Southern Gaels would be considered one of the favorites for this competition after they won the Donal Curtin Cup last month. They beat Rathmore 4-11 to 1-13 in the final with both sides breezing through the championship.

Another team to watch out for will be Na Gaeil after they made a big impression in their first match of the season against Beaufort.

The Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA) has confirmed a new format for the All-Ireland Championship with 12 counties to take part in the senior championship.

It is expected that the round Robin format will compromise of four groups of three teams at senior level. The winners of each group will the go into the All-Ireland semi-final stage. There are four seeded teams, All-Ireland Champions Dublin, Galway, Cork and Mayo. Because they are seeded these means these teams will be kept apart until the semi- final stages. The remaining 8 counties will be placed in a group, which will be done by an open draw on June 30th.

In addition to this the format for the intermediate ladies football championship is similar. 13 teams will be playing in this grade, meaning of course an odd group. It will mean one group of four and three groups of three.

At Junior level, the six counties will be split into two groups of three. Four semi finals will be up for grabs, the top two in each group. The LGFA are hoping to hold the championship over 7 weekends. However, two gap weekends will be included, after the group games and before the finals.

The times, dates and venues will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

National league thrown into doubt

The GAA has suspended all activity until March 29th. This announcement follows on from the government decision to close schools, colleges and childcare facilities earlier today. The suspension also includes Ladies GAA and all Club games as well as inter-county fixtures.

The gaa.ie website released a statement which stated that:

“In light of this morning’s Government announcement, the GAA, An Cumann Camógaíochta and the Ladies Gaelic Football Association have decided to suspend all activity at club, county and educational levels until March 29 (inclusive) from midnight.”

The Suspension creates uncertainty around the remaining National League fixtures. The Allianz football league has two rounds of league fixtures as well as a finals weekend remaining. While the hurling league quarter-finals were due to be played this weekend.

The month of April had been previously designated for club games. This may now change if the league fixtures are to be completed before the Championship begins.

The u20 All-Ireland football semi-finals were fixed for a doubleheader at Croke park on St.Patrick’s day. A new date will also need to be found for those games.
