Carlow football has been rocked by the sudden resignation of senior manager Shane Curran, just 11 days before their Leinster Senior Football Championship opener against Meath.

The former Roscommon goalkeeper, who took charge last August, departs after only seven months at the helm. His final game in charge came last Sunday as Carlow edged past London in a thrilling 1-18 to 1-17 victory.

“Shane Curran has informed Carlow GAA that he and his backroom team are stepping away from the management of the Carlow senior football team with immediate effect,” the Carlow County Board announced in a statement.

The statement added the decision was “based on player-related issues which he believed were beyond the scope of the management team.”

During the Allianz National Football League, Carlow finished fourth in Division 4 with a record of three wins, three losses, and one draw. However, the campaign was not without its issues. Several players reportedly left the panel mid-season, and coach James Clarke also exited the setup.

Carlow GAA is now searching for an interim manager to take charge ahead of their crucial Leinster SFC first-round clash with Meath, set for April 6th at Páirc Tailteann.

What’s Next for Carlow GAA?

With just days to prepare, the challenge for Carlow now shifts to regrouping and appointing a capable interim boss who can stabilise the squad ahead of their provincial opener.

Why Did Shane Curran Resign?

The former goalkeeper’s resignation highlights potential internal issues in the setup, with sources pointing to ongoing difficulties with player commitment and squad harmony.

Carlow and Longford will provide the closing game for the Leinster Senior Football Championship preliminary round on Sunday at 4:30 pm.

The game will be held at O’Connor Park and coverage of the game will be on GAAGO.

The two teams have had contrasting seasons so far with Carlow impressing but ultimately falling short in the National Football League Division Four while Longford did the opposite in Division Three.

Carlow impressed in Division Four after their strong displays against Waterford and Wexford, against whom they looked a level above.

However, they looked a level below Division Three-bound Louth in their semi-final tie, missing out on promotion as a result.

Their attack looked sharp in all three games.

The quality of Jamie Clarke, Paul Broderick and Darragh Foley in the final third shone throughout the season and the trio will certainly give the Longford defence problems.

The O’Farrell County had a particularly hard time in their season opener against Derry, conceding 21 points.

Cavan registered more (22) but Longford put up a fight to soften the blow.

Longford looked a class below Derry but had close games with Cavan and Fermanagh, the latter being a draw.

The former fell away from them in the second half but their second-half performance against Tipperary in the relegation showcased their potential.

The Fermanagh game was almost a win for the Slashers but a late equaliser prevented that.

Padraic Davis’ men showed some grit in defence and blew Davy Power’s Munster Champions out of the water (and Division Three).

Rian Brady has starred for them in the final third and will look to continue his good form in the Leinster SFC.

Darren Gallagher’s goalscoring exploits have proved important while the ever-reliable Robbie Smyth has also been a feature in this capable Longford attack.

Considering what they did to Division Three defences this year, it is tough to look past Longford in this tie.

Carlow have a chance to secure a place in the Joe McDonagh Cup Final with a game to spare this weekend. A victory against Kerry would see them leapfrog the kingdom in the standings. The Leinster side have a game in hand against the top two teams. As a result, Kerry need a win here to keep themselves in with a chance of making the final. Currently, they are a point in arrears to Antrim who defeated them last weekend. Kerry vs Carlow takes place on Saturday afternoon.

Click here for live score commentary

Kerry conceded three first-half goals to the northerners which proved to be critical. In contrast, they failed to take goal chances of their own. For example, a Shane Conway penalty miss left Fintan O’Connor’s side with too much to do.

In fairness, Kerry started the second-half very well. But, a ten-point deficit at half-time was too much to overturn, especially when Antrim kept the scoreboard ticking. Fionan MacKessy was shown the line in injury time for Kerry but the game was effectively over by then.

A week previously, Carlow edged out Meath to put them in a very strong position. The 2018 winners had drawn their opener with Antrim, making it a decisive game. Likewise, Meath needed a win. The Ulster team were given a huge boost when Marty Kavanagh scored a goal from the penalty spot. By half-time, Carlow had a six-point lead.

However, they couldn’t put their opponents to bed in the second half. Luckily, Meath’s accuracy let them down in the third quarter and Antrim remained ahead. Despite an injury time scare, Carlow prevailed. Now, they come into this game refreshed after a week’s absence.

Last year, Carlow were relegated from the Senior Championship after finishing last in Leinster. Colm Bonnar will be eager to guide his team straight back to the top tier.

With this being Kerry’s last chance to earn a place in the final, the home draw will suit them. On the other hand, Carlow know that a win here doesn’t end their charge. But, Bonnar’s side would rather seal their fate as soon as possible.

Betting

Bookmakers have Carlow at slight 11/10 favourites. Kerry are priced at 11/10 and a draw is 8/1.

Prediction

The draw looks a great bet at 8/1

Offaly vs Carlow is an interesting one in the Leinster Championship on Sunday. Offaly stayed safe in Division 3 despite losing to Tipperary and Derry in their last two games. In contrast, Carlow claimed four points from their last two league games. However, they only got one game under their belts as London conceded in round 7.

As a result, it is hard to gauge how the sides match up heading into this one. Last year, Meath defeated both sides in Leinster. Carlow didn’t survive in the qualifies but Offaly claimed a couple of scalps before being eliminated.

But, there is no such second chance this year so these two sides will be up for this one. It is a great chance for both teams to advance provincially. The winner on Sunday earns a shot at Kildare.

After 50 minutes, Offaly only had 1-03 on the scoreboard against Derry. They did creep back towards the end but the damage was done. In the Championship, they won’t be allowed such time to settle in.

Carlow netted twice in their one game against Sligo. Goals win games and Carlow will be looking to attack Offaly in a similar way.

Paddy Power have Offaly the favourites at 4/9 as opposed to Carlow at 9/4. A draw is 15/2.

The game is live on GAA GO.

Prediction: Draw.

The Division 4 game of Carlow vs Sligo is the Leinster side’s only opportunity for competitive match practice ahead of the Championship. This is because of the cancellation of their round 7 game against London.

Allianz Football Division 4 round 6
Carlow v Sligo, Netwatch Cullen Park, 5pm Preview and live score commentary

Currently, Sligo sit two points ahead of Carlow. Wins over London, Antrim and Wexford have them on 6 points. However, losses to Wicklow and Waterford mean that promotion is a big ask. But, two wins in their remaining two fixtures could see them go up if other results go their way.

In a similar way, Carlow have two defeats on their record. These came against Wexford and Limerick after an opening win over Wicklow. Then, draws with Antrim and Waterford ruled out any potential promotion. Yet, Carlow have the blessing of a guaranteed two points from round 7 due to London’s inability to play. Therefore, there is nothing to stop them from giving everything against Sligo in hopes of a respectable finish.

These are the two sides who suffered relegation from Division 3 in 2019. As it stands, it does not look likely that either team is on course for immediate resurrection. But, the middle of the table is very condensed and two good performances from Sligo could see them jump towards the top.

The Connacht side need to hit the ground running. Their Championship begins on November 7th away to Galway. They will be obvious underdogs but, in a straight knock-out Championship, just two wins could have them in an All-Ireland semi-final.

In contrast, Carlow begin their Championship a week earlier. They play Offaly on November 1st in the first round of the Leinster Championship. With this in mind, they will be grateful for the recovery they will get instead of playing round 7 of the League.

Westmeath have relegated Carlow Division 2 for 2021 after a 1-17 to 2-08 win over Carlow at TEG Cusack Park.

Carlow aided with the wind in the opening didn’t play well. They in fact were seven points at the break. Westmeath showed they wanted to win it more, winning the important challenges, coming out of the ball when they shouldn’t have and landing some superb scores. Killian Doyle had the home side three points ahead early on, but Carlow responded through scores from Marty Kavanagh, Jack Kavanagh and Diarmuid Byrne. The game now level.

Doyle knocked over another score to give Westmeath the advantage once again. Doyle then found the back of the Carlow net beating Damien Jordan to give the Lake County a four point lead. Colm Bonnar’s side then tagged on a free from Marty Kavanagh, Westmeath though finished strongly with the next four scores. 1-08 to 0-04 at the break.

Chris Nolan registered the first two scores of the second half to cut the gap to five. Once again though Westmeath knocked over four points, the gap now out to nine. Killian Doyle absolutely superb for Shane O’Brien. The game appeared to be all over when Doyle put ten points between the sides. However, Carlow grabbed two goals in quick succession. Marty Kavanagh finishing a penalty on 60 minutes, while Diarmuid Byrne flicked the ball to the net on 64 minutes after Aonghus Clarke was caught in possession. Killian Doyle registered a sideline cut and he would knock over his 14th point of the game from a free to seal a 6 point win for Westmeath. Carlow will now play in Division 2 next season, while Westmeath remain in Division 1. The sides will play each other again in the Joe McDonagh Cup in the coming weeks.

This game decides what team drops down to Division 2 for 2021. It is a big game for both sides and likely the biggest game of the year for them. In truth both sides struggled in Division 1a and 1b.

Westmeath failed to win a game in Division 1a. However they lost five games. They finished with a scoring difference of – 59. They suffered heavy losses to Galway, Tipperary and Limerick in the division. However, they did push Cork close last time out. Shane O’Brien will know home advantage counts for a lot and a big home crowd could spur them to victory here. Westmeath have good players in their ranks like Aonghus Clarke, Eoin Price and Allan Devine in their ranks. The trio will need to be at their best for the Lake County to triumph here.

Colm Bonnars Carlow side come into the game on the back of five losses in Division 1b. The Barrowsiders finished with a scoring difference of – 70. They suffered heavy losses to Wexford, Kilkenny, Clare and Dublin. They lost narrowly to Laois 0-15 to 0-14.  Carlow will need a big performance here to come away from Mullingar with the win. They have the talent to do so. Chris Nolan, Marty Kavanagh and Jack Kavanagh will be key to the Barrowsiders success here.

Wexford put in a stunning performance to hammer Carlow by 21 points ,2-29 to 1-11 at Wexford Park on Sunday. Davy Fitzgerald’s side are in the quarter-finals. A Dublin win in Clare would have meant they would have progressed to the semi-finals but it wasn’t to be.

Wexford were quick of the blocks and took control early in the game. It was 0-07 to 0-00 after 13 minutes. Rory O’Connor (3), Liam Og McGovern, Jack O’Connor, Aidan Nolan and Harry Kehoe all pointing. However, Carlow would hit 1-03 to claw the game back to 0-07 to 1-03. David English landed a long ball into the box which was forced to the net by Diarmuid Byrne. Wexford though with all-star Diarmuid O’Keeffe knocked over a brace of points. Referee Colum Cunning then brandished 5 yellow cards after a scuffle between both sets of players. Wexford were coasting on the resumption and raced into a 1-17 to 1-07 lead. Things were made even easier for Wexford when Eddie Byrne was sent off on a second yellow card on 47 minutes. Wexford are in a good position here coming into this game. They currently sit second in Division 1B. They have played four games, winning three and losing one. The wins coming against Laois, Kilkenny and most recently Dublin. Davy Fitzgerald speaking after that game said, “It was probably one of the most frustrating games that I’ve ever been involved in,”. Fitzgerald will looks to players like Jack O’Connor, Diarmuid O’Keeffe and Liam Ryan.

Carlow are staring down at relegation now. They have yet to win a game in Division 1B under Colm Bonnar. They have 4 losses from 4 games. They lost heavily to Kilkenny, Clare and Dublin. However, They lost out 0-15 to 0-14 against Laois. Carlow have good players in their side though with the likes of Marty Kavanagh, John Michael Nolan and Chris Nolan. These players will need to be at their best if Carlow are to come away with the win here.
