Horse Racing Ireland have released a full flat racing programme for the months of June and July. It includes the big festival in Galway which will still be run on the same dates.

As I reported earlier this month Horse Racing is set to resume in Ireland behind closed doors on June 8th with action in Naas. There is in total 47 meetings in July alone. However, there will be three days now with no racing in month due to extra meetings been added. The director of horse racing Ireland Jason Morris said, “We recognise that there will be a large demand for opportunities to run and our aim is to provide all Flat horses with their first run as quickly as possible following the resumption of racing by offering a balanced programme across all age groups, distances and categories. There will be 53 flat meetings up to the end of July with this objective in mind”.

Mr Morris said that 22 national hunt meetings will take over June and July, compared to 17 between the same time last year. He continued, “There will be eight-race cards run at every opportunity where stable capacity allows, with the protocols requiring one stable per horse for hygiene reasons”.

The Galway Racing Festival will take place from July 27th to August 2nd. However, there will be some changes to recent year’s. The first two days of the festival will see flat racing only. This will be followed by National Hunt racing on the Wednesday. Thursday and Friday. The final two days of the meeting will be flat cards according to Horse Racing Ireland. Looking at some other courses, Killarney has seen it’s racing cut from five days to three days. Racing will begin in Cork on July 5th, which will be the first of four meetings at the track.

Bellewstown in Meath will host three meetings, with the first on July 2nd. Leopardstown will host meetings beginning on June 9th right up to the end of July. Meanwhile, the Curragh will host the Irish Tattersalls Gold Cup on Sunday the 26th of July.

The full list of horse racing meetings can be viewed here.

GAA and Soccer is set to go ahead in July after the phased restrictions of Covid 19 were announced. Golf courses will also open on a restricted basis in the first phase. Leo Varadkar announced the details in which he said the current restrictions will remain in place till the 18th of May.

The first phase will see sports amenities been open to the public. For example tennis courts and golf courses would fall under this as social distancing can be maintained. Competitions will not be allowed though in terms of golf, it will be members only. The second phase commences on June 8th. This will see people allowed to engage in outdoor sport and fitness activities. RTE Sport report that under this fall small group team sports training (no matches), social distancing will have to be adhered to.

Phase 3 will commence on June 29th. This stage will allow behind closed doors sporting activities. However, arrangement have to be in place to maintain social distancing. Phase 4 and Phase 5 is where we can see some light at the tunnel. July 20th will see GAA and soccer teams resume activities. Limitations will be have to be in place on the amount of spectators while also ensuring strict social distancing is in place. The final phase, which is phase 5, will allow allow physical contact sports such as rugby and boxing. Sports clubs and gyms will also be allowed to open once cleaning has carried out and social distancing maintained.

The signs are looking good for a return of some sort of sport for us to watch. Whether the GAA will start talks on starting the championship for the end of July onwards I’m not so sure. It would put a lot of pressure on players and managers. Teams will obviously have to train to get up to match fitness etc which obviously would take a while. Only time will tell that’s for sure !

It is looking ever so likely now that many major events will not go ahead this year. The government have stated that mass gatherings are “unlikely” to go ahead in Ireland in 2020. This will almost certainly rule out the GAA championships. However, some events will  potentially take place worldwide and I will take a look at live sport set for July below.

John Deere Classic: PGA Tour – The John Deere Classic on the PGA Tour is set to go ahead in July at present. Dylan Frittelli won the event last season. The South African scooped over 1 million dollars in prize money.

Newmarket July Festival: Horse Racing – If horse racing is to go ahead in the UK it will likely be behind closed doors. No announcement has been made as of yet but this festival attracts all the big horses from the big stables. If it goes ahead or not as of yet I am not so sure. It is due to take place from 9-11th of July.

Summer X Games – Extreme Sports – As of now the Summer X Games are going ahead. They will take place from the 16th to the 19th of July in Minneapolis. Events include skateboarding, bmx biking and moto x.

Austrian Grand Prix – Formula One – It is likely that the Austrian Grand Prix will go ahead after after Austria have eased their restrictions in recent days. This will likely be a race where no spectators are present. It is due to take place from July 3rd to July 5th.

British Grand Prix – Formula One- The British GP organisers have said they can host two races if required over the summer. These will likely be without spectators also. It is pencilled in for July 19th at the moment.

Major League Baseball All-Star Game – Baseball – At the moment this is likely to go ahead. The USA have yet to lift restrictions. But Trump is eager to get everything back to work and return to some sort of normality. The Major League Baseball All-Star is meant to take place on July 14th.

Anthony Joshua v Kubrat Pulev: Boxing – The fight between the pair was originally set for June but due to the virus it was postponed. Pulev has posted on his social media stating the fight will go ahead at the end of July.
