To borrow Leo Cullen’s own phrase, Leinster were “getting a bit of flak” in the early weeks of the season. That criticism has since been well and truly silenced.

An outstanding run of form has seen the province reel off ten consecutive wins in all competitions, and they now have the opportunity to make it 11 straight when they host Edinburgh at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday, before attention turns to the Guinness Six Nations break.

The defence of their BKT URC title did not begin smoothly. Leinster managed just one win from their opening four league fixtures, struggling for momentum while a long list of frontline players was unavailable. Since then, however, Cullen’s side have surged back into contention, winning six URC matches on the bounce to climb to third in the table, while also completing a perfect four-from-four record in the Investec Champions Cup pool stage.

Reflecting on that turnaround, Cullen was quick to credit the resilience shown within the camp.

“I have to applaud our players and staff because they’ve worked incredibly hard over the last couple of months,” he said. “The group was getting a bit of flak at the start of the season, especially with the number of players missing, and we just took it on the chin.

“It’s a real credit to the characteristics these guys show every day.”

Leinster’s latest success came last weekend in Galway, where they claimed a 34–23 bonus-point win over Connacht in front of a record 12,461 crowd at the Dexcom Stadium, on a night that also marked the opening of the new Clan Stand.

“We knew it was going to be a huge occasion because it’s been in the calendar for a long time,” Cullen said. “We were heading into a hostile environment against a team that was going to be hugely motivated, so we expected a tough challenge.

“Connacht started the game a million miles an hour. They flew into everything on both sides of the ball, exactly as we thought they would. Credit to them, it was tit-for-tat throughout.

“It’s always satisfying to come away from a place like that with a bonus-point win.”

Focus now shifts to Saturday’s URC meeting with Edinburgh, who arrive in Dublin sitting 12th in the table after a home defeat to the Vodacom Bulls last time out.

Assistant coach Robin McBryde believes Leinster must ensure their recent work is capped off properly before the break.

“After a difficult start, we’ve just kept building week by week through what’s been a long block,” he said. “It’s been good, but now we’ve got to finish the job.

“Everyone is looking forward to the break after Saturday, so it’s one final push. There’s a different feel around the place this week with a lot of internationals away with their countries, which is always an honour.

“It brings a different energy and buzz, and everyone’s excited for the weekend.”

McBryde is expecting a response from the Scottish side following last weekend’s setback.

“They’ll be hurting after that result and keen to finish their own block on a high,” he added. “It’s always better going into a break with a win because the result stays with you.

“They’re a cohesive group, so it’ll be tough enough. We just need to improve on certain aspects from last Saturday and really re-knuckle down.”

Munster 17–15 Connacht: O’Donoghue Double Keeps Munster Unbeaten as Missed Kicks and Ralston Injury Haunt Connacht

URC Round 5 | Thomond Park | 25 October 2025

Munster finished the opening block of the BKT URC season unbeaten after edging Connacht 17–15 in a bruising interprovincial decided, yet again, by the narrowest of margins.

For the second straight week, Connacht’s goal-kicking proved their undoing. Three tries on the board but no conversions left them two points short — following last week’s one-point defeat after another missed kick.

Grit Over Glamour

It was not a night for highlight reels but rather for grit, patience, and sheer will. Captain Jack O’Donoghue embodied all three, powering over for two tries — including the match-winner — to secure Munster’s fifth straight victory and send them into the international break joint-top of the table with the Stormers.

Connacht’s Byron Ralston crossed twice while skipper Paul Boyle crashed over before half-time, yet without accuracy from the tee they could not translate effort into points.

First-Half Fireworks

Connacht started brightly, enjoying long spells of early possession and forcing Munster to defend for over twenty phases. The hosts survived that onslaught and counter-attacked decisively. When Josh Ioane failed to find touch, Munster countered through Shane Daly and Diarmuid Kilgallen before Dan Kelly burst the defensive line and put O’Donoghue away for the opening try.

Five minutes later, Ioane atoned for his error with a sublime offload to Ralston, who scored to level the contest. Connacht stayed on the front foot and soon added another, Ioane again central with a perfectly timed skip-pass that allowed Ralston to complete his brace.

Momentum then flipped in an instant. Reading Ioane’s next pass, Diarmuid Kilgallen intercepted and sprinted the length of Thomond Park to touch down under the posts on his return from injury. JJ Hanrahan added the extras for a 12–10 lead.

But Connacht finished the half stronger. A maul try awarded to Paul Boyle, confirmed by the TMO, nudged them ahead 15–12 at the interval — all three tries unconverted but enough to keep the visitors in front.

Second-Half Arm-Wrestle

The second half was defined by stoppages and collisions. Connacht lost Byron Ralston to what looked like a serious knee injury shortly after the restart — one of seven players withdrawn in a bruising encounter — while Munster dominated territory and possession (69% possession, 83% territory in the second half).

Still, the breakthrough refused to come until the 67th minute. After a series of short carries from the pack, replacement prop Ronan Foxe drove close and fed O’Donoghue, who powered over for his second try. Replacement Tony Butler narrowly missed the conversion, leaving Munster 17–15 ahead.

Connacht pressed late on but handling errors and Munster’s suffocating defence — led by Gavin Coombes (20 carries, 18 tackles) and Jean Kleyn (13 tackles) — ensured the home side closed out yet another nail-biter.

Aftermath

Munster remain joint-top of the URC on 23 points, unbeaten across their first five games. Connacht, now 12th, are left frustrated after consecutive narrow losses decided by missed kicks.

They will hope for reinforcements when the league resumes. Byron Ralston’s knee injury looked serious and could sideline him for several weeks, but Connacht are expected to welcome new signing Sam Gilbert from the Highlanders by the time they face the Sharks at home on 29 November. Gilbert, who can play full-back or centre, is also a proven goal-kicker and should take over kicking duties as Stuart Lancaster’s side look to steady their season.

Connacht Unchanged in the Backs as Wilkins Names Strong Squad for Ospreys Test

Connacht have named their matchday 23 for Saturday’s BKT United Rugby Championship clash away to the Ospreys (kick-off 5.15pm), with just three changes from the side that overcame Benetton three weeks ago.

There is continuity across the backline, as head coach Pete Wilkins sticks with the same seven backs for the second consecutive league fixture — a rare show of consistency in selection that reflects growing cohesion in the attacking unit.

Josh Ioane and Caolin Blade continue as the half-back pairing, with Cathal Forde and Hugh Gavin retained in midfield. Shayne Bolton and Finn Treacy remain on the wings, while Piers O’Conor lines out at full-back once again.

Up front, Denis Buckley returns to the starting XV and is joined in the front row by Dave Heffernan and Jack Aungier. Captain Joe Joyce comes back into the engine room alongside Darragh Murray, while Josh Murphy joins Shamus Hurley-Langton and Paul Boyle in a physical and mobile back row.

There’s also a clear intent to match Ospreys physically, with a 6:2 forwards-to-backs split named on the bench. Sean Jansen, typically a back row option, takes the number 23 jersey, highlighting the tactical focus for this crucial away fixture.

Away Form Must Improve

Connacht’s only away win in the league since April 2024 came against the Scarlets back in early October. Since then, results on the road have been inconsistent — a trend that must change if the province are to stay in touch with the playoff places.

With a massive fixture against Cardiff to follow next week — set to be played at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park in Castlebar — Wilkins and his staff will be eager to carry momentum into the home stretch of the season.

A defeat in Swansea could force selection changes for the Connacht leg of that double-header, while a victory would put Connacht slightly back in the mix for a top-eight finish.
