If you’re thinking about placing a bet on horse racing and are wondering if you can make money from horse racing, you’ve come to the right place. We will be answering the million-dollar question. While there’s no magic formula to success, it’s equally frustrating to find a reliable strategy for betting in horse racing that helps you generate a consistent profit.

What makes things worse is that when you find a good system that helps you win big in horse racing, you may find that it only works in specific races. That means you will be placing several bets and staking thousands of dollars, and we know that the more bets you place, you risk wiping out any profits you have made so far.

Is It Possible to Make Money from Horse Race Betting?

It doesn’t come as a surprise to learn that people and punters all want to know one thing “Can you make money from horse racing?” and the short answer is: Yes, you can. There’s a lot of money to be made from horse racing betting, but only if you’re willing to make efforts, which means knowing how to read bets or investing in a tipping service for horse racing like Neds that has a proven track record of success.

That would mean devoting most of your time to crafting and developing a horse racing betting strategy to beat the bookmakers and working with a horse racing betting service that does all the work for you. Whatever method you choose to employ, your end goal remains the same, to be successful in horse race betting and make a lot of money.

Even though it’s possible to create a winning strategy for betting in horse racing that is based around laying, backing, and matched betting, only 2% of punters have made a living from horse racing. Those numbers don’t fill you with confidence, but it is possible to make money from the sport.

The Secret to Making Money from Horse Racing

When you adopt a strategy for horse racing based around backing, trading, and laying, it’s vital to treat your funds like other financial investments. That means assessing how to minimise and spread your risk, like in the stock market, and find a way to consistently generate profits and achieve steady growth instead of aiming for get-rich-quick schemes.

Now that we have cleared most of your reservations about making money from horse racing, let’s reveal the secrets to helping you achieve your goals. Here’s what you must do:

Find a Winning System

The key to success in horse racing betting is finding a winning system that consistently provides you results. That’s easier said than done, but you won’t be doing most of the heavy lifting when you’re working with a tipping service.

They will do all the research, and their experts will have tried-and-trusted methods that will help guarantee results. You will be paying a monthly fee, but their advice will allow you to build a winning system for horse racing.

Backing to Win

You should try backing to win on based horses, whose form reflects that they should have shorter odds than those quoted in the market. It’s a good way to win large profits, especially if you are backing a favourite outsider with long odds to win, which is known as a ‘value’ bet.

When you subscribe for betting tips, you will also get expert analysis on various horses with the best chances of crossing the post in the first place. That exponentially increases your chances of winning big when placing your bets in horse racing.

Lay to Lose

There are other ways to make money in horse racing apart from backing the winners. You can even make money if you lay the odds for weak favourites on different betting sites and platforms. Several lay systems that are profitable tend to focus on jumps racing, turf racing, and all-weather events. They have a fixed-liability approach, which is designed to help them keep their profits at maximum levels.

Trading

The most dependable and consistent way to make money from horse racing involves trading on trading platforms. When you know the sport, you can learn how to effectively trade and enjoy profits, around $200 per day. That’s not a bad amount of money you can make in a day by betting on horse racing.

Conclusion

Not everyone who bets in horse racing will make money, and most people tend to lose entire fortunes when gambling on the sport. Always be careful when betting on horse racing, and ensure that you’re only betting with money you can afford to lose.

Signing up with a horse racing tipping service does improve your chances of winning as you can take advantage of a reliable gambling system that shares a strategy that helps you make profits and make money from horse racing.

The last three winners of Unibet Morgiana Hurdle will feature in the latest renewal of the Punchestown Winter Festival showpiece

Crowds will return to Grade 1 action at Punchestown for the first time since 2019 this weekend as the ever-popular two-day Winter Festival hosts the Unibet Morgiana Hurdle on Sunday.

Last year’s winner Abacadabras will try to repeat the feat, this time in front of the Punchestown public, where he will face a potential field of six select rivals following the latest forfeit stage today.

Gordon Elliott ended a nine-year Willie Mullins stranglehold on the Unibet Morgiana Hurdle last season and holds a pair of aces this time around with the highly touted four-year-old Zanahiyr joining Abacadabras in the list of acceptors.

Mullins unsurprisingly holds a strong hand in a race which he has previously won with Thousand Stars, Hurricane Fly on three occasions, Nichols Canyon, Faugheen, Sharjah, and Saldier with the most recent winning pair among his team for this weekend.

Improving mare Echoes In Rain and Stormy Ireland are in the Closutton team. Joseph O’Brien’s versatile Darasso completes the potential field.

Speaking this afternoon, Patrick Mullins commented: “Sharjah is just one step off the very, very best. He’s a proper Grade 1 horse. He won the Unibet Morgiana Hurdle before but he won it coming off winning the Galway Hurdle.

“He has a great record at Leopardstown at Christmas but he will run this weekend at Punchestown all being well and I’d expect a good performance but he will probably improve for it.”

Mullins this year won the Galway Hurdle on Saldier and of the Rich Ricci-owned seven-year-old he added:

“Saldier has had a super summer with Galway and Tipperary. He would have a fitness edge on the winter horses and he’s won this race before. We did try and step him up in trip last year and we might try that again so we’ll wait and see.

“We have also left Echoes In Rain and Stormy Ireland in the race this weekend,” Mullins confirmed.

Mullins has earmarked this weekend for the Closutton troops.

“This tends to be the start of the National Hunt season for us. We’re probably a week or 10 days off being full steam ahead as we had quite a dry autumn so we didn’t rush them but we will still be well represented because Punchestown is such a good track for getting good horses going.”

Cape Gentleman and Embittered look to be two standout performers in the Grade 2 BetVictor Casino Novice Chase on Saturday.

Cheltenham Festival hero Bob Olinger could make his eagerly anticipated debut over fences in Saturday’s opening BetVictor Loyalty Club Beginners Chase, a race won two years ago by Faugheen and last year by Asterion Forlonge.

The Grade 2 Liam & Valerie Brennan Florida Pearl Novice Chase is the chief supporting race on Sunday with Albert Bartlett winner Vanillier given an entry thereby Gavin Cromwell where he could face impressive Thurles winner Ballyshannon Rose for Paul Fahey.

On both Saturday and Sunday racing begins at 12:00 with tickets €15 and €10 for Students and OAP’s. Dine packages are available from €89.

Irish jockey Oisin Murphy was crowned Britain’s Champion Jockey for the third year in a row at Ascot on Saturday.

The 26-year-old has racked up 153 wins since the championship started at Newmarket on May 1, two more than his closest pursuer William Buick who threw down a strong challenge in the closing weeks of the season.

Murphy, who is retained by Qatar Racing, is the third jockey this century to claim three consecutive titles, following fellow Irishmen Richard Hughes (2012-2014) and Kieren Fallon (2001-2003).

Highlights for Murphy have centred around star filly Alcohol Free. The duo captured the G1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, where Murphy was Top Jockey for the first time, before overcoming all-aged opposition in the G1 Qatar Sussex Stakes at Goodwood.

Murphy said: “I am over the moon and thrilled to get it across the line. Thank you to my family and everyone – I’ve got a massive support group.

“The last week I’ve had a lot of people on my side. Frankie Dettori has been there every day making sure my spirits are up and I was riding off instinct as normal which is key.

“You need to make every ride count and I was running out of opportunities. I held it together thankfully in the end.

“I think everyone knows that I am human and quite honest. But I need to do better and I don’t want any issues surrounding my career. Let’s just focus on riding winners and hopefully winning another jockeys’ championship.

“I’m 26-years-old so I think I will keep trying for a few more years. Horses are my life and I’m never happier than when I’m on the back of a horse. I’ve bought my showjumpers and they keep me busy too.

“Sheikh Fahad and Qatar Racing have a few horses to go to America for the Breeders’ Cup. There are lots of international races in Hong Kong and Japan coming up so I will be busy.

“William [Buick] was getting a lot more support than I was in the last couple of weeks and the likes of Ed Walker, Hughie Morrison, Andrew Balding and Saeed bin Suroor have been amazing, so thanks to them.”

The QIPCO Guineas Festival at Newmarket’s Rowley Mile, one of Britain’s premier Flat racing fixtures, is to be extended to three days from 2022.

In an exciting enhancement to the two-day weekend meeting, which stages the first two Classics of the season, racing will now also take place on the Friday and run from April 29th to May 1st in 2022.

The QIPCO 2000 and QIPCO 1000 Guineas will remain in their current positions, with further details about Friday 29th April including the race programme, what racegoers can expect off the track and ticket details announced in due course.

Sophie Able, Newmarket Racecourses’ General Manager, said: “We’re delighted to be enhancing one of British racing’s most prestigious Flat racing fixtures and a meeting which has shown sustained growth in the last decade.

“An additional day means more flexibility to optimise the meeting’s race programme both for participants and those who follow and bet on racing, as well as the chance to use the existing infrastructure to create another great day out for our customers.

“There are wider benefits too in terms of the shape of Newmarket’s early-season fixture list, more recovery time for the course itself and an easier operational switch onto the July Course.

“Most of all though, Newmarket at the beginning of May is a magical place to be, and this is another chance to see the home of horseracing at its very best.

“We’re excited about the opportunities for further growth this change will bring, and the benefits racing will see through subsequent reinvestment, and we hope everyone looks forward to a three-day QIPCO Guineas Festival next year as much as we will.”

Rod Street, Chief Executive of British Champions Series, said: “The QIPCO Guineas Festival is one of the highlights of the British sporting calendar and we welcome the fact that racegoers will be able to enjoy a third day of brilliant racing from the Rowley Mile.

“Whilst the circumstances in 2020 were very different, we have seen the interest that a three-day Festival is able to generate and very much view this as a chance to engage more people in one of racing’s most important events.”

A BBC Panorama investigation has reported that thousands of racehorses are being sent to slaughterhouses in Britain and Ireland.

Covert recordings have shown that rules designed to protect horses from cruel deaths have been regularly ignored by one of the UK’s biggest abattoirs.

The BBC article on the investigation says that some of the slaughtered animals were once owned and trained by some of the biggest trainers in racing.

Some of these horses had previous illustrious racing careers and had won thousands of pounds over the course of their careers.

The abattoir in question told the BBC that it did not condone animal abuse but one expert believes the footage from cameras installed by campaign group Animal Aid are breaches of the regulations that abattoirs must follow.

The majority of horses seen in the footage captured came from Ireland and were young.

BBC Panorama revealed in the article that three racehorses Gordon Elliot had trained in Meath were among the many Irish horses killed at the abattoirs.

The trainer, who is currently suspended after a photo of him on a phone call sitting atop a dead horse was made public, told Panorama that none of the horses were sent to the abattoir by him.

He stated to the BBC that the horses were not under his care when they were killed.

Elliot said to the BBC that two of them were given to a horse dealer to be “rehomed if possible, and if not, to be humanely euthanised” and gave the third horse to another rider as requested by its owner.

He noted that the first time he learned of their fate was when Panorama contacted him and that he has ensured the appropriate and proper treatment and welfare of animals that have been in his possession and has rehomed a substantial number of them.

Animal Aid’s cameras captured multiple instances of apparent regulation breaches, including horses being killed in sight of each other and being shot from a distance.

Horse Racing Ireland said it placed great importance on the welfare of the people and horses in the industry, when asked by the BBC

The British Horseracing Authority said to Panorama that it has a commitment to improving already high standards of care for racehorses and that it has demonstrated that.

The BHA said it would “consider carefully any issues raised” by the Panorama programme.

Dene Stansall of Animal Aid said to the BBC that he can understand why so many people are interested in horse racing.

“[But] because of the poor welfare record, the number of horses dying and being killed in slaughterhouses, I can no longer support that – and I think a lot of the public would feel the same way.”

Panorama: The Dark Side of Horse Racing is on BBC One on Monday at 20:30 and is available on the BBC iPlayer after it is broadcast

According to the Sinn Fein website in December 2017 they want to cut horse racing and greyhound budget. They have voted against the horse racing and greyhound budget in 2019.

The spokesperson for Sinn Fein on Agriculture, Marine and Food, Martin Kenny TD, expressed the concern of public money been given to the horse and greyhound industry.

He classed the horse and greyhound racing industry as “a club of very rich people”. Personally, I don’t think he is correct. Not all people in industry are rich. He said, “There are very many people who feel that the amount of public money, 80 million euro, being put into the horse and greyhound racing industry mainly benefits a sector of society which is really a club of very rich people”.

Furthermore, Kenny also stated that the industry is “long past investment for development and growth. He said “I do understand how some industries and sectors need to get investment in order to stimulate their development and growth, however this sector is long past that stage”. In addition he stated that all money that is given to horse racing goes towards prize money for races. He said that most of this then goes to the more well off or the elite sector.

Kenny stated that Sinn Fein would not support the use of public money in horse racing and greyhounds due to the lack of governance in the Horse Racing Ireland (HRI) and the Greyhound Board. It stated “Sinn Féin does not support the amount of money being placed in the horse and greyhound racing industry, in the context of what is continuing to go on.”

With the election set to get underway these remarks will certainly not go down well with horse racing and greyhound people. In fact, if you want to see the current odds of the election you can find it here.

The Galway Races gets underway on Monday. Of course due to the current restrictions no crowds will in the stands but that doesn’t mean that some top class action will happen at Ballybrit. Let’s take a look a Day 1 and what to expect.

The 8 race card will see a mixture of races. First up at 4.10 is Claregalway hotel maiden. Aidan O’Brien’s charge Wembley would be my selection here at odds of 11/8. The horse finished 2nd in a 2yo maiden race last week at The Curragh and will surely come on for that here. Trusted Alley for Mick O Callaghan and Leigh Roche is another to keep an eye on for sure with plenty of experience.

In the 4.40 race my selection is Kokura for the in form Johnny Murtagh yard. The yard has a 24% strike rate in the last 14 days. Finished 4th in latest race at Naas, has a good draw here and is my selection at 10/3.  Royal Canford at odds of 6/1 can win the 5.15 race for WJ Lee and Willie McCreery. Has the experience having finished second in this race last year so could go one better. Lightning Amber for Dermot Weld, Aced It for Joseph O’Brien are also in with each way chances.

The 5.45 is an open race but an each wya shout for Colin Keane and Kieran Cotter with Fridtjof Nansen at 5/1. Finished 9 of 18 at the  Curragh on latest start but has each way claims here in an open affair. Globe Theatre for me is the selection in the 6.15 at odds of 14/1. Again probably go with each way. Shane Crosse and Joseph O’Brien have a 14% strike rate in the last two weeks. Other horses that can go close are Centroid and Share the Honour.

It’s hard to look last Sharjah in the 6.45 race for Patrick and Willie Mullins. Trainer has raced much in the last 14 days but has a strike rate of 33%. Won’t be far away here. De Name Escapes Me also runs here for Noel Meare and Derek O’Connor for the JP McManus yard, as does Dalton Highway for Dermot Weld and JJ Codd.

Yulong Pearlisland is the selection for the 7.15 race for Shane Foley and Jessica Harrington. Horse has won over this trip so that has to be noted. At 4/1 is a good selection. The final race at 7.45pm can go the way of Mt Leinster for Willie and Patrick Mullins. Hasn’t run since February but is rated 142 over hurdle. Clearly stables first string will be thereabouts for sure.

Wexford man Aidan O’Brien made history on Saturday with another win in the Epsom Derby. The Ballydoyle based trainer won with Serpentine who backed up the win in a maiden at Curragh.

Serpentine was a complete outsider, at least by the odds of 25/1. Jockey Emmet McNamara was also looking for his first win in his first Derby. The wins take O’Brien’s record to 8 wins. Khalifa Sat finished second at massive odds of 50/1, while another one of O’Brien’s horses Amhran Na Bhfiann finished in third at odds of 66/1. Ed Walkers English King could only manage 5th, while Ryan Moore was 6th on board another from the Ballydoyle stable, Mogul.

McNamara opted to take a lead from the front and he stretched the lead coming up to the 2f pole. This is probably what won the race as the other horses in the race left it to late to make any kind of impact. In the end Serpentine won by 5 and a half lengths. Speaking after the race McNamara said, “I think I got a little bit of a freebie. I had huge amount of confidence in the horse having spoken to Aidan during the week”.

The Limerick man continued, “He said he was a horse that is going to stay a mile and six well. He said jump, go your own tempo and just from halfway, from the six to the five, give him a breather. He said he’ll keep going and he was right”.

O’Brien was impressed with McNamara. Speaking to Racing Post he said, “Emmet gave him a brilliant ride. He judged the pace well and he knew he was on a horse that would stay every yard of the mile and a half.”We know the road is so long with so many links in the chain,” he said. “You never expect anything, you always do your best, hope it will happen and then accept the result.”

Aidan O’Brien has a strong hand of six horses that will run in the Investec English Derby on Saturday at Epsom. The race will see 16 horses for the right to win one of biggest races in flat racing.

Ed Walker will have the favourite (English King). He won at Lingfield Derby Trial and will be the mount of Frankie Dettori. The Italian jockey will be looking for his third Derby win having won aboard Authotized in 2007 and Golden Horn in 2015.

Aidan O’Brien runs six in the race and will pose a significant threat to the market principles. The Wexford man is looking for his 8th Derby success. He had 7 entries but Armory was removed for the list of entries. Russian Emperor is O’Brien’s best chance, at least according to the odds. Mogul also runs here who finished fourth in the King Edward Stakes. Irish 2,000 Guineas Runner Up Vatican City has also strong credentials. Amhran na Bhfiann, Serpentine and Mythical are complete the hopefuls from the Ballydoyle yard.

William Muir has Pyledriver running who won the King Edward VII Stakes, albeit surprisingly. Mohican Heights also runs for the David Simcock yard. Paul Cole has a runner in the race with Khalifa Sat. Jessie Harrington has Golden Maze in the race, with Hugo Palmer running Emissary, Ralph Beckett running Max Vega and John Gosden with Worthily.

The Oaks will see a field of eight go to post. Aidan O’Brien runs three in the race with Love, Passion and Ennistymon. John Gosden runs Frankly Darling, whom is a daughter of the great Frankel. Her trainer Mr John Gosden is looking for his fourth win in 7 seasons in the oaks. Tiempo Vuela also runs for yard. Roger Varian has two runners in the race with Queen Daenerys and Gold Wand.

It’s promises to be an exciting weekend for sure.

More and more sport is gradually returning to our screens and after nearly 3 months without it we can all finally sit down and enjoy some this weekend. Check out my top 5 live sports to watch this weekend.

1. UFC 250, Las Vegas – Sunday, 01.00am, BT Sport 1

Some big fights on the card in Las Vegas with Amanda Nunes v Felicia Spencer the main event on the night. Raphael Assuncao and Cody Garbrandt also face off in the octagon where something will have to give as both fighters are unbeaten, Other fights on the card include Sean O’Malley v Eddie Wineland, Neil Magny v Anthony Rocco Martin and Aljamain Sterling v Cory Sandhagen.

2. Live Racing Newmarket – Saturday 1.15pm, Racing UK

A big racing festival in Newmarket with the 1000 and 2000 Guineas down for decision. The 2000 takes place on Saturday, with the 1000 on Sunday. Ireland’s very own Aidan O’Brien will have a plethora of runners in the race. All eyes will be on the unbeaten Pinatubo for Godolphin though. On Sunday, the 1000 Guineas take place. Quadrilateral heads the market along with Love. The races takes place at 3.35pm.

3. Snooker Championship League – Saturday, 4.00pm, ITV4

The competition is currently ongoing and with already some cracking games. More group games will take place on Saturday from the groups. The pick of matches include Stuart Bingham v Ricky Walden.

4. German Bundesliga – Bayer Leverkusen v Bayern Munich – Saturday, 2.30pm, BT Sport 1

A win here for Bayern would not wrap up the title but will go a long way of doing so especially if Dortmund fail to win against Hertha Berlin later that evening. Bayern are 7 points ahead of their Bundesliga rivals at present. Leverkusen are in 5th place and are still in with a chance of getting a Champions League spot.

5. IndyCar Texas 600, Sunday, 01.00am, Sky Sports F1

If you love your racing then this is for you. Indycar returns to Texas early Sunday morning Ireland time. The president of Indycar said this week that the safety plan in place is thorough and that it will be a fantastic event.
