Kerry forward Tommy Walsh has retired from inter-county football with Kerry GAA after two spells with the side lasting eight years in total.

Walsh informed Kerry chiefs of his decision today after the climax of the 2021 season, which saw the county fall to Tyrone in the All-Ireland semi-final after winning the Munster Senior Football Championship – his final appearance for the team.

The 33-year-old won two All-Ireland Senior Football Championships with the Kingdom in the first decade of the 21st century – he began his senior football career on their panel in 2007.

The full-forward played a starring role in the 2009 decider against Cork in which he scored four points to help his side to victory and earn his second Celtic Cross.

Tommy did so under Jack O’Connor but will not return to play for the former Kildare senior football manager.

The Kerins O’Rahilly’s man lined out for his county again in the 2015 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship but left the panel before the 2016 instalment, returning in 2019 to play under Peter Keane as the county reached the final for the first time since 2015.

In his time away from the panel after 2009, Walsh played in the Australian Football League with St. Kilda and the Sydney Swans.

He lined out for the Ireland international rules team in the 2010 International Rules series against Australia, which his native country hosted.

Kerry GAA Chairman Tim Murphy released a statement confirming Walsh’s departure: “Earlier [Monday] Tommy Walsh confirmed his decision to retire from the Kerry Senior Football Panel.

“Tommy began his inter-county career as a Minor and quickly progressed through to U-21 and Senior Ranks.

“In the 2009 All-Ireland Series Tommy produced some memorable performances culminating in the All-Ireland Final win over Cork when he contributed a quarter of Kerry’s Scores on the day.

“In October 2009 Tommy moved to Australia where he played Professional AFL until the end of 2014 and re-joined the Kerry Set up for the 2015/216 seasons.

“Over the past two years in particular Tommy’s leadership on and off the field has helped to encourage, motivate, and successfully integrate many of our younger players onto the panel.

“On behalf of all Kerry supporters, I wish to sincerely thank and acknowledge Tommy for all he has done and wish him the very best in the future.”

Kerry GAA senior football manager Jack O’Connor said: “It was with sadness that I learned today of Tommy Walsh’s decision to retire from the Kerry Senior football panel.

“I coached Tommy for two years firstly in 2008 with Kerins O’ Rahilly’s when he was instrumental in helping the Club to a County Final and in 2009 with Kerry.

“He gave one of the great exhibitions to the 2009 All Ireland final against Cork when he scored four great points – two from either foot. Like his father Seanie, he was a man for the big occasion and raised his game accordingly.

“I wish him all the best in retirement, and I hope he continues to enjoy a fruitful Club career for many years to come.”

The Kerry GAA board has had a busy few days between defending the appointment of Jack O’Connor and thanking Peter Keane

O’Connor has been given a two-year term with the county team along with selectors Diarmuid Murphy and Micheál Quirke.

The board has shown their wholehearted support for the newly-picked boss after there were questioned raised about the selection process. Some club representatives thought that it was unfair that Peter Keane’s three-year deal with the team was cut short this summer.

Many felt that he had not been given a good chance as his term was hit by two years of Covid-19 lockdowns. His final game in charge of the county was the semi-final defeat to eventual champions, Tyrone.

In a statement released yesterday, the board thanked the former boss and his backroom for the job they had done for the last two years.

Discussions broke out in the most recent GAA board meeting

Kerry GAA Chairperson Tim Murphy has emphatically rejected claims Keane was treated with disrespect. He has said that he was in constant contact with him and made him fully aware that it was the executive’s decision for the manager from 2022 would be decided by “a competitive process.”

The chairman has also dismissed claims that O’Connor’s appointment was a foregone conclusion before Keane’s dismissal.

“The suggestion that it was a done deal going back three weeks ago, four weeks ago, is totally erroneous, totally untrue, and totally unfounded,” Murphy spoke during a Zoom meeting.

“It’s put out there by individuals in the media who want to undermine us as a selection committee, who want to undermine us as a county committee, and who want to undermine us as an executive.”

Former Waterford hurler Stephen Molumphy was also decided as the Kerry senior hurling manager for a two-year stay. The ex-Déise and Wexford selector will be assisted by Pat Bennett, Brendan O’Sullivan, and Shane Briggs.

James Costello will also continue as county minor manager for his fourth season in charge.

Kerry GAA have announced that they intend to appoint Jack O’Connor as their new senior football manager in what will be his third term in charge of the side.

The news comes 18 days after the 60-year-old left the Kildare senior footballers, citing travel as a reason for his departure.

O’Connor has been in charge of Kerry twice before for a total of seven seasons and brought three All-Ireland titles and four provincial crowns to the county in that time as well as three National League titles.

He guided Kildare to Division 1 this year and the side also reached the Leinster final for the first time since 2017 but failed to get past Dublin, who have only lost one in the provincial championship since 2005.

He will be joined by former Kerry footballers Diarmuid Murphy and Mike Quirke who will join his new backroom as selectors.

Murphy was a selector with the inter-county side under O’Connor during his second spell in charge of the Kingdom and continued in his role when Fitzmaurice, who he replaced, returned to the county setup as the head coach.

Murphy was part of Fitzmaurice’s backroom when they brought the Sam Maguire Cup back to Kerry after a five-year drought in 2014.

A man synonymous with Kerry’s All-Ireland successes in the 20th century, the Dingle native now joins a backroom tasked with ending what will be an eight-year drought in 2022.

Mike Quirke was recently in charge of the Laois senior footballers, leaving his post after two years following a poor run of form.

Both men had played under O’Connor during his two previous spells with the pair picking up all three All-Ireland titles alongside the Dromid Pearses clubman.

Former All-Ireland winner Stephen Stack was also interviewed for the role and an all-star management team was rumoured to have been assembled by Stack.

The Kerry GAA statement says that “The Management Committee of Kerry GAA will be proposing the following names for ratification at our next County Committee meeting scheduled for Monday, 4th October 2021.

Jack O’Connor steps down as Kildare Manager after only two seasons managing the Lilywhites.

The former Kerry manager, who last week flirted with the job he held from 2003-2006 in his first stint and then from 2008-2012. His reasoning for leaving the Leinster side was down to travel commitments, admitting that the job proved much too difficult to carry on.

O’Connor, who won three All-Ireland titles with Kerry signed a three-year contract with Kildare back in August 2019 and did state he would carry on full-time with the panel. However, he will now not fulfil the third campaign.

O’Connor stated;

“After two challenging but very enjoyable years I have decided to step away from managing the Kildare senior football team,” said O’Connor, who guided Kildare back to Division 1 this season with a promotion play-off win over Meath.

“This was a very difficult decision for me and one that I agonised over during the past few weeks. I have been made feel very welcome during my time in Kildare and I have worked with some great people up here. However, a round journey of over eight hours from St Finian’s Bay to Newbridge and back takes its toll and I felt this was unsustainable for the coming season.

“I’d like to thank the Kildare County Board for putting faith in me two years ago. As management, we have worked incredibly hard since then to improve the standards in Kildare.

A statement from Kildare GAA admitted that O’Connor and his management team were already planning the upcoming 2022 season, but due to the travel from Kerry to Kildare, his desire to return has diminished.

Kildare GAA Chairman, Mick Gorman recognised O’Connor as a great servant during his time in the Lilywhite dugout.

“We hold Jack in the highest esteem and the impact of his experience, influence and commitment as a manager will leave a lasting impression,” Gorman said.

“We wish Jack the very best of luck in his future endeavours. He will always be welcome here in Kildare.”
