comfortable 1-17 to 0-11 win over Roscommon in the relegation semi-final in June.

Their last encounter was back in May in Brewster Park of round one of both team’s league run. Armagh came out the victors in a close meeting by a score of 1-12 to 1-16. When betting online @ bet365 you can get even money on a Monaghan win.

Beaten comprehensively in last year’s Ulster semi-finalists against Donegal, they will hope to do one better and book their place in their first Ulster final since 2008.

Overall, they are not the team they once were. Looking hot and cold in their victory against Antrim, they would then face Monaghan.

Monaghan on the other hand is often seen as the dark horse when championship season comes around. Often disappointing when it comes to the crunch games.

Against Fermanagh in their last outing, they kept the Erne County’s scores from play at a minimum. With Sean Quigley’s free’s their main output with 0-7 points.

Their league campaign was awful, only surviving relegation by defeating Connacht finalists Galway, they will jump at the opportunity to redeem themselves.

    Strengths and Weaknesses

Monaghan’s main scoring threat is still Conor McManus, the 34-year-old Clontibret O’Neills man driven his side to Ulster glory on two separate occasions and will hope to do so for the third time this year.

However, he can only do so much and with Monaghan having little variety in their threat going forward, an injury or an off day for the three-time All-Star could boast disaster for the Oriel County.

During their clash with Antrim, Armagh did not look like a side that could turn over teams to the extent which one would assume. Scoring 4 goals is impressive but the scoreline was not a true reflection of the game.

Looking shaky when pressed by Antrim, they looked vulnerable at times which may be a point of concern for Kieran McGeeney heading into this game.

    Conclusion

If both teams play to the best of their ability, then it is a flip of a coin as to who will face either Tyrone or Donegal in the Ulster Final.

It is hard to look past Monaghan however, player for player they are superior.

Another advantage Seamus McEnaney’s side has is experienced in the past few years. Winning two Ulster titles in 2013 and 2015.

    Prediction: Monaghan by 6 points

After eliminating Tyrone in a tough Championship opener, Donegal return to action against Armagh. The Orchard county overcame Derry in a 70-minute duel in their opening game. The winner of this one advances to the final against Cavan or Down.

The Ulster Championship is undoubtedly the most competitive of the four pronvincials. So, when Donegal were drawn against Tyrone for their opener, the rest of Ulster would have rejoiced in being guaranteed to lose a big team straight away. Of course, Donegal were the ones to advance but they still have work to do to be crowned Ulster Champions.

Meanwhile, Armagh have struggled to play to their potential in recent Championships. Having won promotion to Division 1, they’re under pressure to compete with the biggest teams. So, this fixture will be a good test of their credentials.

Donegal were impressive against Tyrone. In particular, Ciarán Thompson and Michael Langan were standout performers. The latter was the Donegal goalscorer. On 25 minutes, he made a direct run forward, getting the ball from Peadar Morgan and holding off challenges before rifling the ball past Niall Morgan in the Tyrone goal.

Donegal only had 5 scorers in the game, Langan notching 1-12 of their total. Absentees from the scoresheet included Michael Murphy, Ryan McHugh, Niall O’Donnell, and Paddy McBrearty who was kept in reserve. If Donegal can add these names to their list of scorers, it will take a mammoth challenge to beat them.

Meanwhile, Armagh led for the entirety of their game against Derry but had to dig deep to see off the oakleafers.

Rian O’Neill kicked four frees that went a long way in Armagh’s favour. But, they allowed Derry to kick seven dead balls that helped them get back in the game. Kieran McGeeney will be sure to make sure his side tidy up their discipline as such fouling could cost them this game.

Leading 0-11 to 0-5 at the interval, McGeeney’s men allowed Derry back into the game in the second half. Jamie Clarke’s black card in the 51st minute only added to their self-inflicted struggles. Despite Derry coming back to make the game a closely contested one, Armagh held on. But, they will know that Donegal would put the game beyond them if they take their foot off the gas in such a way again.

Armagh haven’t won an Ulster title since 2008. With the absence of a back door this year they have to set their sights on ending that drought. Meanwhile, Donegal are going for their third Ulster final in a row. With Monaghan losing on the other side of the draw, Declan Bonner knows it is his to lose now.

Donegal are 2/7 favourites to advance. Otherwise, Paddy Power have Armagh at 7/2 to cause an upset while a draw is 9/1.

The game is live on Sky Sports Mix.

Prediction: Donegal. Armagh are a good side but even if they show up on Saturday Donegal will find a way to win. The north-westerners are just further along in their development than the Orchard men.

This will be their 28thth championship clash, with Armagh winning fifteen to Donegal’s nine  and three draws from the previous 27 contests. Both have one win behind them in the Ul ster championship: Donegal beat Tyrone by two points while Armagh had the same amount  to spare over Derry in their quarter-final.

    Team News

Armagh (Ulster SFC v Donegal): Blaine Hughes; Paddy Burns, Ryan Kennedy, James Morgan; Conor O’Neill, Aidan Forker, Mark Shields; Oisin O’Neill, Stephen Sheridan; Rory Grugan, Callum Cumiskey, Stefan Campbell; Jamie Clarke, Rian O’Neill, Niall Grimley.

    LAST FIVE CHAMPIONSHIP CLASHES

    2006: Armagh 1-9 Donegal 0-9 (Ulster final)

    Facts to know

This will be their first championship meeting since 2015 when Donegal won an Ulster quar ter-final by nine points.

Donegal are bidding to reach the final for the ninth time in ten seasons. The only year they missed out was 2017.

Armagh were last in the final in 2008.

The Ulster Championship will be more competitive than ever this year given the straight knock-out format of the Championship. Derry vs Armagh is the second quarter-final on Sunday. The winner of this tie will meet the winner of Donegal vs Tyrone a fortnite after.

Armagh had the more successful league campaign out of these two teams. They earned promotion to Division 1 for the first time since 2012 by beating Clare last weekend.

Oisin O’Neill said that promotion was a huge goal for the team.

“We never talked about the Championship and even since we came back, we haven’t spoken about Derry once. These two games (against Roscommon and Clare) are all that we were focused on and we didn’t get the job done last week but we did this week.”

The win gives Armagh some much-needed momentum going into the most competitive of all the Provincial Championships. They would have perhaps learned more from the defeat to Roscommon than from the win against Clare. Either way, Kieran McGeeney will be delighted to have two games under the belt before heading into this one.

    Oakleaves starting to Blossom?

Meanwhile, Derry made an impressive return to action and did all in their power to threaten the promotion places in Division 3. However, they just missed out thanks to their head-to-head record with Down. Firstly, a win at home to Longford marked a successful return to action. Secondly, Derry showed they weren’t just heading into the Championship to take part with a two-point on the road to Offaly.

Rory Gallagher has acknowledged that the lockdown was perhaps beneficial to his squad as it allowed injuries to heal. As a result, Gallagher will have a full squad at his disposal for the Armagh game with the sole exception of Karl McCaigue. Thankfully, the return of Conor Glass from the AFL has significantly strengthened the spine of the Derry team.

After last year’s disappointing Championship that ended in round 2 of the qualifiers, Derry are out to prove that they are able to challenge in Ulster. But, they haven’t been in a final since 2011 and are still on the upward curve.

In contrast, Armagh were unlucky to lose out in the Ulster semi-final replay to Cavan last year. A win over Monaghan was a big way to recover. But, Mayo eliminated them in the following round after a thrilling contest.

The home side are 15/8 outsiders and the Orchard county are 8/15 with Paddy Power. A draw is 15/2.

The game is live on BBC Northern Ireland.

    Prediction: Armagh.

Clare took a big step towards Division 2 safety with a win over Fermanagh last weekend. But, to ensure survival they need a result against Armagh. The Ulster side will be frustrated at their loss to Roscommon and will be looking to bounce back strongly. Clare vs Armagh takes place at 2pm on Saturday in Cusack Park.

Clare had two points to spare against Fermanagh in a 1-11 vs 1-9 victory that condemned the Ulster side to relegation.

Joe McGann’s superb individual goal was the difference at half-time. After the break, Clare extended their lead with a spread of scorers. Jamie Malone’s 0-3 came at a crucial time. With ten minutes to go, Fermanagh couldn’t reel in the five-point deficit.

Meanwhile, Armagh’s performance against Roscommon perhaps wasn’t deserving of a four point defeat. They gave away two penalties to let Roscommon back into a game in which Armagh were totally controlling.

A further goal for the Connacht side saw Armagh heads drop.

But, there was a lot of good to take from the performance. For example, Armagh were quite efficient in from of the posts.

Kieran McGeeney will still be confident of a promotion. Furthermore, if Cavan do them a favour, they could still go up as Division 2 winners.

    Team News

Both sides start their Championship on November 1. So far, neither has picked up any major injury concerns.

Clare play Tipperary who themselves are finding form at the right time. Clare could prioritise staying in Division 2 though. If they do, expect to see a full-strength team take the field against Armagh.

Similarly, getting promoted is no small deal for Armagh. Therefore, McGeeney won’t shy away from letting his big guns loose again. The O’Neill brothers were especially impressive against Roscommon and could be deployed again.

They play Derry in their Ulster Championship opener.

Armagh ( Clare): Blaine Hughes; Patrick Burns, Ryan Kennedy, James Morgan; Conor O’Neill, Callum Cumiskey, Aidan Forker; Niall Grimley, Oisin O’Neill; Rory Grugan, Stefan Campbell, Mark Shields; Jamie Clarke, Rian O’Neill, Conor Turbitt.

Clare (Armagh) Stephen Ryan, Gordon Kelly, Cillian Brennan, Eoghan Collins, Pearse Lillias, Aaron Fitzgerald, Alan Sweeney, Cathal O’Connor, Ciaran Russell, Emmet McMahon, Eoin Cleary, Jamie Malone, Kerman Sexton, Joe McGann, Cian O’Dea

Clare vs Armagh: Division 2, Saturday, October 24th, 2pm (Ennis).

It will be a fiery return to inter-county action in Division 2 with Armagh vs Roscommon. As it stands, Armagh are on top of the Division. But, their Connacht opponents have an equal record and are only second due to points difference.

Allianz Football Division 2 round 6
Armagh v Roscommon, Athletic Grounds, 5.30pm – RTÉ2  Preview and live score updates

Before the lockdown, Armagh were on a run of form. For example, their last outing saw them register a 3-14 to 0-10 win away to Fermanagh. Similarly, Roscommon ended on a good note with a home win against Westmeath. Both sides have a draw on their record in the League. Armagh’s came in a high-scoring thriller against Westmeath. On the other hand, Roscommon and Laois had 2-14 a piece in the opener in January.

In spite of being joint-leaders, a loss for either team here would make it tough to secure a top-two finish. There are three teams within two points of them. Furthermore, both sides have away fixtures in round 7. Roscommon travel to Cavan while Armagh go to Clare.

After coming down from Division 1 last year, Roscommon are an ambitious coming-of-age team who will hope to return to the top tier. Meanwhile, Armagh have been competitive in the Championship in the last couple of seasons. Therefore, a strong League campaign will be a sign of intent from the Orchard County.

It is Armagh who have the more hectic return to action. Specifically, their final League game comes just a week prior to their Championship opener away to Derry. If they hit the ground running they can carry their form into the Ulster Championship.

In contrast, Roscommon have an extra week to prepare for their Connacht semi-final at home to either Leitrim/Mayo. The reigning Connacht Champions are keen to retain their crown in a straight knock-out Championship.

Allianz National League Division 2: Armagh vs Roscommon, Saturday October 17, 5.30 pm (Athletic Grounds).

Armagh kept their promotion bid on track on track on Saturday with 0-16 to 0-10 win over Kildare at the Athletic Grounds. It was their blistering first half that paved the way to a comfortable 6 point win over Jack O’Connor’s charges.

A pitch inspection was required pre-game by match referee David Coldrick and he deemed the pitch playable. Armagh had the aid of the strong wind in the opening half. Aidan Nugent got the opening score of the game, but Paul Cribbin levelled up matters on 8 minutes. Mark Donnellan had to be at his best when making a super save from Nugent minutes later. Stefan Campbell knocked over the lead point, Niall Grimley extended the lead 0-03 to 0-01 after 22 minutes. Campbell’s second point had Armagh ahead by 5 on the half hour mark. Jamie Clarke then hit a brace of scores as Kieran McGeeney’s charges took a 0-08 to 0-01 advantage in at half time.

Rian O’Neill and Stephen Sheridan landed points immediately after the restart to stretch the lead. Armagh were then reduced to 14 players when Jamie Clarke was sent off on a second yellow card. However, it seemed to spur on Armagh as Rian O’Neill stretched the lead to 11 points. A Kildare revival of sorts then occurred with Paddy Brophy pointing, while Adam Tyrrell and Daniel Flynn also getting a few scores. Paul Cribbin and Brophy edged the Lilywhites closer, but in truth they never got close enough to Armagh on the scoreboard. Mark Shields and Rian O’Neill sealed the win for Armagh with late scores. Laois 0-16 Armagh 0-10

Laois beat Armagh 0-16 to 0-10 in Portlaoise. The win means Mike Quirke’s side now top Division 2 after an impressive 6 point win. Mark Barry top scored for the hosts with six points.

Armagh were heavy favourites coming into the game on the back of a massive win over Cavan on the opening weekend. However, the first half here was all Laois. Evan O’Carroll and Rian O’Neill swapped frees to open the scoring for each side. Laois though kicked the next two scores through Mark Barry and Michael Keogh as they led by 0-03 to 0-01. Niall Grimley cut the gap with a 20th minute point. Then came a Laois purple patch knocking over five scores in a row. Evan O’Carroll getting two, Brian Byrne, Kieran Lillis, Mark Timmons all pointing to give Laois a 0-08 to 0-02 lead the break.

Kieran McGeeney obviously wasn’t happy with his side and they came out playing much better football at the start of the second half. Mark Barry landed a free for the hosts but then came the Orchard’s purple patch. They kicked four in a row. Rian O’Neill landed three frees while Conor Tubritt scored from play. With 30 minutes left the gap was down to three. However, Mark Barry steadied the Laois ship. He knocked over a couple of frees, while O’Carroll registered two from play to Laois 0-13 to 0-08 ahead with 55 minutes played. Mark Barry and Jamie Clarke traded a couple of frees at the end but Laois weren’t going to be denied here as they went on to beat Armagh by 6 points.
