Donegal still have a chance of reaching the league finals but they will need to win their final two games and hope results go their way for this to happen. Declan Bonner’s side sit in 5th place in the table on 5 points. They have won 2 games, lost two games and drawn one. Their most recent game ended in a 2-12 to 0-08 win over Monaghan. Players like Michael Murphy, Paddy McBrearty, Neil McGee and Ryan McHugh will be key.

Tyrone come into this game third place in the league. They have a big chance of reaching the final. A win here coupled with a win over Mayo could see them into the final depending on other results. They have played five games, winning three games. The most recent game was a good win over Dublin 1-10 to 1-07 in Omagh. However, that game shouldn’t have went ahead. Mickey Harte will look to players like Peter Harte, Darren McCurry and Tiernan McCann.

Betting

Donegal are favourites to win this game at odds of 8/13. Tyrone are 13/8 to win. Home advantage counts for a lot in these games so I give Donegal the edge to come out on top. They have a good record in Ballybofey also. Michael Murphy to score the first goal at 8/1 looks a fantastic bet. No live coverage of Donegal v Tyrone so be sure to check out of live score updates.

Westmeath have relegated Carlow Division 2 for 2021 after a 1-17 to 2-08 win over Carlow at TEG Cusack Park.

Carlow aided with the wind in the opening didn’t play well. They in fact were seven points at the break. Westmeath showed they wanted to win it more, winning the important challenges, coming out of the ball when they shouldn’t have and landing some superb scores. Killian Doyle had the home side three points ahead early on, but Carlow responded through scores from Marty Kavanagh, Jack Kavanagh and Diarmuid Byrne. The game now level.

Doyle knocked over another score to give Westmeath the advantage once again. Doyle then found the back of the Carlow net beating Damien Jordan to give the Lake County a four point lead. Colm Bonnar’s side then tagged on a free from Marty Kavanagh, Westmeath though finished strongly with the next four scores. 1-08 to 0-04 at the break.

Chris Nolan registered the first two scores of the second half to cut the gap to five. Once again though Westmeath knocked over four points, the gap now out to nine. Killian Doyle absolutely superb for Shane O’Brien. The game appeared to be all over when Doyle put ten points between the sides. However, Carlow grabbed two goals in quick succession. Marty Kavanagh finishing a penalty on 60 minutes, while Diarmuid Byrne flicked the ball to the net on 64 minutes after Aonghus Clarke was caught in possession. Killian Doyle registered a sideline cut and he would knock over his 14th point of the game from a free to seal a 6 point win for Westmeath. Tyrone battled to a 1-10 to 1-07 win over Dublin in Omagh on Saturday. In truth the game should have been called off due to the horrendous conditions. But Mickey Harte will be delighted with the win.

Dublin made the perfect start to this game. Colm Basquel sauntered through with a super run through before unleashing an unstoppable effort to the top right corner of Niall Morgan’s goal. However, Mickey Harte’s men settled with scores from Conor Meyler and Rory Brennan. Brian Fenton knocked over a nice score, but it was Dublin only point from play in the opening half.

Liam Rafferty got on the scoreboard after McCurry assisted him. However, the game would be all tied up when Morgan knocked over a long range free from 50 metres with the wind. Dean Rock knocked over a 20 metre free, but Peter Harte knocked over a super score on 33 minutes. Tyrone could have had a goal when Rafferty hit the crossbar. The score at the break 0-5 to 1-02. There was some unsavoury scenes in the tunnel with both sides engaging in a scuffle which didn’t look great from first viewing.

Padraig Hampsey was given a black card when action resumed for his involvement in the tunnel incident. I suspect we will be hearing more about it. Peter Harte would kick the first score of the half. Dublin through Cillian O’Shea and Niall Scully pointed, before Dean Scully knocked over a free. McCurry kicked his first accurate free of the night, Morgan followed that up with another free to leave it 1-05 to 0-08. Niall Scully was then sent to the sin bin after tangling with his marker, Edendork man Morgan took the resulting free and split the posts as Tyrone led for the first time after 58 minutes. Jack McCaffrey was introduced by Dessie Farrell and he was fouled to allow Rock to level matters.

Morgan kick his fourth free of the game to edge the hosts back in front. But Dean Rock kicked a 66th minute effort between the posts. The score now was 0-10 to 1-07. Tyrone got the final score of the game despite Dublin pushing for the goal with Paul Mannion. Tyrone held on for what was a crucial win in Omagh

Mickey Harte’s Tyrone come into this game on the back of a poor performance against Galway last weeked. However, they were completely outplayed and hammered 2-25 to 0-12 by Padraig Joyces side. They could find themselves in a relegation battle if they lose this game against Dublin here as well. Tyrone have won 2 games and lost 2 games in the division so far. They have beaten Kerry and Meath. Mickey Harte will look to players like Darren McCurry, Tiernan McCann and Niall Sludden. They will be without talisman Cathal McShane who is facing up to five months out with an ankle injury.

Dublin sit in second place in the league table at present. They come into the game unbeaten. They have 2 wins and 2 draws. What I have certainly witnessed is Dublin play to the end, they never know when they are beaten. This is a sign of good champions. They had to make comebacks against Monaghan and Donegal but they always found a way. They have experience players now like Brian Fenton, Ciaran Kilkenny and Paul Mannion. These will be key players in the Dublin attack once again. Dessie Farrell speaking after the win over Donegal said the slow start to games needs to be addressed he said to RTE Sport, “We had a poor start again tonight and that something we’ll definitely be looking at. We will look at it during the week and have a discussion about it. Over the longer term it needs to be addressed.”

Dublin 1-15 Donegal 1-14

Dublin proved yet again while they are All-Ireland Champions as a 65 minute goal from Paul Mannion was key in beating Donegal at Croke Park on Saturday.

The Dubs were in fact 5 points behind in the opening and clawed back the win. This is the second week in a row Dessie Farrell’s side came back from a losing position, having been down 10 points at one stage against Monaghan. Donegal led by 1-05 to 0-02 after 20 minutes and were much better in the opening quarter. Ciaran Thompson opened the scoring, before Odhran McFadden powered through for an 8 minute goal to make it 1-01 to 0-00. Jamie Brennan and Michael Murphy then knocked over two points each. Dublin did improve before the break Sean Bugler and Ciaran Kilkenny coming to the fore. Brian Howard, Bugler, Rock and Kilkenny all pointing to leave it 1-06 to 0-07 at the break.

Dublin weren’t going to be denied in this game. However it was Donegal through Thompson and Mogan who doubled their lead to four points. Dean Rock, Cormac Costello and Howard all pointing in response. Man of the match Michael Murphy replied for Donegal. Mogan and Rock traded scores, before McBrearty making his first start of the year came on. Michael Murphy point from play meant a goal still separated the sides. Brian Fenton kicked over a brace of points, before Comerford was called into action to keep out a rasping shot from McBrearty. Colm Basquel had the sides level 0-14 to 1-11 after 60 minutes.

Mannion then netted on 65 minutes. A long delivery in from the Hoganstand side was no dealt with by goalkeeper Shaun Patton which allowed Mannion to palm the ball into the net. Murphy instantly replied with a free. Davy Byrne knocked a point over but McFadden and McBrearty left a single point in with five to go. John Small and Michael Murphy were both sent off on second yellow cards by Maurice Deegan. However, it was Dublin who get another win but it was another close game.

Preview

Donegal remain unbeaten in Division 1 after recording a draw with Mayo in their opening game before beating Meath in Navan on Sunday 3-08 to 0-07. Michael Murphy impressed me in that game as did Odhran McFadden Ferry. Speaking after the win manager Declan Bonner said, “I thought the way we moved the ball for those goals was top class, and yes we should probably have had two more (Michael Murphy missed a first half penalty). But no time to rest on that, not with the challenge of Galway coming to Letterkenny next Sunday”. Patrick McBrearty could return to the side, while Michael Murphy, Ryan McHugh and Odhran McFadden will be key once again.

Galway come into the game on the back of a narrow loss to Kerry on Saturday night. The Westerners sticking with the Kingdom right up till injury time only to lose out by 1-15 to 2-11. Joyce will look to Shane Walsh who once again impressed, while there were terrific performances from Eamonn Brannigan who scored 0-03 against Kerry.

Betting

Donegal are 4/7 to win this game, while Galway are 7/4. Donegal are strong at home and I think they will win by 2 or 3 points here.
