Tuesday fought tenaciously to hold off the fast finishing favourite Emily Upjohn to win the 2022 Cazoon Oaks at Epsom.

The win was a 10th success in the race for trainer Aidan O’Brien, with the daughter of Galileo being ridden by Ryan Moore.

Tuesday, who is three-years-old today, is out of Lilly Langtry, making her a full sister to Minding, the top-rated filly of 2016 worldwide.

Emily Upjohn, the runner-up by a short-head under Frankie Dettori, was unlucky in the Epsom Classic, as she stumbled exiting the starting stalls, meaning she was last after a furlong.

The John and Thady Gosden-trained filly made progress throughout the 1 m 4 furlong contest, but Tuesday had first run on the her in the home straight, and would not be denied at the line.

The Cazoo Oaks victory for Aidan O’Brien was a record 41st British Classic success for the Ballydoyle handler, surpassing the John Scott, who trained between 1827 and 1863.

English handler John Gosden has stated his Cazoo Oaks favourite this afternoon Emily Upjohn may be in the same league as his first winner in the race, Taghrooda.

The unbeaten Sea The Stars filly following up victory on her only start as a two year old with wins at Sandown Park in April and in the Tattersalls Musidora Stakes at York last month.

Gosden, whose training license is with his son Thady, has three Oaks winners to his name – Taghrooda in 2014, Enable in 2017 and Anapurna in 2019.

Asked to compare Emily Upjohn to his three previous winners, Gosden said:

“I think she is in the Taghrooda league. It would be silly to start talking about Enable as that would be completely over the top.

“It is her ability to travel and quicken over a trip that reminds me of Taghrooda. She is a big girl and she was immature and wasn’t ready to run until later in the year.”

Explaining his reasons for bringing Emily Upjohn to Epsom Downs to experience the unique track for the recent Cazoo Derby Gallops Morning, Gosden stated:

“Frankie (Dettori, jockey) felt that for a filly who has had three races in her life it would be nice to come here and just have a look and feel of the track, which is all that you are doing as you are not trying to do any exploratory work.

“She behaved great, moved very well, got her leads right coming down the hill and quickened up nicely. I think she will come on a lot for that mentally. She is not a filly who raced a lot at two as she only had the one run at Wolverhampton, but you can see by the size of the frame of her why we were patient.

“She has filled out well and she has rather enjoyed her morning out here. I would hope she has got the speed for the Oaks as she has shown an ability to quicken. The other day in the Musidora she quickened well there at York.

“She did it well at Wolverhampton and at Sandown she sat very handy, then lengthened off the front. She has a change of gear.”

Frankie Dettori rode a 150.25/1 treble on the final day at Royal Ascot, with his wins including the Group 1 Coronation Stakes on Jessica Harrington’s Alpha Star.

The Italian also partnered Palace Pier (4/1) to victory in the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes this afternoon and anyone using promotion for bet365 could have got 6/1 in the morning, Dettori was riding for trainer John Gosden and owner Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum.

The three-year-old Kingman colt, who is now unbeaten in four starts, got the better of both Pinatubo (11/8f) and Wichita (9/4) in a thrilling finish to the Group 1 contest.

The trio battled each other inside the final furlong before Palace Pier lengthened well to win by a length from European Champion 2-year-old of last season, Pinatubo, with Qipco 2000 Guineas runner-up Wichita another head back in third.

For Dettori, the win was his sixth of the week and his 73rd Royal Ascot victory in total.

“What a day!” exclaimed Dettori, “We always thought a lot of Palace Pier, but he got a bit sleepy on us in the mornings and we were scratching our heads. John [Gosden] did a great job, and he thought, let’s start him off in a handicap at Newcastle to see whether he would wake up, and he did. We threw him in at the deep end today, but in the back of our minds we knew that there was a good horse in that big body, and we just were not sure how much of a good horse he was. Today was no fluke.”

Hello Youmzain (4/1) landed the second Group 1 sprint of his career when taking the Diamond Jubilee Stakes, a race in which Denis Hogan’s Sceptical started as 2/1f.

The winning four-year-old Kodiac colt gave jockey Kevin Stott a first Royal Ascot win and trainer Kevin Ryan his sixth. Hello Youmzain broke quickly from the stalls and took the 10-strong field along, before being headed by Ireland’s leading sprinter, Sceptical, entering the final furlong. Just when it looked as though Hogan’s filly, who cost only £2,800 at a Godolphin dispersal of horse stock sale, was about to claim a victory at the highest level, Hello Youmzain rallied to regain the lead. He held off the late challenge of Dream Of Dreams (8/1) by a head, with Sceptical a neck further back.

US trainer Wesley Ward sent out his 11th Royal Ascot winner when the Irish-bred Campanelle (9/2), in the colours a former winner of the race, Lady Aurelia, took the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes under Frankie Dettori.

The daughter of Kodiac, who sired three Group winners on the day, came out on top by three-quarters of a length from Sacred (5/1) after a sustained battle in the closing stages, with David Loughnane’s 100/1 shot Caroline Dale in third.

The win was a fourth Queen Mary Stakes for Ward following Jealous Again (2009), Acapulco (2015) and Lady Aurelia (2016).

Nando Parrado caused a big shock when becoming the longest priced winner in the modern era at Royal Ascot, defying odds of 150/1 to take the Group 2 Coventry Stakes.

The two-year-old Kodiac colt had finished fifth on debut at Newmarket and was always in a prominent position today under jockey Adam Kieby. Nando Parrado took the lead just inside the final two furlongs and saw off all challengers to score by a length from Qaader (3/1). The Aidan O’Brien-trained favourite, Admiral Nelson, could only finish in eight place.

The Jessica Harrington-trained Alpine Star (9/2) emulated her half-sister Alpha Centauri (the winner in 2018) when storming to victory in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes on the final day of Royal Ascot 2020.

The three-year-old Sea The Moon filly was the only Irish-trained winner on Saturday, meaning Ireland-based trainers had one winner each day of the meeting.

Owned by the Niarchos Family, Alpine Star, who was making her first start of 2020, responded well to Frankie Dettori and took up the running entering the final furlong. The filly stayed on strongly for a four and a quarter length victory over the American challenger Sharing (16/5), with Roger Charlton’s 2/1f Quadrilateral a further length and three-quarters back in third.

Winning trainer Jessica Harrington, who was unable to attend Royal Ascot his year, said of today’s win:

“It is absolutely amazing because I am sitting here (at home), I can’t go racing, and watching it on the telly is very hard. I could not believe it because she was the only horse in the field that hadn’t had a run this year, but she is amazing. She is a half-sister to a complete superstar, Alpha Centauri, who gave me my first Royal Ascot winner. She was just amazing today, she did it so easy.”

The Co. Kildare-based handler continued:

“She is very laidback and nothing like Alpha Centauri, who was a great big, very imposing filly. This filly is not very big, she is not a great colour – a little bit of a mealy chestnut. If you saw her trotting around in the string, you wouldn’t pick her out, but she has the most wonderful attitude. Frankie was probably squeezing her along before she turned in but every time you give her a squeeze, she will come for you.”

Jessica Harrington was represented at Royal Ascot by her son-in-law Richie Galway who said:

“Alpine Star is a straightforward filly. Jessie sends anything that she runs at Ascot to stay with her great pal Nicky Henderson in Lambourn, he has been hugely helpful and he is going to claim credit for this! They have a fairly tried and tested routine, and the filly is straightforward – she’s very relaxed, very easy to handle, travels very well, so from that point of view the only logistical issue is that unfortunately Jessie, Emma, Kate and the Niarchos family – and Shane; Frankie Dettori, what a sub to have, and amazing that he hasn’t won a Coronation Stakes before, brilliant to get him – but the amount of work that Shane Foley has done on the filly at home has made today possible.”

The victory was jockey Frankie Dettori’s first success in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes, meaning he has now won every Group 1 race run at Royal Ascot, and incredibly only needs to win Newmarket’s July Cup to have won every British Group 1 race.

The winning rider said of Alpha Star:

“I really fancied Alpine Star. I didn’t want to jinx it, so I kept quiet. I kept it quiet and knew she was an exciting ride. Everything went to plan in the race. I had a decent draw. I hit a flat spot and I got the split on the fence and then the rest was history. She will definitely get the mile and a quarter, she did all her best work at the end, the mile and a half? I really don’t know, I will leave to Maria Niarchos and Jessie to talk about.”

2.25pm Coronation Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series)

1 Alpine Star Jessica Harrington 3-9-00 Frankie Dettori 9/2

There was a massive shock at Royal Ascot on Saturday as Nando Parrado won the Coventry Stakes at odds of 150/1.

Nando wasn’t given a chance in the race which had some big hitters in it including Admiral Nelson for Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore and Qaader for Jim Crowley and Mark Johnston. However, it was Clive Cox’s horse ridden by Adam Kirby that stormed home to win by a length ahead of the aforementioned Qaader. In third place Saeqia for Martin Dwyer and John Gosden.

Nando Parrado was beaten on debut at Newmarket finishing way back in fifth but showed plenty of improvement. Clive Cox was overjoyed with the win he told Racing TV, “I was just saying it is not a shock – the price was a shock. He is a proper horse and we loved him from the start”. Mr Cox continued, “It was always the plan to come here, it was just a sideways step on his first run. He came home and thrived from there”. He continued,

” he knew the rain earlier this week helped his horse, he said,”When the rain came earlier in the week, I knew he would be better on good or slower ground than quicker ground”

Chiefofchiefs won the opener for Charlie Fellowes and William Buick at odds of 25/1. Campanelle took the second race with the in form Frankie Dettori on board for Wesley Ward. The win bringing in nearly £30,000 for the winner.

<blockquote class=”twitter-tweet”><p lang=”en” dir=”ltr”>A superb performance from Campanelle from stall one as she quickens smartly to land the Queen Mary Stakes 🏆<br><br>An 11th Royal Ascot winner for US trainer Wesley Ward 🇺🇸<br><br>And a fourth winner of the week for <a href=”https://twitter.com/FrankieDettori?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”>@FrankieDettori</a> <a href=”https://twitter.com/hashtag/RoyalAscot?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”>#RoyalAscot</a> <a href=”https://t.co/SO34IfYTFC”>pic.twitter.com/SO34IfYTFC</a></p>&mdash; Ascot Racecourse (@Ascot) <a href=”https://twitter.com/Ascot/status/1274317626290966529?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”>June 20, 2020</a></blockquote> <script async src=”https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js” charset=”utf-8″></script>

In the Coronation Stakes Dettori also won. However, this time for Ireland trainer Jessie Harrington with Alpine Star at odds of 9/2. Back in second came Oisin Murphy with Sharing and in third Quadrilateral for Jason Watson and trainer Roger Charlton. Frankie Dettori got his third winner of the day through Palace Pier for trainer John Gosden at odds of 4/1. In second came Pinatubo for Will Buick and Charlie Appleby and in third came Wichita for Ryan Moore and Aidan O’Brien.

Trainer Kevin Ryan and jockey Kevin Stott then combined for a quickfire double. Firstly, winning the Diamond Jubilee Stakes aboard Hello Youmzain at odds of 4/1. Dream of Dreams was back in second Sir Michael Stoute and Ryan Moore. Stott then went on to win the next race, the Wokingham Stakes aboard Hey Jonesy at odds of 18/1. Summerghand was in second for James Doyle at 15/2 and Spanish City in third for Andrea Atzeni at 16/1. The final on the card went the way of the favourite Who Dares Wins for Tom Marquand and Alan King at evens, with The Grand Visir in second at 11/4 for Richard Kingscote.

Dettori was crowned top jockey at Ascot for the second year in a row. He had 6 winners over the course of the few days. John Gosden was crowned top trainer.

Jockey Frankie Dettori achieved another milestone on Friday securing his 70th Royal Ascot winner aboard Fanny Logan for trainer John Gosden.

Frankie came from last to first in the Hardwicke Stakes at the Berkshire venue. The win gave Fanny Logan another win to add to the impressive record. This includes winning three listed races, a group three last season and finishing 4th in the Breeders Cup in 2019.

This looked a tricky enough race and the odds of 17/2 suggested that Dettori would be up against it. However, the four year old proved that she was more than up for the task. Fanny Logan wasn’t to beat when she hacked up the ground from last to first. She held off Alounak who was a 40/1 shot for trainer Andrew Balding and Kerry jockey Oisin Murphy. Defoe was back in third for Roger Varian and jockey Andrea Atzeni.

Aidan O’Brien’s main hopeful in the race was former Investec Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck who was 9/4 and many people using bonus code for new customers at bet365 were getting 50euro free bets. However, Ryan Moore’s mount never got into the race. Subsequently wasn’t unable to get into a position to challenge the leaders.

Speaking to Racing TV, trainer John Gosden said of Fanny Logan’s win,

“It wasn’t a fluke. At Haydock I asked Rab (Havlin) to drop her out and she ran a lovely race to finish second and after it she had a good blow so we knew she’d come on for it”.

Frankie Dettori was delighted with his 70th Royal Ascot winner he said,”John gave me a lot of confidence as he said she came out of Haydock really well”. “I was further back than I wanted, but they started racing really early and by the time I got to the furlong marker they were all dead. She showed a good turn of foot.”It’s great to get 70 winner – now I want 71!”

In 1990, Dettori became the first teenager since Lester Piggott to ride 100 winners in one season. His first win came at the age of 16 in Turin in November 1986, while his first victory in Britain was the following June. Further success followed, with numerous winners in Group 1 races. On 28 September 1996 he achieved the feat of winning all seven races on a single day at Ascot Racecourse.

On 1 June 2000, Dettori was injured when the Piper Seneca on which he was traveling crashed near Newmarket. A police spokesman commented “It would certainly seem to be a miracle that anyone got out of the crash alive” On 29 December of the same year he received an honorary MBE.
