After what was nothing less than a dreadful season for Arsenal, they have spent big money in the transfer window to improve their luck

The Gunners have the highest net spend of any Premier League club this summer after Deadline Day.

Although the club has continued their bad form by losing their first three league games without scoring, Mikel Arteta will hope that some of these new players can turn their season around.

6. Nuno Tavares – €8 million

This was Arsenal’s first signing of the summer back in early July and it left most fans bewildered. The 21-year-old signed for a relatively small fee from Benfica and he has gone on to make two appearances in the league already.

Last season he only managed seven starts in the Portuguese league, providing no goal contributions. Arteta has clearly seen something he likes in the player but for now, he seems like more of a backup for Scotsman Kieren Tierney.

5. Ben White – €69 million

Arteta fiercely fought for the signing of White from Brighton & Hove Albion but after his first few games, it seems more like a panic buy. Arsenal have shown trouble at the back and going by his only game so far, the 23-year-old will not be the one to fix it.

It is clear that White has many years ahead of him and will probably play most of the remainder of Arsenal’s season but the main problem is the ludicrous price.

After a good season in the Championship and an alright one in the Premier League, Brighton managed to sell the player for twice what he is actually worth.

4. Aaron Ramsdale – €28 million

This was the transfer that Arteta hunted down the most in the transfer window. Ramsdale is still a young goalkeeper at the age of 23 but has already been a part of two relegated Premier League teams.

Although he was part of the Gunners win of the season – a thrashing of a West Brom reserve team in the EFL Cup – he does not seem worth his price tag.

Arsenal always had a decent keeper in Bernd Leno and it just seems that Ramsdale is costing more due to being English.

3. Albert Sambi Lokonga – €18 million

This signing has shown a slight bit of merit, Lokonga may have been in two of Arsenal’s opening losses but has shown to be a strong replacement for Granit Xhaka.

The 21-year-old started 27 times for Anderlecht last season and made five-goal contributions from a mainly defensive midfielder role.

The Belgian has also been praised by Premier League legend Vincent Kompany during his time in Anderlecht.

2. Takehiro Tomiyasu – €20 million

Here is another quality signing for a reasonable price. Tomiyasu signed from Italian midtable side Bologna on Deadline Day. He managed 31 starts for the club last year and three Olympic Games matches playing in every position in the backline.

What makes the deal sweeter is that they stole it from under the noses of their bitter rivals Tottenham at the last minute.

1. Martin Odegaard – €40 million

This is the biggest name / highest quality player that the Gunners managed to sign. Odegaard spent last season on loan at the club and Arteta loved every minute that the Norweigan spent on the field.

Signing from Real Madrid makes his price of €40 million more understandable. The main plus is that he has a lot of experience at the highest level for someone that is still only 22.

Only time will tell if any of these signings prove their worth and can pull Arsenal from the terrible rut they are in.

Last year was Arsenal’s worst season since before Arsene Wenger was their manager, failing to make it into Europe. Even with that major negative some small things have proven to be a beacon of light for the Gunners

Mikel Arteta relied heavily last season on Arsenal’s youth in his first full season in charge, mainly due to the incompetence of some of the more experienced players. Although the club finished ninth in the league last season, they have managed to hold onto their best players while still having pull in the transfer market.

Who are these young players?

Gunners fans will be happy to know that favourites Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith-Rowe and Gabriel Martinelli will remain at the club this season. They also got the signature of up-and-coming star Ben White from Brighton for an estimated £50 million.

With this new signing, Arsenal’s defence looks stronger and more youthful than it has been in years. The team could line out with Tierney, Gabriel, White and Bellerin in the defence with only one of those players over the age of 24.

Forward Martinelli may have struggled badly with injuries in his first two seasons in North London but is now fresh off an Olympic gold medal with Brazil.

Folarin Balugon and Smith-Rowe also had decent seasons for Arteta’s side with three goals and four assists between them in the Europa League.

After all of them, the youngster that stands above the rest is Bukayo Saka. The 19-year-old has shown his ability to play in defence, midfield and forwards for both club and country this year.

He played in four of England’s Euro 2020 matches on their run to the final. The Gunner’s only worry is that the young man’s confidence might be shot after he missed the fifth and final penalty that saw the Three Lions lose the final.

The ones left behind

With every good young player at the club, another one slips through the cracks. After what was an astonishing loan move to Newcastle, Joe Willock does not seem to be getting a warm welcome back at Arsenal.

The club is days away from agreeing on terms with the Magpies to sell the player to restock funds to buy James Maddison.

Another player seemingly left at the wayside is French defender William Saliba, the 20-year-old has been sent on another loan move to Ligue 1 with the club showing no intention of ever playing him.

The club still has some promising young prospects on their roster and will hope they bring glory back to the club this season. If Arteta shows more faith in the youth then maybe the team could make a stir in the top European places.

Their first challenge will be to overcome Brentford away from home at 16:00 on Friday 13th August.

Gareth Southgate has named Ben White as Trent Alexander-Arnold’s replacement in England’s European Championship team

The Brighton and Hove Albion defender impressed in his first season in the Premier league and will be part of England’s 26-man squad.

White was called in after Alexander-Arnold injured his hamstring in a friendly against Austria.

The 23-year-old has ben capped in two games for England after playing 90 minutes against Romania on Sunday.

Why was he picked?

White was given the nod over other players like James Ward-Prowse and Ben Godrey.

The young Englishman showed his ability this year to play in a three-man backline and as a defensive midfielder.

Brighton finished 16th in the league with White racking up good defensive numbers playing 36 games.

Fans speculate that White’s selection is a bad sign for Harry Maguire’s injury status.

Manchester United’s captain has not played any football since early May when he was injured after a game against Liverpool.

England’s squad

Southgate has sent home everyone not part of the 26-man squad in preparation of the tournament that starts next week.

White joins Conor Coady, Tyrone Mings, John Stones and Harry Maguire as the centre defensive options for England.

England will start their Euro 2020 against Croatia at 14:00 on Sunday 13th of June.
