Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers has said that his side’s win over Brighton and Hove Albion in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup was a good experience for the academy players that made an appearance.

The Foxes won 4-2 on penalties after Graham Potter’s Seagulls had equalised twice in the game’s 90 minutes.

Harvey Barnes and Ademola Lookman had twice put Leicester ahead but Adam Webster and Enock Mwepu brought their side level.

Mwepu missed the deciding penalty as Wales number one Danny Ward denied him to help his side progress to the quarter-finals.

“It was a good victory for us,” the Northern Irishman told LCFC TV at full-time. “Of course, whenever you’ve got lots of players coming in who haven’t had a lot of game time, I thought we looked a little tired in the second half.

“But what you can’t question is the players’ mentality and their spirit. They showed great qualities, especially when they got the equaliser and we were able to score straight away. I’m delighted for the guys. They had to work very, very hard for it.

“Brighton are a good side, you can see they pass the ball well, but we always looked a threat. Your spirit can never be broken. There are some teams that can get pegged back and just don’t have that belief.

“Given everything, we had five Academy boys within the game, so that’s great to see them getting that experience. That’s a great education for them.

“We’ve always said our mindset is: ‘Listen, you’re never going to have it all your own way’. If you do go behind, or you do go level in the game, you keep pushing right to the very end.”

Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi is set to be sidelined for five weeks after he picked up an injury in his side’s match against Burnley on Saturday, September 25.

Ndidi has already missed a trip to the Polish capital of Warsaw and a visit to Selhurst Park – both times Leicester have come away without a win.

The 24-year-old’s hamstring injury means that Leicester are without one of their key players ahead of several important fixtures following the international break.

The Foxes host Manchester United in their first game after the October internationals and will have two clashes against Spartak Moscow in the UEFA Europa League in the space of a fortnight.

The injury also means that the defensive midfielder is unavailable for international duty with Nigeria, who face the Central African Republic twice in the World Cup qualifiers.

“Wilf did it in the Burnley game, which was unfortunate,” Rodgers said, quoted by the Daily Mail. “He missed the Legia Warsaw game through suspension and also Crystal Palace.

“It could be four to five weeks before he is back, we’ll see how it goes.”

Other games in the timeframe specified include away matches against Brentford and Leeds and home fixtures against Brighton and Arsenal, the former being a Carabao Cup tie.

Ndidi has played seven games for the FA Cup champions this season, amassing 629 minutes across two competitions.

Leicester recently played out a 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace in which Hamza Choudhury filled in for the Nigerian.

Leicester City centre-back Jonny Evans has been included in Ian Baraclough’s Northern Ireland squad for the first international break of the season.

The Leicester star has been included in the national team’s squad to face Lithuania, Estonia and Switzerland.

The news comes after Brendan Rodgers said that the 33-year-old’s situation would be reassessed after the international break.

“It’s just ongoing with Jonny and the injury,” Rodgers said. “We said we would see where he’s at after the international break. He’s not near to playing as of yet.”

Evans has not played a game for City since aggravating up an injury in the 2021 FA Cup final against Chelsea.

The Northern Irish centre-half has been struggling with a foot problem for several months and initially pulled up on it in a Premier League game against Newcastle United but was passed fit for the cup final.

Baraclough has vowed not to risk the defender’s long-term fitness during the September international break.

“Jonny is definitely going to be a doubt but I wasn’t going to name the squad without him if there was a small chance he was going to be involved,” said the boss. “He hasn’t started training with Leicester yet so it is a big ask for him to be involved but through conversations with him and Brendan, we all know the situation.

“Nobody is going to put him at risk when he’s not quite ready and gamble on him. If he can play a small part in the 10 days that we have together, we’ll give him every chance of that.

“We hope that we see him back fit and playing. We’d like to have him among our ranks, Leicester certainly would like him to be involved in their campaign so fingers crossed, but it is a doubt, I have to say.”

Leicester City were thrashed 4-1 by West Ham United on Monday night after going down to 10-men in the first half.

Striker Michail Antonio broke the goalscoring record for West Ham with a brace on the night and added an assist in an incredible performance.

Before the game, Antonio sat on 47 goals and had shared the record with club legend Paolo Di Canio.

Leicester winger Ayoze Perez was sent off after a stamp on West Ham attacking midfielder Pablo Fornals in the fortieth minute.

Michael Oliver gave the Leicester player a straight red card after a VAR review on the studs-up challenge.

Brendan Rodgers’ side had already gone behind after Fornals’ strike in the 26th minute found the net.

The Spaniard opened the scoring after combining with Said Benrahma to punish a poor pass from Leicester striker Jamie Vardy.

West Ham started the second half strongly and Antonio capitalised on another poor pass – this time from Caglar Soyuncu – to assist Benrahma who added a second for their side.

Leicester midfielder Youri Tielemans reduced the deficit 13 minutes later and gave his side some hope heading into the final twenty minutes.

However, West Ham pulled away with two goals in a matter of minutes near the end of the game courtesy of Antonio earning the side their second win on the bounce.

Antonio used his strength to hold off Soyuncu and score the record-breaking goal and celebrated with a cardboard cutout of himself.

Four minutes later, the 31-year-old nabbed his second of the game, taking himself one shy of a half-century for the Hammers.

Right-back Vladimir Coufal’s cross found Antonio who moved away from his marker and slotted home to put the icing on the cake.

Antonio’s performance throughout the game earned him a man of the match award and he now sits on 33 goals and assists in his last 43 Premier League starts.

The game leaves Leicester in disarray with only one senior recognised centre-back fit (Caglar Soyuncu) after their new signing Jannik Vestergaard was injured in training.

Leicester will travel to Norwich City for their next game on Saturday, August 28th at 3:00 pm.

Leicester City winger Harvey Barnes has signed a new four-year contract with the club until 2025.

Barnes has made 101 appearances for the Foxes in all competitions so far, scoring 21 goals in that time.

The winger made his professional debut for the club five years ago when he appeared in a UEFA Champions League clash against Porto.

The 23-year-old has been on the club’s books since he was nine years old and came through the academy.

Barnes had a fantastic season in 2020/21, scoring 13 times and making his debut for England before injury brought an end to his season early.

“I’ve been here for so many years now, it feels like home,” he said.

“For me, it was a no-brainer. Of course, I wanted to extend my stay here.

“It’s been something that’s been going on in the background and to sign now is great. It’s right at the start of a new season as well, which I know everyone is excited about.”

The winger has established himself in the side under Brendan Rodgers and is a key figure in the Leicester attack.

He was unavailable for the FA Cup final last season through injury but played 72 minutes in the FA Community Shield win over Premier League champions Manchester City.

Barnes had loan spells at MK Dons, Barnsley and West Brom before breaking into his parent club’s first team.

The winger was involved in 16 goals in 28 appearances for West Brom and was recalled midway through the season by Leicester and Barnes has been a regular in the side since.

He was previously contracted to a five-year deal that he had signed in the summer of 2019.

Leicester City FC manager Brendan Rodgers has praised the club’s recruitment in light of Wesley Fofana’s injury in the pre-season.

Wesley Fofana fractured his right fibula after he was on the receiving end of a tackle from Villarreal attacker Fernando Nino.

“Obviously, to lose a player with such an injury in a friendly game was devastating for us – and for the player himself, more importantly,” Rodgers said in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports. “He had been very, very good over the course of pre-season and was looking forward to the beginning of the season.”

Rodgers drafted squad player Daniel Amartey into the centre of his defence for the Community Shield win over Manchester City on Saturday.

He was impressed with the Ghanaian’s performance beside Caglar Soyuncu as they kept a clean sheet against the likes of Riyad Mahrez.

However, the Leicester City boss is interested in strengthening the position with another signing after losing Fofana for a substantial period of time.

Rodgers told Sky Sports: “Hopefully we can. It’s an area where we are a little light with Jonny out as well for a period of time with a foot injury.

“With all the games we’re going to have over the course of the season, we need to have cover in those positions.

“It is something the club are currently looking at.”

Leicester has an impressive recent history when it comes to recruitment, with the injured French defender being one of the examples of this.

Their stellar recruitment led to the famous Premier League-winning season of 2015/16 as £5 million signing N’Golo Kante and £450,000 addition Riyad Mahrez shone alongside other cut-price players to take the side to the top of English football.

The trend has continued under Rodgers with the club having a net spend of £48.9 million under the former Liverpool and Celtic boss.

That is less than Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Leeds – all of whom they finished above last season.

Rodgers is involved in the recruitment process at the club and hailed their ability to find players suited to the club.

He added: “I think at this moment in time, Leicester City is a very attractive place to be. If you want to develop as a player, work in world-class training facilities and be a part of a real community club with a family feel, then this is a great place for you.”
