This match will throw in at 16:30 in the LIT Gaelic Grounds, Limerick. The match will also be televised by Sky Sports for anyone without a ticket.

Clare was relegated to the qualifiers after a contentious game against Tipperary in the Munster championship. The Banner since beat Wexford by three points last weekend.

Other than the obvious choice of Tony Kelly, young corner forward Mark Rodgers was a bright spark when he came on in the last two games. Hopefully he can improve on those performances against Cork.

On the other hand, Cork were one of many teams to be taught a lesson by reigning champions, Limerick in Munster. Cork did not play badly in the game but could not match Limerick’s quality across the field.

Corner forward, Shane Kingston managed to score 1-01 in that loss so he will be a major part of Cork’s attack in the remainder of the championship.

These two nearby counties last faced each other in the league in May. Cork won that game in a close 0-22 to 1-18, expect this game to also go down to the wire.

Predicted Starting 15

Clare

E. Quilligan; R. Hayes, C. Cleary, P. Flanagan; D. Ryan, J. Conlon, P. Fitzpatrick; C. Galvin, C. Malone; A. McCarthy, D. Reidy, R. Taylor; A. Shanagher, T. Kelly, M. Rodgers.

Cork

P. Collins; S. O’Donoghue, D. Cahalane, N. O’Leary; E. Cadogan, M. Coleman, T. O’Mahony; D. Fitzgibbon, G. Millerick; C. Cahalane, S. Harnedy, R. O’Flynn; S. Kingston, P. Horgan, J. O’Connor.

Betting

Cork is the bookmakers’ favourites to win with odds of 5/6.

A draw has odds of 9/1.

Clare are very narrowly underdogs with odds of 6/5 to win.

Score Prediction

Either way this game goes, it is going to be a very close affair. Both teams seem evenly matched in every position.

But Clare have fuelled themselves with confidence after beating Wexford and this may spur them on to victory. Expect them to beat Cork by less than three points.

The GAA.ie Hurling Team of the Week has been announced with Limerick GAA earning four selections – the most in the side.

Kyle Hayes is in at left half-back after his stunning goal at Páirc Uí Chaoimh in the 2021 Munster Senior Hurling Championship final.

The Kildimo-Pallaskenry player started his run from the halfway line and finished off an electrifying move by firing the ball past Barry Hogan into the Tipperary net.

Cian Lynch joins him in the side, taking his place as the right-sided midfielder.

His performance on Sunday against Tipperary was fantastic and he composed the Limerick orchestra perfectly, leading the side’s second-half revival to secure a dominant win over their Munster rivals.

Dan McCormack did well against Lynch at times but could not contain the Limerick talisman who earned the Man of the Match in the Munster final.

Peter Casey and Seamus Flanagan are the other two Limerick GAA players that make the XV.

The pair were firing on all cylinders and were lethal when they got a hold of the sliotar.

Peter Casey tallied up five points for his side while Seamus Flanagan got three and nabbed a goal too, pouncing on a loose ball after Hogan denied Limerick’s Aaron Gillane.

Leinster Champions Kilkenny and Brian Lohan’s Clare have two players on the side each after their wins at the weekend.

Wexford GAA also have two players in the side following their All-Ireland exit at the hands of Clare.

Dublin, Waterford, Laois, Tipperary and Westmeath all have one player on the side.

GAA.ie Hurling Team Of The Week

Alan Nolan (Dublin); Rory Hayes (Clare), Huw Lawlor (Kilkenny), Shane Reck (Wexford); Calum Lyons (Waterford), James Maher (Kilkenny), Kyle Hayes (Limerick); Cian Lynch (Limerick), Paddy Purcell (Laois); Ryan Taylor (Clare), Jason Forde (Tipperary), Robbie Greville (Westmeath); Peter Casey (Limerick), Seamus Flanagan (Limerick), Cathal Dunbar (Wexford).

Round Two of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Qualifiers will see Clare take on Cork and Waterford play Galway on Saturday, July 24th.

Following the hurling action at the weekend, the draw was made, which saw Kilkenny and Limerick win the Leinster and Munster provincial titles respectively.

All sides involved in the draw were knocked out of their provincial championships at the quarter-final and semi-final stages.

The draw took place on RTÉ Radio 1’s Morning Ireland.

Two of the sides were in action at the weekend in the first round of the qualifiers, with Cork and Galway starting their journey through the backdoor in round two after losses to eventual Munster champions Limerick and Dublin – the pair were awarded a bye for round one.

Brian Lohan’s Clare progressed to the second round after beating Wexford in a match-up against rival Bainisteoir Davy Fitzgerald at Semple Stadium.

Clare’s squad showed their worth and the Banner had another game in recent history that did not showcase an overreliance on the Championship’s top scorer Tony Kelly.

Cathal Malone, David Reidy, Ryan Taylor and Aidan McCarthy all chipped in with scores throughout the game and Clare’s bench also provided 1-02 for the side.

They will face a Cork side who have been inconsistent in 2021, and with five wins from their last six games, Brian Lohan’s men will be confident of progression.

Waterford earned a date with Galway and a repeat of the 2017 All-Ireland final after a five-point win over preliminary round winners Laois.

Waterford’s fortunes have been up-and-down this season with Liam Cahill and his players struggling to get the side back into the vein of form that saw them reach the All-Ireland final last year.

Galway will play their first game after a shock loss to Mattie Kenny’s Dublin hurlers and will want to bounce back from their defeat.

The Déise will have to be on their A-game to earn a date in the All-Ireland quarter-finals with either Dublin or Tipperary.

    PREVIEW

Clare and Wexford will go head to head in Round 1 of the All-Ireland Championship Qualifiers at Semple Stadium in Thurles this coming Saturday at 1:30 pm as part of a double bill with Armagh v Monaghan live on Sky Sports Arena.

Both teams competed with one another in Divison 1 Group B of the Allianz League earlier this year. With Wexford finishing above Clare in 2nd position, a point ahead of their rivals.

When they did meet, Wexford came out with the spoils at Cusack Park in Ennis. Winning by a single point in a close encounter with a scoreline of 1-21 to 2-19.

League games do not really matter when it comes to championship form, but how close their first encounter was with one another, this game should be another hard one to call.

Wexford is coming into this game after losing to Leinster finalist’s Kilkenny after an extra-time classic with a scoreline of 2-37 to 2-29.

Their opponents also fell short in their Munster semi-final tie against Tipperary losing by 4 points.

This will be a repeat of Round 2 of the Qualifiers in last years championship. Clare came out with the victory, with a 7 point winning margin.

Conclusion

Easily one of the hardest games to call this season so far, both teams have a strong case in who is the better team.

It could come down to who will perform on the day, a bad referee decision or whoever’s management team nails their tactics.

All in all, I will have to favour Wexford in this game, they have already shown they can beat Clare, and with Davy Fitzgerald pushing for All-Ireland glory, he will be eager to defeat his former team with a strong showing here.

Prediction: Wexford by 2 points

Kerry v Clare – Fitzgerald Stadium – 7:00 pm – Sky Sports

Kerry will host Clare in Killarney in the second of two Munster Quarter-Finals to be played on Saturday afternoon.

The Kingdom come into this game having just won the league alongside Dublin due to commitments with this game.

The Kingdom were by far the standout performers of the Allianz League. Sweeping aside Galway and Tyrone in ruthless fashion and drawing against All-Ireland champions Dublin to share the spoils.

David Clifford has been as clinical as ever, the young star is well on his way to becoming a Kerry great, and at such a young age he will hope to replicate the like of Colm Cooper and Kieran Donaghy on the push for All-Ireland glory.

Clare will be looking to bounce back in stunning fashion after narrowly losing to Mayo in a promotion play-off. Staging a comeback but just missing out after a slow first-half performance against the westerners.

Colm Collins will hope he can guide his side further than last years campaign, losing to eventual champions Tipperary at the same stage will be running through their minds. They just have to face an outstanding Kerry side this time around.

Players to watch

Kerry: David Clifford (Fossa)

Clare: David Tubridy (Doonbeg)

Since their defeat to Limerick in the Championship opener, Clare have gone from strength to strength. A tight contest with Laois was followed up by a win over Wexford last weekend. On the other hand, Waterford found themselves in a Munster Final last Sunday but fell short of toppling Limerick. That leaves them with one game less under their belt than Clare ahead of this weekend’s quarter-final.

Click for live score commentary

Firstly, Waterford’s win over Cork was a fantastic one for the county. However, Limerick proved to be too much of a challenge in the Munster Final. In what can be described as the most combative game in the Championship thus far, Waterford were ferocious in their attempt to dethrone Limerick as kings of Munster.

The middle third was the decisive battleground for much of this tie. Waterford opted to go toe-to-toe with Limerick’s physicality. In fact, they achieved that for much of the game and even came out on top on many occasions. At half-time, it was 0-14 to 0-11 to the holders and there was a sense that they would push on in the second-half. But, the opposite unfolded. With 20 minutes left, Waterford had a one-point lead. That’s when Limerick’s squad strength proved to be crucial. They just had more to offer than Waterford in the closing stages and took a four-point win.

In spite of this, Waterford will be encouraged by their performance. Limerick are the strongest team in the country on form and they gave them a massive run. Liam Cahill will be itching for another go at John Kiely’s team.

Meanwhile, Clare emerged from the qualifiers with an impressive win against Wexford. 2013 Player of the Year Tony Kelly again lorded things on his way to a personal 1-15 tally. 10 of those came in the first-half as the Banner men stormed to a 0-13 to 0-3 lead.

The second-half didn’t prove to be as bountiful for them. But, Wexford never came close to threatening the early lead Clare established. When Kelly scored a smashing goal in the 52nd minute, it effectively ended the tie as a contest and Brian Lohan has successfully steered his team to the quarter-finals.

Clare have to prevail in a much tougher contest this weekend if they are to reach the semi-finals.

The quarter-final is live on Sky Sports Mix.

Paddy Power are backing Waterford. They’re 1/2 versus Clare’s 15/8. A draw is 9/1.

Prediction: Waterford. My heart says Clare but my head says Waterford. The Munster runners-up were impressive against Limerick and from numbers 1-15 they may just pack more of a punch.

Unlike the football Championship, there is a second chance for teams in the Hurling Championship through qualifiers. Having both lost their opening games, Clare and Wexford find themselves in round 2 of these qualifiers but a win here will see them in a quarter-final.

Firstly, Clare lost in Munster to a strong Limerick side. Then, they saw of a competitive Laois in their first qualifier.

On the other hand, Wexford had their first outing against Galway on Halloween night. That was a horror show for Davy Fitzgerald’s side who were well beaten by a rejuvenated Galway team. Now, last year’s Leinster Champions are in a fight to stay in the competition.

Tony Kelly was on fire for Clare last weekend. He hit 0-13 as the Banner county progressed past Laois. Clare were very much on top in the first half. Despite losing David McInerney to a red card before half-time, they had a 7 point lead at the interval.

Being a man short didn’t hinder Clare in the third quarter. By the 55th minute, they still had their 7 point lead. However, that’s when Laois got on top. The Leinster team outscored Clare 1-6 to 0-3 in the final minutes. But, Clare held on to advance. If they are to reach the quarter-final, Brian Lohan’s side need to perform for the full 70 minutes on Saturday.

On the other hand, Wexford were disappointing in their only Championship outing so far. Galway were the opposition for last year’s All-Ireland semi-finalists. But, Davy Fitzgerald’s side looked out of practice on a wide-open Croke Park. Their usual slick hand-passing game and direct running was strictly managed by the Connacht side.

As a result, Wexford fell to a 13 point loss. Fitzgerald will be glad for having last weekend off to work on his game plan. A rude awakening could prove to be exactly what his team needed. It is no secret that Wexford can match anyone on their day. But, there is no more room for error. So, if Wexford are to challenge for an All-Ireland they need to quickly find their rhythm.

Wexford are favourites for this despite their previous loss. Paddy Power price them at 8/13. Meanwhile, Clare are 13/8 and a draw is 8/1.

The game is live on GAAGo.

Team news

Prediction: Wexford. Davy Fitzgerald knows how to get the best out of his team and with their backs against the wall now is the time to do so. On the other hand, Clare just got over the line against Laois despite playing well.

Unlike the football Championship, the Hurling Championship is giving teams a second chance this year. The first qualifying round takes place on Saturday. First up, Laois and Clare do battle to stay in the competition.

Laois lost out to Dublin in their opener by fourteen points, failing to replicate last year’s upset. But, this was the stage of the competition where they came alive in 2019.

Laois were hit hard with absences for the Dublin game but there were silver linings among the wreckage. For example, Eamonn Dillon hit 1-1 off the bench to put his hand up for selection on Saturday. Likewise, Ronan Broderick, Fiachra Fennell and James Keyes made debuts to make up for the absentees such as Matthew Whelan, Joe Phelan, John Lennon, Eanna Lyons and Cha Dwyer.

The midlands county had a decent second half against Dublin. However, the concession of 1-17 in the first 35 minutes meant the damage was done. Furthermore, there was evidence of tired legs on the open Croke Park field in the final ten minutes. Hopefully this was just a result of a seven-month interval.

On the other hand, Clare fell to Limerick by ten points in the Munster Championship quarter-final. At half-time they were very much deadlocked with 2013 Player of the Year Tony Kelly leading them out.

But, it was Limerick who came out firing in the second half and soon Clare found themselves at a deficit they couldn’t overturn, despite Kelly’s heroics.

Clare are very much favourites to continue in the competition. Paddy Power have priced the Banner men at 1/20 versus Laois’ 8/1. Meanwhile, a draw is 20/1.

The winner will take on Wexford the following week after their loss to Galway last weekend.

The game is live on GAAGo.

A Munster semi-final awaits the winner of Tipperary vs Clare this Sunday. These two teams went through their respective League campaigns without making any headlines and remaining in their respective divisions. But, Championship football can throw up surprises. This year, the knock-out format means there is no room for error so games will be nervy and anything can happen.

Clare’s win over Fermanagh in the first game back proved to be enough to save them in Division 2. Last weekend, they lost to Armagh but remained above the dropzone. There were some good spells against Armagh that Colm Collins will be very encouraged by. However, it will take a good performance for the full 70 minutes to advance in the Championship.

In Division 3, Tipperary secured their survival by beating Leitrim in round 7. A goal in each half went a long way to their success. Liam Casey’s strike five minutes from time put the game beyond Leitrim. But, the Connacht side fought for the full game. As a result, Tipperary are well prepared heading into the Championship.

Last season, Tipperary lost two in a row in the Championship. Now, it will only take one game to end their season. Hence, there is no room for error. In contrast, Clare bounced back from their defeat to Kerry in the Munster semi-final by going all the way to the fourth round of the qualifiers. There, just a point stopped them from going to the Super 8s.

Paddy Power have gone with Tipperary as the 8/11 favourites. Clare are 11/8 and a draw is 15/2.

GAA GO are live streaming the game.

Prediction: Clare.

There are two prizes on offer for the winner of Limerick vs Clare on Sunday. Firstly, the victor will advance to the Munster semi-final against Tipperary the following week. Secondly, the winner will also be crowned League Champions. After finishing top of Group A and B in Division 1 respectively, Limerick and Clare’s Championship decider has conveniently doubled up as the League decider.

Limerick manager John Kiely admitted to not giving much thought to the fixture’s status as a double-header. It is clear that the Championship is the priority for Limerick. In 2019, they fell at the semi-final stage of the Championship to Kilkenny.

Now, Kiely’s team are out to go one better and claim their second Championship in three years. Their League form earlier in the year was certainly cause for optimism.

On the other hand, Clare’s U20 defeat to Tipperary last Monday night has freed up a number of players who Brian Lohan can call upon. However, Aidan McCarthy remains out with a broken thumb.

Earlier in the year, Clare went unbeaten in the League. A draw on the road against Kilkenny was particularly promising. After getting knocked out of the Championship early last year, the Banner county are out with a point to prove.

The game is live on RTÉ 2 on Sunday.

The winner plays Tipperary a week later. Whereas, the loser enter into the All-Ireland SHC Qualifiers on November 7/8.

Prediction

Limerick. Despite the absence of a crowd, the home advantage is still a welcome one. Furthermore, Limerick will be aiming to go all the way this year and laying down a marker in their first game is a target. But, Clare are more than able to challenge and will be a good test for the 2018 Champions.
