Here is all the information you need for Saturday’s Ulster Football quarterfinal clash between Tyrone and Cavan

TYRONE  V CAVAN LIVE SCORES – CLICK HERE

The game will be shown on Sky Sports from 16:30 at Healy Park on Saturday, 10th July.

Tyrone had a relatively good league campaign finishing ahead of Armagh and Monaghan in the Roinn 1 North.

After finishing second in their group, they were heavily defeated by Kerry, this should not deter them from trying to reclaim the Ulster title this year.

In wing forward, Kieren McGeary will be the player to look out for, he is fast and well able to slot over points for his team.

Similar to Tipperary in Munster, Cavan was the surprise package, winning the Ulster championship last year. The league did not treat them so well with a loss to Wicklow leaving them relegated from Roinn 3.

All-Star Thomas Galligan has still shown that he is a great footballer throughout the county’s rough patch, they will need another classy performance in midfield to get a victory.

Both sides have known and prepared for this fixture since the end of April. This will be both their first competitive matches in a few weeks so expect some nervous tension to surround this match.

Predicted Starting 15

Tyrone

Morgan (GK); C. Monroe, R. McNamee, P. Hampsey; M. McKernan, P. Harte, L. Rafferty; M. Donnelly, F. Burns; K. McGeary, D. Canavan, C. Meyler; D. McCurry, C. McKenna, P. Donaghy.

Cavan

R Galligan (GK); C Reilly, P Faulkner, K Clarke; C Timoney, O Kiernan, L Fortune; T Galligan, C Brady; C McGovern, G McKiernan, M Reilly; C Madden, P Lynch, C Smith.

Betting

Tyrone are heavy favorites with odds of 1/7 to win.

For this game to end in a draw, the odds are 14/1.

Cavan could give a big payout if they pull off an upset with odds of 5/1 to win.

Score Prediction

In predicting this match, it is hard to overlook how poor Cavan’s league campaign was. Their confidence is going to be really low.

Expect Tyrone to take this opportunity to beat the reigning champions by more than three points.

Last weekend, the hurling semi-finals provided us with our GAA fix and didn’t disappoint. Now, the Gaelic semi-finals take centre stage, and on paper, they may not be as well matched. But as has been the way throughout the Championship, major upsets are never too far away. First up is Cavan vs Dublin on Saturday evening.

Among all the outsiders to record big wins in this year’s championship, no team has caused more upset than Cavan. The Ulster men would not have been backed by many to advance from the most competitive of the provincial Championships. Yet, they find themselves in an All-Ireland semi-final after winning their first Anglo-Celt Cup since 1997.

Firstly, Cavan provided an opening round shock by coming from seven points down to beat Monaghan in extra time. On that occasion, goalkeeper Raymond Galligan was the hero with a last-minute 55-metre free to send the Breffni men through.

Next, a run-of-the-mill win over Antrim was less of a headline. But, that was followed by another big turnaround. Micky Graham’s men beat Down in the semi-final despite being down by eight at the interval.

Most recently, they came up against Donegal in the final. Before the game, many were already matching up Donegal and Dublin with the belief that the O’Donnell men possessed the last chance to dethrone the Dubs. However, Cavan continued to rewrite the script.

At half-time, there was just two between the teams in Donegal’s favour. Cavan continued to plug away though and soon edged ahead. Then, in the closing moments Gearoid McKiernan floated a long ball into the Donegal square that Shaun Patton failed to deal with. As a result, Conor Madden put the ball in the net to ensure the game was beyond Donegal’s reach.

Despite the mass murmurings suggesting Cavan would have preferred to play Dublin outside of Croke Park, the Breffni men will be relishing the challenge. A chance to play in GAA headquarters has always been a just reward for the Provincial winners. Furthermore, Graham’s side have already proved they can put it up to the best.

Deadly Dublin

Unlike their semi-final opponents, Dublin progressed to this stage in a more typical manner. The five-in-a-row winners haven’t taken their foot off the gas and have seamlessly adjusted to life after Jim Gavin. The new man Dessie Farrell hasn’t been afraid to juggle the team that brought so much success. The emergence of Sean Bugler and Robbie McDaid is a prime example of the embarrassment of riches at Farrell’s disposal. Likewise, Paddy Small has kept Paul Mannion in reserve thus far.

They won their three Leinster Championship games against Westmeath, Laois and Meath by a combined 54 points. Perhaps even more impressively, they seem to have only been operating in third gear.

With the absence of Donegal and Kerry from the All-Ireland series of the Championship, all the money will be on Dublin to complete an unprecedented six-in-a-row. The only real unknown for many is who Farrell will select. Will he continue with his blend of old and new? Or will the likes of Brian Howard, Paul Mannion and Kevin McManamon force their way into the fifteen? Similarly, Cormac Costello continues to impress with every display. Costello successfully appealed against his red card against Meath making him available this weekend.

Those who are already lining up a Dublin vs Mayo Final for the third time in five years run the risk of speaking prematurely. This year’s Championship has been the most unpredictable in recent memory. However, for all of Cavan’s achievements in Ulster, Dublin are a different animal, especially in Croke Park.

The game is live on RTÉ and Sky Sports Mix.

Dublin are 1/50 favourites. On the other hand, Cavan are 16/1 and a draw is 33/1.

Prediction: Dublin.

It’s a repeat of last year’s Ulster Final in the Athletic Grounds on Sunday as Cavan attempt to dethrone Donegal again. Donegal claimed a five-point win last year but Cavan still went much further than many expected. Likewise, they have been major underdogs on two occasions already this year and have proved everyone wrong. But, Donegal have been proving they’re a class above their Ulster opponents so far this year. Hence, Cavan face their toughest task if they are to continue they’re trend of providing upsets.

Click for live score commentary of Cavan v Donegal

Firstly, the Breffni men got the Ulster Championship off to a spectacular start. With ten minutes left on the clock, they trailed Monaghan by six. Somehow Cavan came back to send the game to extra-time which was an achievement in itself. But, they smelled blood and pushed Monaghan all the way. Penalties seemed inevitable until goalkeeper Raymond Galligan scored the winner from 59metres out.

A reasonably comfortable win over Antrim followed but Cavan repeated their comeback trick last weekend against Down.

This time, they were on the wrong side of an eight-point deficit at half-time. It seemed like five games in five weeks was taking its toll on Mickey Graham’s men as bad handling and decision-making suggested fatigue. Furthermore, Down were just much more economical in possession.

But, Graham’s adjustments at the interval proved to be good ones. For example, Conor Madden came in and kicked three points in addition to two assists. Likewise, Thomas Galligan was put at full-forward and tied up the Down defence effectively. They smothered Down in midfield and the forwards capitalised with a steady stream of points to eclipse Down’s early lead.

Donegal hype train rolls on

Meanwhile, Donegal returned to the pitch for the first time since their duel with Tyrone. Armagh were the opposition and on paper it was going to be another stern test for Donegal’s credentials. Yet, half-time Declan Bonner’s side had blown the Orchard County out of the water and there was already talk of a Donegal-Dublin semi-final.

At the interval it was 1-12 to 0-3 after a display of sheer dominance by Donegal. Their physicality in the tackle made Armagh’s attacks absolutely futile. At the other end, size didn’t come at the expense of skill as the points continued to come.

Somewhat worryingly, Donegal’s defensive guardian Stephen McMenamin left the pitch after three minutes with a hamstring strain. Bonner admitted the chances of him being fit for this weekend’s final didn’t look good at the time.

Odhran McFadden-Ferry is another absentee for Donegal. He is on tour with the Irish Army. In addition, Paul Brennan left the pitch midway through the second-half due to injury.

In contrast, Paddy McBrearty got some well-needed Championship minutes and scored with his first contribution.

While Cavan have already proved themselves capable of turning the tide against major opponents, the Donegal train is at full tilt. They racked up 1-22 against Armagh in 70 minutes of pure precision.

Monaghan and Down had bad spells to allow Cavan back into their games. It’s hard to imagine Donegal showing such a lapse.

The Ulster final is live on RTÉ.

Paddy Power have Donegal at a short 1/10 versus Cavan’s 7/1. A draw is 10/1.

Prediction: Donegal. Cavan are no right-off. But, even their best is probably not enough to see them past Donegal here who are proving to be genuine title contenders.

Cavan added to their usurping of Monaghan with a win over Antrim last weekend. Now, they face Down in the Ulster semi-final. The Mourne man were victorious against Fermanagh in their quarter-final on Sunday. Both of these sides have made it to Ulster finals in recent years. Last season, Cavan made it to the decider but lost to Donegal. Likewise, Down played the 2017 final against Tyrone but came out on the wrong side. Now, one of these teams is guaranteed to contest the Anglo-Celt Cup again.

After their famous win over Monaghan, Cavan returned to action against Antrim last weekend. Initially they made the game hard work for themselves. Antrim were well set-up defensively. But, even when Cavan got a look at goal they were slow to take their chances. 6 wides in the first half saw them enter the break a point down.

Antrim stuck to their system in the second half, showing great discipline. In the third quarter they threatened to steal a goal that would leave Cavan with a lot of work to do. But, Ray Galligan came to Cavan’s rescue again.

Then, in the final stages Antrim finally ran out of steam. Cavan showed the benefit of having already played a Championship game and they finished strongly. After leaving it late twice now, Mickey Graham will be keen to get his team off the mark quickly in the semi-final.

Meanwhile, Down came up against a similarly stubborn Fermanagh team. Both teams adopted big defensive blocks in this fixture and the scoreline was evidence of this. Goals were never really on offer in the first half and long-range shooting proved beneficial. There was never more than one between the teams as Down went into the break 0-7 vs 0-6.

There was always a sense that one goal could open the game up. Caolan Mooney was the one to offer up such a chance. After a bursting run he left the Fermanagh defence stretched. As a result, Daniel McGuinness found space at the back post and palmed it into the empty net.

Fermanagh had no reply from there and Down’s forwards continued to tack on the scores. Barry O’Hagan scored 0-4 from play in an impressive display that will leave him full of confidence.

The experience of winter Championship aided Cavan in their last game. However, they now enter their fifth game in five weeks. With heavy ground under foot, fatigue may play a part, especially after going for more than 90 minutes against Monaghan.

Otherwise, Down are fresh and ready to take on Graham’s men. Their strong finish against Fermanagh was an excellent display of their firepower. At the same time, they showed great patience and discipline to break down a stout Fermanagh defence.

The game is live on BBC Northern Ireland.

Down are 4/6 favourites with Paddy Power. Cavan are the opposite at 6/4 and a draw is 15/2.

Prediction: Down. Cavan proved capable of providing an upset already and have been underestimated in Ulster before. But, five games in five weeks is a lot in these circumstances and Down may just have the extra legs coming down the stretch.

Facts and Figures

This will be their first Ulster championship meeting since 2007 when Down won a prelimi nary round tie by four points. They met in the All-Ireland qualifiers two years ago when  Cavan won by two points.

For the second year in a row, Cavan have caused upset in Ulster by beating Monaghan. After looking like they were down and out last Saturday, a late rally saw them earn extra-time. Then, it looked like penalties were on the cards until Cavan keeper Raymond Galligan won the game with a long-range free. On the other hand, Antrim last featured in an Ulster final in 2009. The straight-knock out format of this year’s Championship doesn’t work in their favour. Yet, it may give the Antrim players the freedom to challenge Cavan on Saturday evening.

Cavan re-writing the script

After a disappointing relegation from Division 2 recently, Cavan were big underdogs going into the Championship opener. But, the Breffni men showed why they were not to be written off just yet with an incredible never-say-die attitude.

Cavan started the brighter against Monaghan. After ten minutes, they had a four-point lead. Oisín Pierson’s goal pushed them out in front. However, Monaghan came back strongly and took a seven-point lead into the break.

In the second-half, Cavan used the wind advantage wisely and began to claw in the deficit. By the time the clock was up Cavan had drawn level thanks to a superbly taken equaliser by Gerard Smith.

In a nervy extra-time period, Monaghan edged in front before Martin Reilly found the net for Cavan. Then, the final few minutes was a demonstration of long-range free taking. It looked like Rory Beggan had sealed a penalty shoot-out with a free in added time. But, with the last kick of the game Raymond Galligan sent Cavan through with a free from 58m out.

Last year, Cavan went all the way to the Ulster final. Mickey Graham will be delighted with the fight his team showed last weekend and will be hoping they can reach the decider again.

Antrim claimed third spot in Division 4 this year. In fact, they could have earned promotion if not for a thrashing by Wicklow in the first game back from lockdown. Lenny Harbinson will be hoping the extended break his team has had will work in their favour. In winter conditions, Cavan’s 90 minute battle with Monaghan will have its effects. No doubt, Antrim will be the fresher of these two sides.

The winner of Cavan vs Antrim plays Fermanagh or Down a week later.

Paddy Power don’t see another upset on the cards. They have Cavan at 1/7 versus Antrim’s 11/2. A draw is 12/1.

The game is live on BBC Northern Ireland.

Prediction: Cavan.

Antrim: Michael Byrne; Patrick Gallagher, Declan Lynch, Kevin O\’Boyle; Peter Healy, James McAuley, Niall Delargy; Colm Duffin, Michael McCann; Kevin Quinn, Mark Sweeney, Dermot McAleese; Paddy Cunningham, Conor Murray, Patrick McBride. Subs: Oisin Kerr, Ruairi McCann, Odhran Eastwood, Paddy McCormack, Mark Gardiner, Eoin Nagle, Tomas McCann, Eunan Walsh, Kristian Healy, Marc Jordan, Ryan Murray, Adam Loughran.

Cavan’s superb win over Monaghan in the preliminary round last Saturday set them up for a first  Ulster championship clash with Antrim since 2009.

Monaghan vs Cavan is the opener for what is easily the most competitive of the Provincial Championships. Last year, the same fixture threw up an upset as Cavan prevailed. Now, following the relegation to Division 3, Cavan are underdogs again. But, Monaghan are not exactly carrying form into this game. Hence, it could be an exciting tie to kick off an exciting Championship.

In round 7 of the National League, a draw with Meath was enough to see Monaghan survive in the top Division. In what was an up-and-down League for the Farney men, they will be content as they head into knock-out football. The Meath draw was preceded by a loss to Kerry. But, Seamus McEnaney will have told his side that if they were to lose, that was the time to do so.

2019’s defeat to Cavan in the Ulster Championship will be at the front of McEnaney’s mind. The loss shook the team who went on to lose to Armagh in the qualifiers. Now, he will be relying on his talisman Conor McManus to lead from the front. Thankfully for McEnaney, McManus is finding form at the right time. He scored 1-08 against Meath and 0-05 the week before against Kerry in just 35 minutes.

Cavan need to show mental toughness

On the other hand, Cavan will be wishing they had another week to prepare for this fixture. Last year’s trip to the Ulster final seems like a long time ago now in light of their new Division 3 status. Two losses since the restart will need to be quickly forgotten about by Mickey Graham’s men.

Graham admitted his side “got what we deserved” after failing to get a result against Roscommon. In fact, a win on the day could have seen Cavan finish in the promotion spots. But, Division 2 was the tightest of the four and, true to form, the loss saw Cavan fall to 7th. Graham continued to confess nerves among his team before the game.

If Cavan are to replicate their victory from last season, they need to quickly make peace with their League result. In the Championship there will be no time to wallow in self-pity. In particular, the Ulster Championship will be a gruelling one on its own. Beginning in the preliminary round only adds to the challenge.

Paddy Power rightfully have Monaghan at 3/10 favourites. Cavan are 10/3 and a draw is 8/1. The game is live on Sky Sports.

Prediction: Monaghan.

Starting Teams

Monaghan: Rory Beegan, Kieran Duffy, Conor Boyle, Ryan Whylie, Dessie Ward, Fintan Kelly, Karl O’Connor, Darren Hughes, Kieran Hughes, Ryan McAnespie, Micheál Bannigan, Dermot Malone, Stephen O’Hanlon, Conor McCarthy, Conor McManus

Cavan: Raymond Galligan, Jason McLoughlin, Killian Clarke, Killian Brady, Gerard Smith, Ciaran Brady, Luke Fortune, James Smith, Padraig Faulkner, Martin Reilly, Gearoid McKernan, Oisin Kieran, Oisin Pierson, Chris Conway, Cormac O’Reilly

Ulster Football Championship Preliminary Round: Monaghan vs Cavan, Saturday, October 31st, 1.15pm (Clones).

Cavan vs Roscommon can effect both ends of the Division 2 table. Before the lockdown, the division was chaotic and condensed. Last weekend, little changed. Roscommon need just a point to be crowned champions. But, a loss could see them drop out of the top two altogether. Meanwhile, Cavan need a win to guarantee safety from relegation.

Roscommon returned to action against Armagh in a top-of-the-table clash on Saturday. However, they were the slower to start and were wasteful in front of the posts. Whereas, Armagh were accurate and took their chances. It took an Enda Smith penalty in the 34th penalty to give the Connacht side a lifeline.

Then on 43 minutes, Smith scored another penalty. Two minutes later, Conor Daly netted after a super Conor Cox run.

Then, Roscommon finished strongly. But, Anthony Cunningham will be keen to improve across the pitch before the Championship commences.

Roscommon need just a point to guarantee their return to Division 1 as table-toppers. If they have to continue to rely on goals though, Cavan could spoil their party. They have had a player contract covid-19 and some of the squad will not travel so team news will be vital.

The Ulster side will be left wondering how they could score 0-20 and lose a game by four points. In truth, they were unlucky to not a goal of their own when Martin Reilly’s effort was saved. Mickey Graham will be encouraged by the strength with which his team finished.

By injury time, they were within three points of Kildare. If they can show the same fight for 70 minutes against Roscommon they could take the points.

If Cavan win, Armagh lose, and Westmeath draw with Kildare, Graham’s team could squeeze into the top 2. In what has already been an unpredictable Division, anything is possible.

Team News

What adds to the excitement for this one is that neither management team has any apparent absentees for it.

However, Cavan play just a week later in the Ulster Championship. They play Monaghan and defeat would immediately end their season. Therefore, Graham has to decide whether to risk injuring his first fifteen or saving them and giving others some game time.

Meanwhile, Roscommon aren’t out in the Championship until November 8th. As a result, Anthony Cunningham may not be afraid to use his big guns to secure the title.

Prediction: Roscommon. After winning Connacht in 2019, the Rossies will be ambitious and want to get back to Division 1. Their eye for goal has won them games and could do so again. But, Cavan will push them for the 70 minutes and Anthony Cunningham will need to plan accordingly.

Cavan vs Roscommon: Division 2, Saturday, October 24th, 2pm (Kingspan Breffni Park).

With the return of the Allianz National League fast approaching, we look at the Kildare vs Cavan Division 2 fixture. Somewhat surprisingly, Kildare find themselves in a relegation battle with two games to save their Division 2 status. In contrast, a good finish for Cavan could see them secure a top-two finish.

Allianz Football Division 2 round 6
Kildare v Cavan, Newbridge, 2pmPreview and live score commentary

After finishing bottom of Division 1 in 2019, Cavan are looking to bounce straight back up. To date, wins over Westmeath, Fermanagh, and Laois projected them towards the promotion places. Despite being near the bottom, Kildare will be a tough opponent. But, a win here could make Cavan’s round 7 tie with Roscommon a promotion shoot-out.

In contrast, Kildare could only muster up wins over Laois and Fermanagh to sandwich their three losses. At the start of the year, the Lilywhites were one of the favourites for promotion. Therefore, they will have been able to regroup since the lockdown and can start afresh this time around. With promotion now all but impossible, Kildare will settle for staying in Division 2. Two home games is a welcome advantage.

Cavan face Monaghan in their Ulster Championship opener on October 31st. As a result, they will welcome two competitive League games as preparation. After going all the way to the Provincial Final in 2019, Cavan aim to go one better this time around.

Meanwhile, Kildare have a favourable draw in Leinster. They don’t play until the quarter-final stage on November 8th when Offaly or Carlow will be the opposition.

After two exciting club Championships in Cavan and Kildare respectively, the players will be itching for inter-county action. Hence, this is an exciting fixture to return with.

Allianz National League Division 2: Kildare vs Cavan, Sunday October 18th, 2pm (Newbridge).

Crosserlough and Kingscourt Stars had to do it all again at the weekend after a dramatic draw the week before. Heading in as favourites, Crosserlough were aiming to amend their 2018 final loss. Meanwhile, Kingscourt had proved previously that they were capable of winning the Cavan Football Final.

After needing two injury-time points to secure a replay last week, Crosserlough ensured there was no need for such heroics this time around. They came out of the blocks firing and established an early lead. In fact, they would hold this lead throughout despite a valiant effort from Kingscourt Stars.

There was less than twenty seconds on the clock when Crosserlough opened the scoring. James Smith fielded the throw-in and began a neat move that resulted in corner-back David Shalvey curling over the first point. Smith continued the game as he began. For example, he made a remarkable one-handed catch from a Brian Malocca kick-out before running deep into Kingscourt’s forty-five and putting it over the bar. Then, Stephen Smith added another for the ‘Lough who were 0-4 to 0-1 up after 11 minutes.

Kingscourt began to rally. Yet, the ‘Lough had an answer for everything. When man-of-the-match Smith scored again from midfield in the twenty-third minute, Crosserlough were 0-7 to 0-3 up. But, Kingscourt started to find gaps in their opponent’s defence as half-time drew closer. When John Oates scored for Kingscourt just before the interval, they had reeled in the deficit to two points. At the interval, it was 0-8 to 0-6 in Crosserlough’s favour.

A Cagey Affair

Last week’s drawn game was an end-to-end free-flowing festival of scores. In contrast, this was a more tense and nervous affair. After the restart, Crosserlough were the ones who again showed more decisiveness. The third quarter proved to be crucial. Consecutive points from Patrick Lynch, Shalvey, and Stephen Smith paved the way to the title. Kingscourt goalie James Farrelly denied Stephen Smith twice in the game but could do nothing about the missed chances at the other end of the pitch. By the time of the second water-break, it was 0-12 to 0-7.

A free from Barry Reilly with ten minutes remaining made it a four-point game. But, defence prevailed from then on. When Lynch scored again for the ‘Lough deep in injury time it was the icing on the cake.

The young Crosserlough side were deserving winners on the day. Furthermore, they proved the absence of county-star Dara McVeety didn’t hinder them. After 48 years of waiting, they finally conquered a Cavan Football Final again.

Final score: Crosserlough 0-13 vs Kingscourt Stars 0-8.

Scorers for Crosserlough: Patrick Lynch 0-5 (2f, 1m, 45), James Smith 0-3, Stephen Smith 0-2, David Shalvey 0-2, Mark Stuart 0-1,

Crosserlough’s 48 year wait for the Oliver Plunkett Cup was extended for another week when Mark Stuart kicked the equaliser against Kingscourt with the last play of the game. It seemed set that Kingscourt Stars were about to win their first Cavan Football final since 2015 but Crosserlough were relentless in their pursuit.

Crosserlough were the ones who started the stronger. They dominated the game in the opening quarter. But, three wides meant Kingscourt were always in touch. Then, Adrian Smith found the net to open a seven-point lead.

But Padraig Faulkner came up with a goal for Kingscourt in the 29th minute to keep the difference at three heading half-time.

Unfortunately, Kingscourt were again the slower to start in the second period. Defender Cian Boylon popped up with another green flag to extend the gap to six again. But, that’s when Kingscourt started to make up for lost time.

Points from Barry Reilly, Patrick Lynch, Cian Shekleton, Philip Tinnelly and Peter Corrigan reeled in the difference. Next, Kevin Curtis fisted into the net. All of a sudden, Kingscourt were two up with eight minutes remaining.

In those remaining minutes, it was point for point and the gap was still two heading into injury time. David Shalvey curled one over to make it a one-point game. Shekleton then missed a chance for Kingscourt that would have sealed the game. This allowed Crosserlough one last throw of the dice. Amazingly, they held their nerve and Mark Stuart latched onto a James Smith pass and casually kicked it over to secure a draw.

After losing the 2018 final, Crosserlough will take last weekend’s draw as a let off. They’ll be keen to make sure it won’t take last gasp heroics in the replay. After waiting since 1972 for a Championship victory, Crosserlough are due a title. Meanwhile, Kingscourt will be encouraged by their performance. If they can replicate the same determination in the replay, Kingscourt have every chance of being the kings of Cavan football again.

Paddy Power have priced Crosserlough at 5/6. On the other hand, Kingscourt are shorter than the first game at 5/4. A draw is 13/2. The replay is live on Cavstream.
