Ireland U20 v England U20 Preview: Familiar Rivals Meet Again in World Championship Opener

Ireland begin their 2026 World Rugby Under-20 Championship campaign on Saturday with a huge Pool C clash against England at the Avchala Stadium in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Kick-off is at 12.30pm Irish time, with the game shown live on Premier Sports and RugbyPass TV.

This is a repeat of one of Ireland’s standout results from the Under-20 Six Nations, when Andrew Browne’s side defeated England 31-21. However, there have been several important changes since that meeting, and both teams arrive in Georgia with fresh selection calls, new combinations and plenty to prove.

England Favourites Despite Six Nations Defeat

England come into the game as bookmakers’ favourites, priced at 4/11, while Ireland are available at 2/1. The handicap has England at -7.5, suggesting the market expects a competitive contest but gives England the edge.

That price is understandable given England’s depth and physical power, but Ireland will not lack belief. They have already beaten this opposition this year and will know that another strong performance could give them the perfect start to their World Championship campaign.

Big Call As Charlie O’Shea Starts At Ten

The major talking point in the Ireland selection is at out-half, where Charlie O’Shea has been handed the number 10 jersey.

O’Shea was used from the bench throughout the Under-20 Six Nations, but Browne has now trusted him to run the Irish attack from the start. It is a big opportunity for the Munster playmaker and one of the most interesting selection decisions of the opening round.

The surprise is that Tom Wood drops to the bench. Wood impressed during the Six Nations and many would have expected him to continue as Ireland’s starting out-half. His ability to cover multiple roles still makes him a major weapon later in the game, but his omission from the starting XV is certainly a bold call.

O’Shea partners fellow Munster player Christopher Barrett in the half-backs, giving Ireland an all-Cork pairing at nine and ten.

Noah Byrne One To Watch

One player Irish supporters should keep a close eye on is Noah Byrne.

The former Dublin minor footballer starts at full-back after impressing throughout the Under-20 Six Nations, where he established himself as one of Ireland’s standout performers. Byrne’s GAA background is clear in his aerial ability, sharp reading of the game and confidence when attacking space.

England are likely to test Ireland’s back three with a strong kicking game, but Byrne has the pace and composure to turn pressure into opportunity. If Ireland can give him broken-field ball, he could be one of their most dangerous attacking outlets.

Ireland Pack Has Power And Continuity

Ireland captain Sami Bishti leads the side from tighthead prop and packs down alongside Max Doyle and Rian Handley in the front row.

Donnacha McGuire and Dylan McNeice form the second-row partnership, while the back row of Josh Neill, Ben Blaney and Connacht’s Diarmaid O’Connell gives Ireland a strong blend of physicality, work rate and ball-carrying threat.

O’Connell’s battle with England captain Connor Treacey at number eight could be one of the defining contests of the game.

England Make Changes From Six Nations Meeting

England have also made notable changes from the side beaten by Ireland earlier this year.

Alan Poku, Zac Finch and Hugh Shields all earn their first Under-20 caps, with Shields starting at out-half. That means Finn Keylock, who featured prominently during the Six Nations, is named on the bench.

England still have plenty of experience across the side. Scrum-half Lucas Friday starts at nine, Nick Lilley brings considerable Under-20 experience in midfield, and captain Connor Treacey leads from number eight.

Their bench also has impact, with Keylock, George Pearson and Jack Lewis among those who could influence the second half.

Key Battles

Charlie O’Shea v Hugh Shields

Both out-halves have something to prove. O’Shea gets his chance after spending the Six Nations on the bench, while Shields makes his Under-20 debut for England. Game management, territory and goal-kicking could decide the match.

Diarmaid O’Connell v Connor Treacey

Ireland’s Connacht number eight faces England’s captain in a major physical battle. Whoever wins the gain line here gives their side a huge platform.

Noah Byrne v England’s Kicking Game

Byrne’s composure under the high ball and ability to counter-attack could be vital. If England kick loosely, Ireland have a player capable of punishing them.

Ireland U20 Team

15. Noah Byrne, 14. Charlie Molony, 13. Rob Carney, 12. James O’Leary, 11. Daniel Ryan, 10. Charlie O’Shea, 9. Christopher Barrett.

1. Max Doyle, 2. Rian Handley, 3. Sami Bishti capt, 4. Donnacha McGuire, 5. Dylan McNeice, 6. Josh Neill, 7. Ben Blaney, 8. Diarmaid O’Connell.

Replacements: Duinn Maguire, Adam Cooper, Jamie Conway, Paddy Woods, Alex Lautsou, James O’Dwyer, Tom Wood, Jack Deegan.

Prediction

England deserve respect as favourites, but Ireland have already shown they can beat this side. The Six Nations win will give Browne’s players real confidence, though England’s changes and physical depth make this a serious challenge.

The selection of Charlie O’Shea at ten is a brave call, while the impact of Tom Wood from the bench could be crucial in the final quarter. If Ireland can match England physically and get Noah Byrne involved from full-back, they have every chance of making a winning start.

Prediction: England U20 24-24 Ireland U20.

Ireland U20 held off the gritty Italians 30-27 in a tight high-scoring 6 Nations game at Virgin Media Park in Cork on Friday night.

Tries a plenty in both halves – as both teams claimed bonus-point tries – a game that was in the balance for most of the night, saw the hosts edge home by three points in the end.

Ireland score first

Ireland took an early lead with a relatively easy penalty kick for Garryowen’s Tom Wood. The Munster player comfortably slotted over from directly in front of the post for 3-0.

Barrett scores Ireland’s opening try

Winger Derry Moloney opened the Italian defence as he burst through the visitor’s side. Beginning in his own half, the Leinster speedster was supported by Noah Byrne and then by Christopher Barrett.

With Moloney offloading to Byrne, Barrett then received possession of the ball, and had the task of touching down for the game’s opening try. A second successful kick of the night from Tom Wood – this time, a conversion – pushed Ireland out to a 13-0 advantage with just over 13 minutes played on the clock.

Ireland defence breached

Despite some moments of both poor passing and substandard handling, the Italians were next on the score sheet. Winger Luca Rossa was on the receiving end of an Azzurri move as the Irish defence was breached for the first time tonight. Francesco Braga added the extras for the visitors, leaving Ireland with a 10-7 lead approaching the end of the first quarter of play.

Winger Ryan gets on score sheet

The hosts laid a charge to the Italian line following a powerful break from centre Rob Carney. With Ireland pummelling the defensive line, winger Daniel Ryan eventually touched down in the furthest corner from the Main Stand.

With a more difficult conversion attempt – right on the side line – Wood was unsuccessful this time, meaning Ireland had a 15-7 lead.

Converted try and penalty give Italians half-time advantage

Italy struck back immediately with a pushover try that saw hooker Valerio Pelli crash over for a five-pointer. A favourable position gave Braga a relatively easy effort – which he converted, as the Irish lead was reduced to a single point.

With the half-time whistle close, Italy won a penalty which Braga kicked to give the Italian side an unexpected 17-15 lead at the interval.

Half-time: Ireland U20 15  Italy U20 17

The home side claimed the first score of the second half. Excellent teamwork and understanding between centre Rob Carney and Derry Moloney saw the winger score.

With Carney in possession as he made rapid progress from his own half of the field to the opposition’s, the Cashel RFC man kept the Italian defence guessing as to whether he would go for the line himself or pass out to Moloney. Ultimately he did neither, as a nicely placed grubber kick was successfully chased by Moloney who scored in the corner to the delight of the home fans.

Tom Wood was unsuccessful with his effort – his second missed kicked of the evening.

Pelli’s second try

With the Italians enjoying a period of domination on the field, Valerio Pelli claimed his second try of the night. As Italy made numerous efforts to cross the try-scoring line, the brawn and strength of the Mogliano Veneto Rugby player was required to complete the task. Kicker Braga missed at the posts for the first time, as the Italians held a slender 22-20 advantage.

Bonus-point try for Josh Neil

Ireland soon fought back as they noticeably upped the tempo. With the Azzurri defence penalised near their own line, Ireland reacted quickly and three quick motions saw Josh Neil of Leinster in for the bonus-point try.

Wood kicked – from directly in front of the posts – for a 27-22 lead, but the Munster number 10 soon extended this advantage, as a successful penalty kick – which saw Italian Davide Sette sin-binned – gave Ireland a little breathing space on the score board, 30-22, with the game inside the final quarter.

Replacement Jacopo de Rossi gave the Italians hope of taking the victory in this game when his teammates’ powerful maul allowed him touch down for a try, his side’s bonus-point five-pointer. Braga, who had been so successful with his kicking in the opening period, missed his second of this half, as Ireland faced into the final 10 minutes with a slender three-point advantage, an advantage they would ultimately maintain.

Final score: Ireland U20 30  Italy U20 27

Ireland began their U20 Six Nations campaign with an impressive 53-5 win over Wales at Musgrave Park in Cork on Friday night.

Tries from Chay Mullins, Matthew Devine and Mark Morrissey during the first 40 minutes, while five-pointers from Reuben Crothers, James McNabney, Mullins again, James McCormick and Ben Brownlee in the second half ensured the Welsh suffered a heavy defeat in this Six Nations U20 opener.

Three tries in opening half

Early pressure from Ireland saw the visitors concede three penalties. The final in a series of penalties gave Lansdowne’s Charlie Tector a relatively straightforward kick at the posts, which he duly scored, for an early 3-0 lead.

The strength and power of the Irish scrum was soon rewarded as it set up the speedsters from the back. Munster’s Patrick Campbell cut like a scythe through the Welsh defence and as he drew in men in red, he freed up winger Chay Mullins who touched down in the corner for the opening try of the game.

Tector’s conversion attempt, from a difficult position on the touchline, just drifted left of the posts and wide, leaving Ireland with an 8-0 advantage after 16 minutes.

Wales down to 14 players

On 22 minutes the Wales side was reduced to 14 men when winger Ollie Andrew was sent to the sin bin. The player’s outstretched arm led to a deliberate knock on as Ireland attacked. The team of officials took little time in deciding the young Welsh player’s fate.

Matthew Devine soon made the visitors pay as he burst through the Welsh defensive line to touch down in a central position, allowing Tector an easy kick for the conversion. Ireland U20s were comfortably in control at this stage and had a 20-0 on the score board with only 25 minutes on the clock.

Mullins thought he had bought up a brace of five-pointers just after the half hour as he again touched down in the corner. On review of the TV footage the try was ruled out for obstruction earlier in the move.

Lock Mark Morrissey of Leinster soon made up for the cancellation of Mullins’ try as he scored his side’s third try of the evening within ten minutes of the half time whistle. With Tector adding the conversion, Richie Murphy’s side has a 22 point advantage at the break.

Half time: Ireland U20 22  Wales U20 0

Plenty more Irish tries in second half

It didn’t take lone for the hosts to extend their lead at the beginning of the second half. Ireland U20s showed ambition when awarded a penalty and opted to kick to the slide line. A win from the resultant lineout and a strong drive from the boys in green saw captain Reuben Crothers claimed the score, which kicker Tector converted successfully.

The points had barely registered on the scoreboard when Ballymena’s James McNabney  got in on the scoring action with a try. Though Tector’s conversion effort went left of the posts this time, Ireland were up to 34 points.

That didn’t remain the situation for long, however, as they claimed their sixth try of the game through Chay Mullins, who was claiming a brace of tries on the night. Tector’s last piece of action before his substitution was to add the extras for 41-0.

Another try, this time from hooker James McCormick extended the lead to 46-0 while the  conversion attempt that followed went astray.

Wales U20 finally got on the score board when Oli Andrew breached the Irish defence to claim his side’s only score of the game with a try five minutes from the end, but Ireland had the final say as Ben Brownlee scored a try which was converted by Aitzol King.

Final score: Ireland U20 53 Wales U20 5

Ulster Rugby has announced its academy squad for the upcoming 2021/22 season, with five new faces coming into the squad.

The fresh faces joining the 12-strong group are James Humphreys, Conor McKee, Jude Postlethwaite, George Saunderson and Harry Sheridan.

All five players were involved in this year’s U20 Six Nations campaign for Richie Murphy’s Ireland.

Humphreys, who joins the province from Gloucester Rugby’s Academy set-up, will follow in the footsteps of his father, David Humphreys, as an out-half, having previously played at scrum-half during his school days.

The 20-year-old Queen’s University Belfast student played against Scotland and Italy for Richie Murphy’s national team.

Meanwhile, Belfast-born, Conor McKee, also helped steer Ireland to third place in this year’s Under-20 Six Nations Championship.

The scrum-half, who was the leading points-scorer for his school, Sullivan Upper, in 2019, has already gained valuable experience in the provincial set-up through his involvement with both the U18 Schools and U19 teams.

19-year-old, Jude Postlethwaite, joins the Academy after been recognised as the leading try-scorer in the Danske Bank Ulster Schools’ Cup in 2020, earning him a nomination for the competition’s Player of the Year, whilst playing for RBAI.

Postlethwaite has represented Ireland at Sevens as well as at U20 level and the Lisburn native also enjoyed success as part of last season’s Ulster ‘A’ squad.

George Saunderson, another former pupil of Sullivan Upper School, also gained prominence in the 2020/21 season for his involvement with the province’s ‘A’ side, following time spent with the Ulster U19s.

This led to the 20-year-old prop playing against Wales, France and Italy for the Ireland U20s and scored a try in the latter game.

Rounding off this season’s Year 1 players is 19-year-old, Harry Sheridan – a third product of Sullivan Upper joining the side.

As his school’s leading try-scorer in 2020, the lock, like some of his fellow Academy new-starts, featured in the Ulster ‘A’ setup on top of his international exploits.

He also gained experience in the second row during time spent with the Ulster U19s.

On the selected squad, Ulster Rugby Academy Manager, Gavin Hogg, said: “With a promising new intake, who have already showcased their talent and tenacity, joining our Academy group, I am looking forward to what the season ahead holds.

“I am confident the coaching group and myself will be able to build on the solid foundation which each of these players has established through their involvement over the past number of years in the school, club and international game.

“I would like to thank all of the coaches, particularly those within a domestic game setting, who have played their part in getting these young men to where they are now. The opportunity to continue along the Ulster pathway, all with the support of Dan McFarland and his staff, is fantastic for these players, all of whom have a bright future ahead of them.”

Noel McNamara’s Ireland U20 side began their U20 Six Nations Championship with a 38-26 six-try victory over Scotland U20 at Irish Independent Park in Cork on Friday night.

The home side scored three tries to two in the opening half, before adding a further three, to Scotland’s two five-pointers in the second forty minutes.

PwC Player of the Match Jack Crowley opened the scoring for Ireland U20 when picking up a bouncing ball and spinning inside to cross for a try in the 10th minute of the game. The Cork Constitution player then converted to give the home side an early 7-0 advantage.

Minutes later Scotland were on the score sheet as Euan Ashman scored a try. Nathan Chamberlain levelled the scores at 7-7 approaching the 20 minute mark.

Thomas Clarkson drove over for the green side’s second five-pointer of the game, but Noel McNamara’s charges had to wait referee Gianluca Gnecchi’s consultation with his fellow officials before awarding the score. Jack Crowley converted his second kick from as many efforts as the Irish side moved to double scores ahead, 14-7.

Scotland winger Jack Blain soon improved his side’s position on the scoreboard, showing accuracy in touching down in the corner following a period of domination by the visitors. The difficult conversion effort from the touchline was missed by kicker Nathan Chamberlain, leaving the home side with a slender 2-point lead as the half-time whistle approached.

Ireland U20 fly half Jack Crowley ran 70 yards from deep inside his own half, along the touchline, even fending off a later defensive effort from Scotland, to score a brilliant try for his side.

Crowley stepped up to claim the full seven points by converting in injury time at the end of the opening half. The late 7 points gave Ireland U20 a significant 21-12 advantage at the break.

Half-time: Ireland U20 21 Scotland U20 12.

As early as three minutes after the re-start, Ireland claimed their fourth try of the game as winger Andrew Smith showed his pace as he broke through the Scottish defence. Jack Crowley again converted as McNamara’s boys moved 28-12 ahead.

Another try followed just four minutes later as an Irish break down the touchline saw second row Thomas Ahern, who had been instrumental in the move, use his length to stretch out for the line to touch down for Ireland’s fifth five-pointer. The difficult conversion attempt from the far touchline saw Crowley miss his first kick at goal in the game thus far, leaving the hosts with a commanding 33-12 lead.

It took Scotland until the 62nd minute of the game to get their first score of the second period. Nathan Chamberlain showed strength to break through the Irish centre, touching down under the posts. The No. 10 converted his own try to reduce the home side’s lead, leaving Ireland 33-19 ahead.

Replacement Ciaran Ryan’s try inside the final ten minutes of the game moved Ireland U20 out to 38 points. The conversion was missed when the ball came off the upright.

A late consolation try by Cameron Scott for the visitors, converted by Nathan Chamberlain  saw Ireland U20 run out comfortable 38-26 winners.

Final score: Ireland U20 38 Scotland U20 26.
