Saïd Benrahma was among those players who got a move

The domestic transfer window for England closed yesterday at 5.p.m. as clubs scurried to get deals over the line. Clubs within England’s top 4 divisions were free to sign any domestically based player on loan or transfer until the deadline occurred – with leeway given as the final details of deals were completed.

The clubs affected are now unable to sign any players until the window opens again on the 1st of January. There were several deals done on what was a busy deadline day across the 4 divisions.

Here’s a round up of the higher profile deals done on the day:

PREMIER LEAGUE

SAÏD BENRAHMA – BRENTFORD TO WEST HAM – LOAN

Benrahma finally got his move after months of speculation about a move away from Brentford. The winger has been linked with a series of clubs throughout the window, including but not limited to Chelsea, Aston Villa and West Ham. Aston Villa fans will be grinding their teeth with the news of the deal. Benrahma was heavily linked with Villa earlier in the window with reports of a deal almost being finalised before falling through at the last minute.

Benrahma had an impressive season for Brentford last season. He registered an impressive 17 goals and 8 assists in 43 minutes. Benrahma operates as an inverted winger on the left-hand side and possesses supreme technical ability which has earned him plenty of plaudits. The Premier League will be a good test for Benrahma to see if he’s capable of performing at the highest level.

JACK BUTLAND – STOKE TO CRYSTAL PALACE – £1 MILLION

It feels like a long time ago since Jack Butland was rated as one of the top keepers in England. He’s been stuck in the championship with Stoke since 2018 and his reputation has somewhat dwindled in that time.

In spite of that, £1 million for a keeper like Butland is a very good deal. Butland will likely be backup rather than a starter with the form of Vicente Guaita performing between the sticks. This is a great chance for Butland to get his career back on track after a miserable couple of seasons.

TERENCE KONGOLO – HUDDERSFIELD TO FULHAM – LOAN

Another loan deal in the Premier League seen Terence Kongolo join up with Fulham for the season. Premier League fans may be familiar with Kongolo given his appearances for Huddersfield in the competitions a couple seasons ago.

Kongolo has also played for Feyenoord, where he came through in their academy, and Monaco. He also has a World Cup third place medal to his name as he was a member of the Netherlands 2014 World Cup squad.

He should provide good defensive cover for Fulham in what has been a difficult season to date.

JOE RODON – SWANSEA TO TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR – £11 MILLION

Spurs will be pleased to get this deal over the line having courted the defender for the past couple of months. Rodon will already be familiar with a couple of faces in the Spurs squad having been part of the Wales senior national team with Gareth Bale and Ben Davies.

Rodon finds himself joining a Spurs team in good form after dismantling Manchester United 6-1 in their previous fixture. Described himself as a “modern-day centre-half”, he should adapt to the Premier League easily given proficiency of the ball. He’ll be hoping he can establish himself as a regular first team player sooner rather than later.

CHAMPIONSHIP

HARVEY ELLIOTT – LIVERPOOL TO BLACKBURN ROVERS – LOAN

Blackburn managed to snap up Liverpool youngster Harvey Elliott on loan until the end of the season. Elliott already has quite a reputation despite just turning 17 recently. Previous to playing for Liverpool, Elliott became the youngest Premier League player of all time for Fulham at 16 years and 30 days old.

Since joining Liverpool, Elliott has made a handful of first team appearances. He’s mainly appeared in cup competitions but has also made a couple of Premier League appearances.

Elliott is a player with great technique and creativity, he should prove a good signing for Blackburn but only time will tell.

HARRY WILSON – LIVERPOOL TO CARDIFF CITY – LOAN

Another Liverpool player on the move to the Championship. Harry Wilson could be seen as a bit of a coup for Cardiff City having already gained bags of senior experience on loan at several clubs, including a stint with Bournemouth in the Premier League.

Wilson is a player with a wicked left foot, capable of hitting the target from range in open play and set pieces. Cardiff narrowly missed out on promotion last season and will be looking to go the extra step this time around.

RYAN BENNETT – WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS TO SWANSEA – UNDISCLOSED

Bennett is a player with a great deal of experience throughout all levels of English football. He played a handful of games for Wolves in the Premier League last season and looked comfortable in each appearance.

Although the departure of Joe Rodon will have hurt Swansea fans, the addition of Ryan Bennett as well as Joel Latibeaudiere – who also signed on deadline day – should provide good defensive options in Rodon’s absence.

Swansea have started the season well and find themselves in 4th. They haven’t competed in the Premier League since 2018 so they’ll be hoping they can return to the top come the end of this term.

LEAGUE ONE

OLAMIDE SHODIPO – QPR TO OXFORD – LOAN

Shodipo is a player that at 23, would have hoped to have more senior experience than he has. A former Irish u21 international, Oxford fans will be hoping Shodipo can help in what has been a poor season so far – although Oxford have played just 4 games.

Shodipo is a pacey and direct winger who likes to drive to the byline before delivering crosses. He appeared a handful of times for QPR last season and he’ll be looking to get more experience under his belt at a lower level.

ANDREW SHINNIE – LUTON TOWN TO CHARLTON – LOAN

Charlton got relegated last season in what was a difficult time in the Championship. They haven’t started the League One season especially well either, only gaining 4 points from 4 games despite being one of the favourites for promotion.

Shinnie is a good signing for Charlton and could be the spark needed to get their season up and running. Shinnie has plenty of experience in the English lower divisions, particularly in the Championship but also in League One and Two.

He helped Luton Town gain promotion in 2019 and will be looking to do the same with Charlton.

LEAGUE TWO

PETER KIOSO – LUTON TOWN TO BOLTON WANDERERS – LOAN

Bolton have fallen a long way from where they were 10 years ago. Financial strain has taken its toll on the club and certainly has contributed to the club’s downfall from the Premier League into League Two. They’ve not started the League Two season particularly well either, sitting near the bottom on 6 points.

Nevertheless, Peter Kioso should be a good signing at the back. Born in Ireland to Congolese parents, Kioso has impressed in the last few years which earned him a move to the Championship. He hasn’t played much for Luton, only featuring once in the Championship, so his arrival at Bolton should only be a good thing for the man from Swords.

The highlight of Kioso’s career so far was a man of the match performance against Manchester United earlier in the season. If he can produce performances of a similar level at League Two level it will be business very well done by Bolton.
