Donegal boxer Jason Quigley (19-1, 14 KOs) will fight for a world title for the first time in his career when he takes on unbeaten middleweight and WBO Champion Demetrius Andrade (30-0, 18 KOs) on Friday, November 19.

The American boxer will have the home advantage when he takes on the Irishman at SNHU Arena in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Quigley earned the title shot after racking up a three-fight win streak following his sole professional loss to Tureano Johnson two years ago.

He saw his 16-fight win streak come to an end that night in Fantasy Springs Casino but the boxer has bounced back to earn a world title shot.

The 30-year-old defeated Shane Mosley Jr via points in his most recent fight to win the  WBO NABO middleweight belt.

He boasts an impressive knockout rate of 74% but enters his first 12-round bout and faces his toughest opponent yet in the form of Demetrius Andrade.

Andrade will defend his title for the fifth time when he faces the Irish boxer, his most recent defence coming in the form of a unanimous decision victory over Liam Williams in April.

The 33-year-old American is hoping for the same result in his second fight of the year on Friday night.

His 18 knockouts at the professional level include a ninth-round TKO win over Dubliner Luke Keeler in January 2020.

Michael Conlan is set to fight Leigh Wood for the WBA World Featherweight title after promotion Matchroom Boxing won the purse bid.

Conlan is Wood’s mandatory challenger after his interim title win over TJ Doheny at Falls Park in Belfast last year.

His most recent victory saw him move to 16-0 in his professional career after his controversial exit at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.

The WBA had opened up purse bids for the fight on Monday morning with Matchroom and Top Rank seen as the favourites to land it.

Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn announced their bidding victory on Twitter that evening: “Delighted to win the purse bid for our Champ @itsLeighWood to defend his WBA World title against @mickconlan11 – official announcement coming soon.”

Leigh Wood, who is represented by Matchroom, won the WBA belt in July when he knocked Chinese boxer Can Xu down in the 12th round of their fight at Matchroom HG Garden.

The fight is set to be broadcast on DAZN due to their partnership with Matchroom Boxing and is expected to take place in 2022, possibly on St Patrick’s Day – Wood is currently recovering from an injury.

This bout will be the first World title bout that Conlan has fought at professional level – he has previously fought for and won the WBO inter-continetal featherweight and bantamweight belts as well as the featherweight division’s WBA interim belt, as previously mentioned.

Irish boxer Jason Quigley has earned himself a world title shot against WBO middleweight belt holder Demetrius Andrade, according to ESPN.

The fight will headline a championship triple-header on November 19 in New England, USA and will be shown live on DAZN.

Although sources of Mike Coppiner’s ESPN have confirmed that the card will be held in New England, there is no location for the bout confirmed.

Quigley is coming off the biggest win of his career – a points victory over Shane Mosley Jr for the vacant World Boxing Organisation NABO Middle Title.

The Irishman has won three fights since his loss to Tureano Johnson in the second half of 2019 – Quigley lost the NABF middleweight belt that he had since 2017.

The 30-year-old from Donegal also saw his 16-fight win streak come to an end that night in Fantasy Springs Casino but has bounced back from the first loss of his professional career.

He boasts an impressive knockout rate of 74% (14/19) but faces his toughest opponent yet in the form of Demetrius Andrade.

Andrade will defend his title for the fifth time when he faces the Donegal boxer, his most recent defence coming in the form of a unanimous decision victory over Liam Williams in April.

The 33-year-old American is unbeaten in his professional career and has 18 knockouts to his name.

One of those knockouts is a ninth-round TKO win over Dubliner Luke Keeler in January 2020.

The DAZN-streamed card also features title bouts at 122 pounds and 112 pounds and all three fights will see champions promoted by Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing take on Oscar de la Hoya’s Golden Boy Productions challengers.

Murodjon Akhmadaliev will defend his unified 122-pound championship against Ronny Rios in the co-feature, sources said, while Julio Cesar Martinez will put his 112-pound title on the line vs. McWilliams Arroyo in the opening bout.

Manny Pacquiao Announces his Retirement from Boxing

Eight-division world champion and all-time great Manny Pacquiao has announced retirement from boxing at the age of 42.

The now Philippines senator announced he will be hanging up the gloves for good on Wednesday from a social media post.

After posting a 14-minute goodbye video on his Facebook page, he went on to say;

“As I hang up my boxing gloves, I would like to thank the whole world, especially the Filipino people for supporting Manny Pacquiao. Goodbye boxing,”

“It is difficult for me to accept that my time as a boxer is over. Today I am announcing my retirement.”

The ”Pac-Man”has finished his glittering career with a massive record of 72 fights, 8 losses and 2 draws. Of those 62 victories, 39 were by knockout and 23 by decision.

He started his professional career on January 22nd, 1995 at the age of 16 and went on to win 12 world titles and is the only fighter in history to win a title in eight different classes.

His last fight was a losing effort against Cuban Yordenis Ugás from a Unanimous Decision in August of this year at the age of 42.

The loss was Pacquiao’s first fight in more than two years after his split decision victory over American Keith Thurman in 2019.

The Philippines fighter holds a strong resumé, facing off against the likes of Floyd Mayweather Jr., Shane Mosley, Miguel Cotto, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Antonio Margarito and his iconic four fights with Juan Manuel Márquez just to name a few.

His retirement has been a long time coming with numerous hints about his eagerness to step out of the ring and into the political landscape in his home country of the Philippines.

Earlier this month, Pacquiao was nominated by a faction of the ruling party, PDP-Laban, which he accepted and will now run for the presidency in the May 2022 elections.

Irish boxer Jono ‘King Kong’ Carroll (19-2-1, 5 KOs) is focused on the prospect of moving one step towards his ultimate goal of becoming World Champion with a win against Andy ‘El Tiburon’ Vences (23-2-1, 12 KOs) this Saturday night.

Jono Carroll and Andy Vences will fight on Triller Fight Club’s Legends II card on September 11, which also includes fights between Tito Ortiz and Anderson Silva, and David Haye and Joe Fournier, as well as the main event – Evander Holyfield vs Vitor Belfort.

The fight is scheduled for 10 rounds and will be for the vacant WBA International Silver Super-Featherweight Title.

The 29-year-old from Dublin is not phased by the quality of his opponent and believes he can impose his own game plan on the American.

“I want to be a World Champion,” Carroll exclaimed. “The only reason I’m in this game is to be a World Champion.

“Every fight for me now is for a world title, so I don’t really necessarily care about my opponent.

“It doesn’t bother me how good or bad or whatever he is – I always try and focus on my game plan and if I’m in the correct mindset and I’m in the correct physical condition that I should be, then I don’t believe anyone beats me.”

Both fighters competing on Saturday have lost in recent history, with both of them having lost in title fights prior to their most recent loss too.

For El Tiburon, the most recent loss was his most recent fight against Luis Alberto Lopez Vargas and the 30-year-old want to bounce back from it and avoid three losses in four bouts.

In Jono’s case, he has already bounced back from his loss and is happy for Maxi Hughes, who beat him last August and is now IBO World Lightweight Champion after victory on Saturday night.

“I caught a silly loss but it doesn’t define my career. When its all said and done and I’m the World Champion, that’s all that matters to me at the end of the day.”

King Kong got back on track following the defeat to Hughes with a victory over Romic Airapetean, who had to retire halfway through their fight.

Carroll then had a fight with Vences scheduled for June before it was postponed several times.

Regardless of the postponements, the former IBF World Super Featherweight title challenger is feeling in great shape ahead of his fight later this week.

His team and himself set up their fight camp in Monterrey, Mexico – a familiar place for them. He likened its weather and humidity to that of Los Angeles.

He described the gyms in the city as old school and said that it reminded him of when he started out at Dunboyne initially and then Navan Boxing Club, getting into boxing via his dad.

He fondly remembered his first sparring session upon getting into boxing.

“I actually sparred a girl called Kellie Harrington, who just won the Olympics. She burst me nose…me and her were starting out together, you know.”

Jono sees the hustle of people on the Mexican city’s streets when he travels to the gym and noted that young girls would sell him chewing gum in exchange for cash in the middle of traffic.

He described people who weren’t on the streets that were doing incredible stunts that you would only otherwise see in a circus.

“These people are just hustling – they’re out here working hard, you know what I mean?

“It’s a mad culture shock but at the same time its nice to see hard working-class people trying to get out [of the situations they are in].”

Carroll added that he believes that that same drive he sees on his commute to the gym is visible in it.

He saw how hungry the local fighters are as they are fighting to try and give themselves and their families a better life.

The 29-year-old worked with three local sparring partners and credited them wth the toughness he sees in Mexicans across the sport.

“The fact that three Mexicans have to give me the work? You know, I’m in shape, I’m ready.”

Jono Carroll fights Andy Vences for the WBA International Silver Super-Featherweight Title on Saturday, September 11 at 8:15 pm Irish Standard Time. The bout will be available to watch on FITE TV.

Katie Taylor retained her lightweight belts and continues her journey as an undisputed and undefeated professional boxing champion with a victory over mandatory challenger Jennifer Han in Leeds on Saturday night.

The Irish boxer successfully defended her lightweight crown, winning all ten rounds on all judges scorecards (100-89 x3) in the co-main event of Lara v Warrington 2.

The fight was not the most entertaining but the result improves the resumé of the 35-year-old Taylor, who was fighting in the birthplace of her father.

Taylor started off on the front foot acting as the aggressor from the opening bell, using her jab well and reading Han’s moves.

Han began finding success with her punches in the second round and the back-and-forth theme continued over the next few rounds.

The former IBF Featherweight champion did not look rusty after 19 months without a fight but Taylor was one step ahead for much of the fight.

Both fighters traded periods of dominance in each round from 2-5 but the champion took all rounds on the scorecards – Han was at her most aggressive in these rounds and spent extended periods on the front foot.

Han’s defence was strong initially but the American started to fight looser and Taylor punished her for it and imposed her dominance with confidence from round five onwards.

As Taylor started to dominate proceedings, her 38-year-old opponent began to tire, in contrast to Taylor, who looked comfortable throughout.

The fight regressed into a one-sided climax as the final five rounds grew more one-sided with each bell.

Taylor searched for the stoppage but could not get it as her Texan opponent survived the ten rounds to take the loss on the scorecards.

In the main event, Josh Warrington’s fight against Mauricio Lara was declared a technical draw after two rounds.

An accidental headbutt from the Brit opened a cut above Lara’s eye and the ringside doctor deemed the Mexican unfit to continue.

Team Ireland boxer Aidan Walsh is back home but has not got over the feeling of becoming an Olympic bronze medallist.

Walsh defeated Mauritian Merven Clair to progress to the semi-finals of the Men’s Welterweight boxing tournament at the Olympic games.

Four judges had him down as the winner, securing a medal for him, but the Monkstown boxer had to withdraw from his semi-final bout after injuring himself while celebrating.

The Team Ireland member was due to fight Team GB’s Pat McCormack, who ended up taking home the silver medal in the division.

However, the 24-year-old is over the moon with his bronze medal and said: “To be honest, it still just all seems surreal.

“Usually I’m out in the crowd supporting other people, but to be standing on the side is crazy.

“I just feel lucky and extremely grateful. Everyone on the team deserves to be here as well with a medal.

“But first and foremost I’m an Olympian along with my sister alongside a great team. Everything else is a bonus.”

Walsh noted that he feels extremely lucky to be able to be in this position – a bronze medallist after his first Olympics.

The fighter is excited to get back to Monkstown and see the support group that helped him get to such a position.

The most important part of the Olympic journey for Walsh was sharing it with one person from that group – his sister Michaela Walsh, also an Olympian.

Michaela was a huge supporter of all the Team Ireland boxers after her exit from the Women’s Featherweight tournament at the round of 16.

“It’s great to have someone like that. Someone who [is my] best friend and [have] grown up together.”

Now, he looks forward to putting his feet up and not having to worry about such a strict diet.

His post-Olympics mindset follows the same pattern that Kellie Harrington’s does as the pair look to make the most of their time off.

Aidan will return to his caravan with his girlfriend and eat whatever he wants after spending so long focused on Tokyo – he added that sweets weren’t available to him in Japan.

“I’m going to go to the caravan with my girlfriend in Carnlough and just take it easy – have a bit of Chinese, a tin of Coke and lots of chocolates, lots of sweets and just pig out.”

Team Ireland boxer Kellie Harrington said that her gold medal win has not kicked in yet for her upon returning home on Tuesday following her victory at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Harrington defeated Brazil’s Beatriz Fereira by unanimous decision to earn Team Ireland’s second gold medal at Tokyo 2020 and conclude a fantastic run for the 2018 World Amateur Lightweight Champion.

The boxer has not been able to take in her achievement due to sleepless nights after her win and the increase in media attention compared to her World Championship victory.

“I think it will take for me to realize what’s actually going on, it will take me a couple of weeks, to not be around the team, to not be in that environment, to actually realize what has happened, and what I have achieved,” said the Olympic gold medallist.

A large amount of her family and friends greeted Kellie when she returned from New Delhi with gold in 2018 following her win over Olympic semi-final opponent Sudaporn Seesondee.

However, there was a smaller group waiting for her at the airport because of the restrictions in place and a large media presence wanting to hear from her as soon as she touched down.

The media have had a huge interest in Harrington since her victory and the fighter did not get back to her room in Tokyo until 9 pm JST on the day of the fight because of a press conference and an RTÉ interview.

“This is the first time speaking to me Ma and Da [since the win] because I haven’t been ringing people or anything like that because I’m just so exhausted.”

The only person she spoke to before returning home was her partner, Mandy Loughlin, via Bernard Dunne’s phone for only ten minutes.

Harrington hopes to relax for the coming weeks after being on a strict diet since she began preparing for the Olympics.

She is also thinking about getting a replica medal made as the original one already has a scratch on it.

However, Harrington did not seem too bothered about the scratch and the boxer is excited to watch some television, listen to the radio and eat whatever she wants over the coming days.

“I just want to sit down on me sofa, watch some telly, or not watch telly – listen to the radio…It’s gonna be brilliant to just eat whatever I want.”

Team Ireland boxer Kellie Harrington will box for gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games this coming Sunday as she put in a tough and gritty performance in her semi-final bout against Sudaporn Seesondee of Thailand this morning.

The lightweight took the win – and a minimum silver medal – on a 3-2 split decision.

They were neck-and-neck throughout, with Kellie taking a 3-2 edge in the opening two rounds, leaving a big closing round ahead.

Patience was key for Harrington though, and it paid off in the third, as she kept her composure against the tricky southpaw, to maintain her 3-2 lead and take the win.

Kellie has now secured a minimum of an Olympic silver medal for Team Ireland and will box for gold this coming Sunday in the Women’s Light (57-60kg) Olympic final.

“It’s fantastic,” she said afterwards. “Olympic silver medallist. That’s the stuff that people dream about.”

Harrington described the bout as a chess match and says her previous fight with Seesondee at the 2018 AIBA Amateur World Championships was like one too.

“It was patience that was key, I kept my patience and she didn’t. And that’s what won me the fight. The coaches were in the corner telling me, ‘stay patient’ and giving me tactics to throw and it worked.”

Reflecting on how it feels to be through to an Olympic final and have a silver medal secured she added that many have tried to get there, many don’t have what it takes to succeed because they don’t have the willpower, the determination, the focus, the dedication.

“I eat, sleep and breathe boxing. I’ve had heartbreak. I know what it is to fail and I know how hard it is to pick yourself back up after that. This is why I am who I am, and why I am here today – because I’m not afraid of failure. I know what it is. I’m Kellie Harrington. I’m myself and I make my own pathway.”

Kellie will face off against Beatriz Ferreira of Brazil in the Women’s Light Olympic final at 6 am Irish time on Sunday.

Team Ireland boxer Kellie Harrington will fight for an Olympic gold medal on Sunday at 6 am after her victory against Thai boxer Sudaporn Seesondee on Thursday morning.

After an assertive third round, the Dublin fighter won via split decision put her in pole position to reach the final.

The match-up was a rematch of the 2018 AIBA Amateur World Lightweight Championship final and the scorecards led to the same conclusion – 3-2 to Harrington.

The Dubliner is now guaranteed a silver medal after reaching the final of the division and could win the first Irish silver medal of Tokyo 2020 or the second Irish gold after Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy’s win.

The tense first round saw Harrington come out on top after her early jabs were deemed enough for a 3-2 round win.

However, her nimble opponent, Seesondee, fought back in the second round to even proceedings.

A reoccurring right hand was a constant in the Thai boxer’s gameplan as she got into the groove of things in round two.

Yet, Harrington’s power proved too much for her rival to handle and a tough third round showcased that.

In contrast to her opponent, the Portland Row native’s left hand was her main weapon, and it was used often in the final round as she regained control of the bout.

Harrington’s split decision win saw three judges edge her on their scorecards with a 29-28 score but it was enough for the Irish woman to reach the final.

Harrington becomes the first Irish boxer to reach the final of an Olympic boxing division since John Joe Nevin at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The 31-year-old will fight 41-year-old Brazilian Beatriz Fereira for the gold medal on Sunday morning.

Her five-nil unanimous decision win over Finnish pugilist Mira Potkonen alludes to a very enticing affair between the two finalists.

Team Ireland star Kellie Harrington’s gold medal bout will be shown live on RTÉ Two and will take place at 6 am on Sunday, August 8th.
