Marcelo Bielsa’s men are looking in trouble near the relegation zone as they travel to Brighton this weekend in the Premier League

Brighton v Leeds United will kick off at 17:30 on Saturday 27th November in the American Express Community Stadium. Referee Craig Pawson will take charge of the tie.

The match will also be shown live on Sky Sports Premier League Ireland.

Graham Potters’ Brighton side began the season as a surprise package but form has not been on their side recently. They are now seven games without a win but they have also managed five draws in that time.

Last week they lost 2-0 away to Aston Villa and now they lie in ninth place, level on points with Man United. They will now be without their striker, Danny Welbeck so Potter will likely rely on Neal Maupay and Leandro Trossard for goals.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side are suffering from second-season syndrome as the team sits in 17th place only two points in the clear. The Argentine will need to change his team’s fortunes in the next three games before they go into a very challenging Christmas period.

Last week, a weakened side put it up to Antonio Conte’s Tottenham team but lost 2-1. On Saturday, they will again rely heavily on Daniel James and Kalvin Phillips as they wait for stars to return from injury.

This has become a common fixture in the last decade between the Premier League and Championship. Brighton has been the stronger of the two teams having won 10 of the 14 games. Two games have ended in draws and the Whites have been victorious twice.

The Seagulls did the double over Leeds last season keeping a clean sheet in both games, including a 2-0 win at home in May.

Expect the game to end 2-1 to Brighton with the home advantage playing a factor.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are preparing to face one of the Premier League’s biggest surprises this season in Brighton on Saturday

Brighton v Arsenal will kick off at 17:30 on Saturday, 2nd October in the Brighton Community Stadium with Jonathan Moss officiating. The match will be shown live on Sky Sports Premier League.

Graham Potter’s team has shocked many neutral fans with some strong performances in the league. Seagulls’ fans will be very happy after a late comeback draw against Crystal Palace last week.

Although they stand in sixth place, they will be a little worried by the injury to their talismanic midfielder Yves Bissouma.

After a bad start, Arsenal is not hot on Brighton’s heels. Another win could put them one point off their opponents in the table and springboard them into the top seven.

But like Brighton, the Gunners will be without a leader in midfield. It has been confirmed that former captain Granit Xhaka could miss out on games until after the New Year with a knee injury. He will likely be replaced by young Belgian Albert Sambi-Lokonga.

This has been a very tense affair in recent years with Brighton striker Neil Maupay being a famous villain to the Gunners. In their last 10 meetings, Arsenal has won five games including both games last season.

Betting

Brighton and Hove Albion 2/1

Draw 21/10

Arsenal 29/20

Score Prediction

This game could easily go either way judging by the unexpected form of both teams. Brighton’s home advantage on the south coast could play a part in their fortunes against Arteta’s men. A loss could end up being detrimental to both sides’ seasons and it will be important for them to keep adding points.

Expect the game to end 2-2 with the Gunners’ winning streak coming to an end.

He netted the opener as his Brighton & Hove Albion side went on to win 2-0.

Irish midfielder/forward Andrew Moran has attracted serious attention from top clubs in recent weeks. His performance today in the u17 Premier League cup will do nothing to quell that interest.

The 17-year-old scored an unbelievable goal to open the scoring, expertly turning past his man on the half-way line before running towards goal and finishing cleverly into the bottom corner from just outside the box.

Marcus Ifill scored Brighton’s second in the 80th minute in what turned out to be the final goal of the contest. The Seagulls were then crowned u17 Premier League Cup winners.

Aside from his goal, Moran looked the best player on the pitch, demonstrating an outstanding touch and quick feet as well as an eye for a pass. Although he’s just 17, it already looks as though he has outgrown that level. His compatriots Evan Ferguson and James Furlong are regular fixtures in the Brighton u23 team and it looks like Moran may be on a similar trajectory.

The Dubliner previously played for Bray Wanderers and only signed for Brighton last summer, but he’s taken no time in adjusting to a new culture and change in level. Moran has a highly impressive 11 goals and 12 assists at u18 Premier League level this season, showing that he not only has an eye for goal, but also for a killer pass.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR ANDREW MORAN?

Although there’s plenty of interest in Moran’s services at the moment, he could be better served staying at Brighton for the time being.

As mentioned previously, it seems like Moran has really settled at the club. So a change in scenery may not be the best thing for his development at this stage.

Also, Brighton have shown that there’s a pathway to the first-team for young players in recent years. Robert Sanchez, Ben White and Aaron Connolly are just some examples of footballers who’ve progressed from underage to first-team level at the club.

It looks very likely that Moran will be promoted to the u23 team next season given his performances this season, so that should provide a new challenge for the 17-year-old.

The Irish underage international joined Brighton from Bohemians in January.

Evan Ferguson first came to public attention in the summer of 2019 when he came on as a substitute – and assisted a goal – against Chelsea in a pre-season friendly. He was just 14 years of age at the time.

Months later, still only 14, he made his senior competitive debut for Bohemians in a League of Ireland fixture against Derry City. His appearance that day was subject to much controversy as he became the youngest player to ever appear in a League of Ireland match.

Two years on and Ferguson is now plying his trade for Brighton’s u23s in the PL2. The striker joined Brighton from Bohemians in January for an undisclosed fee, just weeks after winning the u17 Airtricity League.

Since joining, the striker has played 9 games in the PL2, scoring 3 goals in the process.

Yesterday, he scored two goals against a Liverpool u23 side which included Welsh international Ben Woodburn and a number of highly-rated prospects. Unfortunately for Ferguson and Brighton though, Liverpool showed their quality in the end and ran out 3-2 victors.

His first goal demonstrated his anticipation and finishing ability as he latched onto a misplaced back-pass, moved in on goal and struck superbly into the top left-hand corner.

His second goal came after an excellent team move. After a succession of quick passes, the ball found it’s way out to Ayo Tanimowo on the wing who proceeded to cross into the box and find Evan Ferguson who was in the right place at the right time to provide the finish.

Aaron Connolly also featured on the Brighton bench.

Caoimhin Kelleher started his first Premier League game for two months this evening as Liverpool took on Brighton at Anfield.

Kelleher’s previous start came against Wolves in December. A game he impressed in as he kept a clean sheet and made a handful of impressive saves.

Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies signed for Liverpool on deadline day but neither were to be seen in the starting line-up.

Instead, Davies took to the bench while Kabak didn’t feature in the squad at all.

Aaron Connolly started on the Brighton bench just days after receiving vile online abuse which caused him to deactivate his Twitter account.

The abuse came after Connolly missed a chance to double Brighton’s advantage over Tottenham on Sunday.

A win for Liverpool would propel them to 3rd in the table, overtaking Leicester City.

Brighton, on the other hand, were hoping for a positive result to create further distance between themselves and the relegation zone.

FIRST HALF

The match started at a frantic pace but goalscoring opportunities were hard to come despite the intense approach.

Defences stood firm during the opening period of the half, however both teams were looking more and more dangerous as the minutes passed.

In fact, it wasn’t until the 23rd minute that an opportunity of any kind came along.

The ball was played onto Neal Maupay and he initially did well in the box to evade a handful of Liverpool defenders before his shot was deflected. The ball then found it’s way to the feet of Dan Burn but his effort sailed harmlessly over the bar.

Chances remained at a premium as the first half finished scoreless.

Brighton looked the more likely to score of the two, much improvement was needed from JĂŒrgen Klopp’s men in the second half.

SECOND HALF

Liverpool started the second half with much more urgency than they ended the first.

They did, however, struggle to create chances of note.

The same cannot be said about Brighton as they opened the scoring with a brilliant team goal in the 56th minute.

Steven Alzate was the goalscorer as he started a rare Premier League game. He got on the end of a Dan Burn header and made no mistake in finding the back of the net.

The Colombian international burst onto the scene a couple of years ago but his game time has become increasingly limited. Perhaps this evening’s solid performance and goal will give Graham Potter something to think about in the coming weeks.

Mohamed Salah had an excellent opportunity to equalize from a Trent Alexander-Arnold low cross in the 70th minute but he uncharacteristically blazed over the bar. The Egyptian was in plenty of space in the box but he failed to make it count.

Caoimhin Kelleher was called into action in the 74th minute as he displayed good reflexes to deny Pascal Groß’s low effort.

He denied Brighton a second time moments later with another strong save to avoid any mounting danger.

The Corkman did well to keep the scoreline at 1-0.

Another Irishman, Aaron Connolly, came on in the 82nd minute to add more fuel to an already impressive Brighton attack.

Liverpool had their half chances but never looked likely to find the net realistically.

Full time sounded with the scoreline at 1-0 to Brighton, and deservedly so, too.

Liverpool remain in 4th while Brighton climb to 15th, easing their relegating worries by a great deal.

The former Bohs’ striker has been named in Brighton u23’s starting XI for the first time since joining the club.

Evan Ferguson has come a long way since playing against Chelsea in a pre-season friendly less than 2 years ago at just 14 years of age.

Tonight, he has been selected to start against Arsenal u23s at 7 o’clock mere weeks after joining the club from Bohemians. This is highly unusual given his age profile and his limited time at the club.

His selection just goes to show the levels of potential the young striker is showing.

Ferguson won the u17 National league with Bohemians almost exactly a month to the day.

He scored a goal of the highest order on the day to help Bohemians secure the title, a scintillating backheel under pressure that the finest of strikers would be proud of.

Even then, you could see the clear gap in quality – and physicality – between Ferguson and the other players.

He is not the only Irishman playing, though.

Starting on the same side as Ferguson is 18-year-old James Furlong, the former Shamrock Rovers full-back who has performed well enough to earn himself in the u23s this season.

On the opposite side is Mazeed Ogungbo, an 18-year-old defender who may make his first PL2 appearance of the season tonight. He has been named on the bench in a team which includes a number of talented players.

Viewers were treated to a handful of surprise results.

We’re now nearly a ⅓ of the way through the Premier League season, meaning many of those near the top of the table will be looking to establish themselves as title contenders going into January.

There were a number of captivating matches played today which sprung some surprise results.

Here’s how today’s Premier League games played out:

SOUTHAMPTON vs. SHEFFIELD UNITED

The 12 o’clock kick off featured a jubilant Southampton against a lowly Sheffield United side.

Southampton have started the season very well. Prior to kick off, they collected 20 points from just 11 matches. Sheffield United, on the other hand, could hardly have started the season any worse. They only picked up 1 point in 11 games which is in complete contrast to the start they had last season.

Thing didn’t get much better for The Blades today as they were easily beaten 3-0.

Che Adams opened the scoring in the 34th minute after latching on to a deflection of his teammate Jan Bednarek.

Stuart Armstrong was fortunate to get the 2nd goal of the game as his shot from outside the box trickled into the net from a deflection.

Nathan Redmond completed the rout in the 83rd minute with a placed shot into the bottom corner.

Southampton now sit 4th in the Premier League table after tonight’s result. Sheffield United remain bottom. Although the season is only early yet, Sheffield United will need a miracle to stay up based on their form thus far. They were never prolific goalscorers last season but their defensive structure ensured the team a comfortable survival. This season, they have neither of the above.

CRYSTAL PALACE vs. TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

Tottenham faced a difficult trip to Selhurst Park today as they looked to solidify their place as the top of the table.

Both teams have started the season well – particularly Tottenham – and would have been confident going into the match. Crystal Palace had the added boost of fans being on their side for the first time this season.

It was Tottenham who opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, though. Harry Kane struck from range and his shot was completely misjudged by Crystal Palace keeper Vicente Guaita before hitting the back of the net. Guaita had produced a number of good saves prior to the goal so for him to concede in that fashion was unfortunate.

Crystal Palace weren’t going to lie down and accept defeat, though. They had a couple of chances to equalize until they got their goal in the 81st minute, and through an unlikely source. Jeffrey Schlupp equalised after confusion in the box from a free kick to score his first goal of the season.

As mentioned before, Vicente Guaita made a succession of good saves before his mistake led to the opening goal. He more than made up for his mistake with a handful of outstanding saves in the dying embers of the game. He made one particular save from a Harry Kane free kick which could be a contender for save of the season. The Spaniard looked beaten as Kane’s free kick was heading to the corner but he showed supreme agility and reflexes to tip the ball over the bar.

The match finished 1-1 to Spurs. They were still top of the table, but Liverpool were to play later and if they collected all 3 points that position would change hands.

FULHAM vs. LIVERPOOL

Fulham have looked good at times this season, but have struggled to pick up points despite their impressive performances.

Both teams needed a win today but for different reasons, Liverpool had the chance of going top of the league while Fulham could have moved comfortably out of the relegation zone.

The match wasn’t as straightforward as Liverpool would have liked, with Fulham creating most of the good, early chances. Fulham had a number of shots but failed to find the back of the net. That is until the 25th minute. Bobby Decordova-Reid was played through on goal and he smashed his shot into the corner, leaving the returning Alisson with no chance.

Fulham could have easily gone 2-0 up not too long afterwards after uncharacteristically poor defending from Andy Robertson afforded Ivan Cavaleiro a chance from close range. His shot, though, was too close to the keeper and Alisson dealt with the chance routinely.

Liverpool had a handful of chances to equalize, but their goal didn’t come until the 79th minute. They had their share of the luck as they were awarded a penalty after a handball in the box. Mohamed Salah then stepped up to take and *just* slotted past the Fulham keeper.

Liverpool now sit on level points with Tottenham having failed to take their opportunity to go top. Fulham currently sit 18th, just inside the relegation zone.

ARSENAL vs. BURNLEY

Both teams have had unremarkable seasons thus far this season. Arsenal, in particular, have been poor and are performing well below expectations.

The first half was predictably uneventful, with chances hard to come by for both teams. The second half, though, produced a series of talking points.

The first of which came in the 58th minute as Granit Xhaka was sent off for a second yellow after unnecessarily handling his opponent by the throat. His dismissal made it even more difficult for Arsenal to get a result, having played with little conviction even beforehand.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ended his goal drought in the 73rd minute. He would have, however, preferred it to go into the other net. The Gabon international scored an own goal as he headed past Bernd Leno from a Burnley corner.

Robbie Brady cleared off the line in the dying embers of injury time to ensure a Burnley victory.

Burnley’s win moves them out of the relegation zone while Arsenal loom dangerously over it. Making matters worse, Arsenal have an unenviable schedule going into the Christmas period including a succession of games against Southampton, Everton, Chelsea and Liverpool.

LEICESTER vs. BRIGHTON

Leicester have started this season on a high and, although it’s a long shot, could be potential title contenders with consistency in their performances. Contrastingly, Brighton haven’t made the best start to the season, despite playing good football at times.

Leicester hit the front in the 27th minute through a James Maddison deflected strike. The midfielder was left out of the latest England squad, so he’ll be hoping his performance can impress enough to warrant his inclusion in the next one.

Jamie Vardy scored his 12th goal of the season in the 41st minute to double Leicester’s advantage.

James Maddison completed his brace and the scoring on the night in the 44th minute. What a goal it was as well. He made some space for himself just inside the box using his trickery before curling his shot into the top corner leaving no chance for the keeper.

Leicester’s win tonight leaves them 3rd in the Premier League table, just 1 point behind Spurs and Liverpool. Brighton remain just above the relegation zone with 10 points from 12 games.

Brighton scored a late equaliser after an injury time penalty was awarded.

Liverpool travelled to The Amex this afternoon for their meeting with Brighton. A win – or draw – for Liverpool would mean they go top of the table momentarily, with Tottenham still to play. They only managed a draw in the end after a late Brighton penalty to the displeasure of Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool fans alike.

Brighton manager Graham Potter has his side playing fast, progressive football. They have, however, struggled for goals despite retaining possession well and creating chances. That was the same story today as they squandered a number of opportunities to take the lead, they will, however, be satisfied with the end result.

Liverpool had a succession of half chances early in the match but failed to capitalize.

Brighton were the ones to fashion the first big chance of the match. Neal Maupay did well on the halfway line to turn his defender before playing Aaron Connolly through on goal. The Irish striker had the goal at his mercy but he dragged his shot wide. A brilliant chance for Brighton to take the lead.

Connolly caused Liverpool yet more problems in the 19th minute as he was upended by Neco Williams in the Liverpool box. He turned provider for Maupay on this occasion as the French striker stepped up to take the penalty. He sent Alisson the wrong way, but shot wide of the post while doing so.

Just minutes after the striker walked straight down the tunnel while clutching his hamstring. A nightmare few minutes for him.

Liverpool forwards Mohamed Salah thought he gave his side the lead in the 35th minute as he was played in behind before finishing past Matt Ryan. After a lengthy check by VAR though, the Egyptian was adjudged to be slightly offside which in turn ruled the goal out.

A small number of half chances for both sides followed before the referee sounded for the break. Brighton might have felt hard done by not to be in the lead.

Brighton’s hard luck in front of goal eventually came back to haunt them in the 60th minute. It was that man again, Diogo Jota, who put his side in the lead. After a good run in which he made space for himself, the Portuguese international finished sharply into the bottom left corner.

Connolly and Salah were taken off within minutes of each other shortly after the goal. Neither were happy with their manager’s decision to make the substitution – and rightly so. Although Salah has had better games, he still looked dangerous on occasion and being a key player for the team, would have expected to last the full 90. The substitution was likely taken as a fitness precaution given the Egyptian’s recent positive Covid-19 test, but he obviously felt up to the mark based on the reaction. Aaron Connolly was equally bemused and frustrated with his substitution. After a string of matches where the Irish striker started on the bench, he got his chance in the starting XI today. Although he missed an early opportunity to take the lead, he caused serious problems for Liverpool on occasion.

Liverpool thought they had the game wrapped up in the 84th minute after Sadio Mane headed in from a Fabinho free kick. Upon review, however, the Senegalese forward had strayed offside meaning the goal would be disallowed.

Liverpool looked fairly comfortable despite Brighton’s refusal to lay down and probably thought they were good value for the lead. VAR would strike again, though, as another penalty was awarded in injury time after Brighton forward Danny Welbeck was fouled in the area. Referee Stuart Attwell was called over to the monitor to review the incident after a VAR check and controversially pointed to the spot after some thought.

Pascal Gross stepped up to take the penalty this time. He made no mistake as he sent the keeper the wrong way and into the back of the net. Jurgen Klopp wasn’t too pleased with the decision as he sarcastically applauded the officials from the sideline.

There was to be no further contentious issues as the match finished as a 1-1 draw. Liverpool can feel hard done by given the number of VAR incidents against them during the match, but a Brighton loss would have equally been harsh.

Republic of Ireland international Aaron Connolly has signed a new four year deal with Brighton and Hove Albion the club have announced.

The 20 year old had a superb debut season in the Premier League and has now put pen to paper to extend his stay at the club. In all Connolly made 27 appearances in the season scoring three goals. Two of which came against Tottenham and then against Burnley on the final day of the season. He made his Republic of Ireland debut a week after scoring that brace against Spurs. His debut came off the bench against Georgia, before starting three days later against Switzerland.

The Galway man told the clubs website that he was thrilled to extend his stay at the club. He said, “This season has been unbelievable at times and obviously the Tottenham game when I scored twice was a big moment for me. But then I had the dip where I didn’t get the goals which was tough to take”. He continued, “But to get one against Burnley on the final day of the season and to go into the break knowing I have scored another goal since Spurs was a great feeling. I am just looking forward improving even more next season.”

Seagulls manager Darren Potter also got praise from Connolly. He said, “Without the manager I don’t think I would have played any Premier League games for Brighton by now,”. Connolly said he now wants to repay that faith next season and score more goals which would make himself happier. He said, “I owe a lot to him and I want to repay that faith that he has shown in me next season. The trust he has put in me is a huge bonus even without the goals, so if I can score regularly next season it will make me even happier.”
