Ranked: Top Ten Biggest Clubs in England

We’ve ranked the ten best defenders in Premier League history, the best midfielders in Premier League history and most recently, the best strikers in Premier League history, but now it is time to find out who are the biggest clubs in English football history?

What makes a big club? Well, many things can be looked at, for instance, how many trophies have been won by the respective club, time spent at the top of English football, how iconic the stadium is, the fanbase, financial importance and global notoriety.

With that being said, here are the ten biggest clubs in England, ranked.

Ranked: Top Ten Biggest Clubs in England

10. Nottingham Forest

11 Major Honours

League Titles (1978), European Cup (2 times), FA Cup (2 times), League Cup (4 times), Uefa Super Cup (1980), Community Shield (1978)

During the Brian Clough era starting in 1975, Nottingham Forest saw a massive overhaul of success. From 1977 to 1990 the club won a single league title, four League cups and most impressively, two European Cups during that timeframe.

With context, those achievements sound even better as the club won all those trophies within three years of getting promoted from the Second Division. Fairytale stuff to say the least.

That being said, the past few decades for the club has seen them relegated twice to the Championship, both in 1997 and in 1999, where they have stayed ever since.

9. Aston Villa

22 Major Honours

League Titles (7 times), FA Cup (7 times), League Cup (5 times), European Cup (1982), Uefa Super Cup (1982), Community Shield (1981)

The most successful club in the Midlands, with more European Cups,  than Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham combined, Aston Villa were once a behemoth in English football, with seven league titles, seven FA Cups and five League Cups, Villa are often forgotten by many modern-day football fans as being a ”big club”.

Having experienced six relegations during their history, their last being the 2015/2016 Premier League season, finishing 20th, they were soon back up playing top-flight football and are now a part of the core clubs to represent English football.

8. Leeds United

9 Major Honours

League Titles (3 times), FA Cup (1972), League Cup (1968), Inter-Cities Fairs Cup Winner (2 times), Community Shield (2 times)

Talking about a club like Leeds can go either one of two ways, you call them a ”small club” because of their long absence from the Premier League or to go with the norm and refer to them as a ”huge club” in the history of English football, the latter would be the obvious choice for many.

While they spent over 16-years out of the top flight, Leeds has recently made a resurgence, currently in their second season in the Premier League, where they rightfully belong.

A one-club city, Leeds United have won a decent amount of league and domestic cups while making it to the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2001, an iconic club in England, Leeds will forever be listed as a top tier club.

7. Everton

24 Major Honours

League Titles (9 times), FA Cup (5 times), Cup Winners Cup (1985), Community Shield (9 times)

In terms of English titles, Everton is only beaten out by three clubs (Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal), and more than Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham, the Merseyside club are very much a massive club in English football.

Founded before Liverpool, Everton were once a much bigger and more well-renowned club than their rivals for quite some time, making 13 FA Cup final appearances and winning five since they were founded all the back in 1878.

Their trophy cabinet cannot be doubted, with numerous FA Cups and league titles to their name while boasting a tremendous fanbase and being only one of six clubs to never be relegated during the Premier League era, Everton are simply massive.

6. Tottenham Hotspurs

24 Major Honours

League Titles (2 times), FA Cup (8 times), League Cup (4 times), Uefa Cups (2 times), Cup Winners Cup (1963), Community Shield (7 times)

It is hard not to malign Spurs as a mere nearly club, always in the shadow of London rivals Chelsea and especially Arsenal, Tottenham may not be successful, but they are consistent in terms of cementing their place in the higher echelon of English football.

Always in and around the top 6, Spurs were the first London club to win a league and cup double, but that was all the way back in 1961.

Known for their philosophy of attacking and free-flowing football, they were so close to capturing their first Premier League title under Mauricio Pochetinno and even managed to make their first Champions League final in 2019, losing to Liverpool.

They do, however, have the best stadium in England. Make of that what you will.

Ranked: Top Ten Biggest Clubs in England

5. Manchester City

28 Major Honours

League Titles (7 times), FA Cup (6 times), League Cup (8 times), Cup Winners Cup (1970), Community Shield (6 times)

Like Chelsea, Manchester City became a footballing powerhouse with outside foreign investment. Bought in 2008 by a Saudi Arabian group led by Sheikh Mansour, City have become the best team in England over the past decade with shrewd signings and beautiful football to match.

Winning five league titles during that timeframe, with the majority of them being record-breaking seasons and being the first club to reach 100 points in the Premier League, a couple of FA Cups and a plethora of League Cups, it is hard to argue that City is not a massive club in today’s footballing landscape, despite much ridicule.

4. Arsenal

47 Major Honours

League Titles (13 times), FA Cup (14 times), League Cup (2 times), Cup Winners Cup (1994), Inter-Cities Fairs Cup Winner (1970), Community Shield (4 times)

London’s most decorative club based on trophy overhaul since the club’s inception in 1886, Arsenal have the most FA Cup titles with a record of 14 and with the third most league titles in English football with 13, their last being in 2003/04.

During the 1930s, they won five league titles in eight years and four FA Cups, making them at the time, certainly the biggest club in London and perhaps the biggest club in England.

They’ve also been the only side in Premier League history to go a whole season unbeaten, winning the league title in the process. Since then, they have fallen off a cliff, steadily moving down the league table, and without a league title in 17 years. With no European success to their name, they sit fourth.

3. Chelsea

31 Major Honours

League Titles (6 times), European Cup (2 times), FA Cup (8 times), League Cup (5 times), Europa League (2 times), Cup Winners Cup (2 times), Uefa Super Cup (2 times), Community Shield (4 times)

Founded in 1905, Chelsea has always been deemed a good footballing club prior to foreign investment in 2003, winning six trophies in seven years before Roman Abramovich’s purchase, it is very hard to call them a small club.

Chelsea has become an English and European powerhouse over the last 20 years. Winning a slew of league titles, FA Cups and League Cups and are the first London club to win the European Cup.

With their recent success in Europe once again, the tide has turned in London between themselves and Arsenal for the biggest team in the capital. Depending on one’s criteria, either club can top the other but with the massive gap in European honours, Chelsea edge it.

2. Liverpool

63 Major Honours

League Titles (19 times), European Cup (6 times), FA Cup (7 times), League Cup (8 times), FIFA Club World Cup (2019), Europa League (3 times), UEFA Super Cup (4 times), Community Shield (15 times)

When you think of consistent success over the past three to four decades, Liverpool will almost certainly come to mind.

The fact that Liverpool only recently won their first league title in over 30 years a year and a half ago and are only one league title behind rivals Manchester United shows how dominant and successful they were during that time.

Holding the title for most European trophies with 14 and with a record of 6 European Cups along with numerous domestic honours, Liverpool is truly a class above the majority of every English club bar one.

Known for their iconic fans, the historically relevant Anfield and club legends, Liverpool is a truly iconic club.

1. Manchester United

66 Major Honours

League Titles (20 times), European Cup (3 times), FA Cup (12 times), League Cup (5 times), FIFA Club World Cup (2008),  Europa League (2017), Intercontinental Cup (1999), Cup Winners Cup (1991), Uefa Super Cup (1991), Community Shield (21 times)

It’s hard to argue that when it comes to the biggest and most well-known club in England and perhaps, the world, Manchester United take the crown and by a fair distance.

United have won the most league titles, second-most for FA Cup triumphs and a plethora of European success, including three historic European Cup victories, with their last being in 2008 in Moscow. With a larger than life fanbase all over the world, United top the list with relative ease.

Besides England, United are on par with the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona, with massive success, numerous legends, a historic stadium, the money and the profile to match, United will be hoping they can get back to the level of success under Sir Alex Ferguson that made them the club they are today.

Manchester United Fan Reaction to Ronaldo-Man City Transfer

The news that Manchester United legend Cristiano Ronaldo is close to making a sensational switch to Manchester City has caused outrage from Manchester United fans who idolized the star during his time at the club from 2003-2009.

Ronaldo (36) is reportedly interested in joining Pep Guardiola in the blue side of Manchester, after telling Juventus he wants to leave.

According to the Express, Ronaldo has already spoken to Pep about the move and where he will fit in.

The Portuguese great had a successful career at Old Trafford, winning three Premier League titles, one Champions League, one FA Cup, two League Cups, one Community Shield, one FIFA Club World Cup and a whole host of individual awards, the pinnacle being the Ballon D’or.

To put it bluntly, United fans have not taken the news well and have expressed themselves in an angry way.

Funny for rival fans, but sheer sadness for those who support the red side of Manchester.

The news has caused outrage with Manchester United fans, who have taken to Twitter to vent the anger and betrayal they could endure if ”Ronny” does swap red for blue.

Manchester United Fan Reaction to Ronaldo-Man City Transfer

Here are some of the best reactions:

Popular Man United fan Mark Goldbridge seems to have taken the news quite well…

It is safe to say Ronaldo is no longer going to be considered the GOAT in the red side of Manchester.

Paddy Power was always going to make this into a high-profile joke in expense of sickened Man United fans.

Man United fans already know what it’s like to lose a high-profile player to the blue half of Manchester, once beloved Carlos Tevez made the switch back in 2009.

That being said, if Ronaldo actually does move to Manchester City, expect fireworks.

England Midfielder Declan Rice has turned down two West Ham contract offers putting Chelsea and Man United on high alert.

Rice is adamant in rejecting any further attempts from West Ham to sign a new deal to stay at the Hammers, with his hope of either Chelsea or Man United placing a bid for him.

West Ham has reportedly offered Rice a bumper pay wise, but the salary offered is much less than he could potentially earn elsewhere.

Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel has named Rice his prefered midfield option this summer, alongside Monaco midfielder Aurélien Tchouameni.

United are big admirers of Rice, who are looking for a suitable central-defensive midfielder, and could offer Jesse Lingard as part of the deal after his successful loan spell last season contributing to nine goals and five assists.

The Hammers have put a price tag of £100 million on Rice, who still has 3 years left on his own current contract with the option for a further year.

The midfielder is keen on listing to any new bids and wants to be informed of any offers for him if they come in during this summers transfer window.

The England international, who is currently a starter for Gareth Southgate’s side at the European Championship, with his performance against Germany in England’s 2-0 Round of 16 victory on Tuesday being a standout.

Team-mate Mason Mount is Rice’s closest friend from their time together at Chelsea’s Academy and has gone on record of wanting to play with the Chelsea Champions League winner in the future.

Former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard was a huge fan of the West Ham captain, and prior to his sacking recommended Rice to the Blues last summer in Chelsea’s massive overhaul of players.

Ever since the start of the Premier League era in the 1992/1993 season, there has been a grand total of seven different winners.

Some teams more than others have dominated since the beginning, other’s have come and gone, while others have risen to prominence in recent years.

But, the question of who is the greatest Premier League side is always up for debate, with a select few teams that can lay claim to the title of the greatest.

With over 28 years of champions, I have narrowed it down to the ten greatest Premier League winning teams.

Note: This list only consists of Premier League achievements, no other competitions will be brought into contention.

Honourable Mentions

Chelsea 16/17

Blackburn 94/95

Arsenal 01/02

Man City 18/19

Man United 93/94

10. Leicester City 15/16 – The Underdogs

The greatest sporting story in history. Leicesters incredible journey to the top of the Premier League summit was the shock of the century. From closely avoiding relegation the season prior and sacking manager Nigel Pearson.

The foxes appointed Italian Claudio Ranieri with zero expectations. Relegation favourites at 5000-1, the side finished clear of second-place Arsenal by ten points. It was a fairytale story like no other, and for that reason, they have to make the list based on that merit.

Points: 81 points

Record: 23-12-3

Title winning margin: 10 points

Goals Scored: 68

Goals Conceded: 36

Goal Difference: +32

Key Players: The whole squad deserves serious amounts of credit but Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez contributing to 59 goals, with Mahrez picking up PFA Player of the Year. While N’Golo Kante was a standout for his tireless performances in the midfield.

Decisive Moment: Winning 1-3 away to Man City in February making them title pretenders to contenders.

9. Chelsea 09/10 – The Double Winners

Carlo Ancelotti guided Chelsea to their first title in three years with some of the best football seen at the capital. The blues finished on 86 points, which is not the greatest of margins but nonetheless, this post-Mourinho Chelsea side is most remembered for breaking record after record.

A record goal difference (at the time), saw Ancelotti’s side beat United to the title by a single point. Bringing panache and flamboyancy to his attacking options. Being the first side in the English top-flight to score 100 or more goals. Scoring more than five goals on six different occasions.

They also won the club’s first league and FA Cup double with a 1-0 win over Portsmouth at Wembley.

Points: 86 points

Record: 27-5-6

Title winning margin: 1 point

Goals Scored: 103

Goals Conceded: 32

Goal Difference: +71

Key Players: Didier Drogba was in sensational form with 42 goal contributions, picking up his second golden boot, while Frank Lampard had his best season to date with 38 goal contributions.

Decisive Moment: Drogba scoring the winner in a 1-2 away win at Old Trafford to send Chelsea ahead of Man United with five games to go.

8. Liverpool 19/20 – The Record Breakers

After not being crowned champions of England in three dry-spell decades, Jurgen Klopp transformed the Merseyside outfit into a juggernaut. Winning 27 of their opening 28 games, drawing one in the process and going on an 18 match winning run was extraordinary.

Claiming their first Premier League title in the fastest time with seven games to spare, if covid didn’t hit, the reds probably would have carried on their consistent run of form. Picking up the second-highest points total only beating Man City the previous season.

Points: 99 points

Record: 32-3-3

Title winning margin: 18 points

Goals Scored: 85

Goals Conceded: 33

Goal Difference: +52

Key Players: Virgil Van Dijk claimed his spot as the best centre-back in the world with his colossus and commanding league performances led Liverpool to their first title in 30 years. Without him, the reds would be nowhere near the team they are, as shown by last season.

Decisive Moment: Chelsea winning 2-1 at Stamford Bridge against champions Manchester City to give Liverpool the title.

7. Chelsea 05/06 – Mourinho’s Title Retainers

Jose Mourinho’s back-to-back title winners never hit the heights or iconic status as its predecessor, but the quality of this Chelsea side cannot be diminished. Boasting another solid defensive unit, their level of consistency was incredible.

At home, they remained unbeaten at home all season, winning 18 out of 19 games at Stamford Bridge. Their only flaw was that they were compared to the first title-winning team the year before.

Points: 91 points

Record: 29-4-5

Title winning margin: 7 points

Goals Scored: 72

Goals Conceded: 22

Goal Difference: +50

Key Players: John Terry and Didier Drogba were influential, but Frank Lampard was the stand-out. The midfielder scoring 16 goals and assisting nine helped Chelsea retain their title.

Decisive Moment: William Gallas’s 90th-minute winner to secure a 2-1 win at home to Tottenham, catapulted the blues further ahead of Man United in the quest for the title. While keeping their unbeaten run vs Spurs in the league to 16 years.

6. Man United 99/00 – Fergie’s third Back-to-Back Titles

The first of many United teams on this list, the 99/00 winning team. Sir Alex Ferguson’s sixth title was one of their most dominating reigns. Winning 28 games and only losing three all season, while remaining unbeaten at home.

While conceding close to 50 goals is no impressive stat, they were poignant up top, with Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke continuing on their treble-winning performances with a combined 46 goal contributions between them.

Points: 91 points

Record: 28-7-3

Title winning margin: 18 points

Goals Scored: 97

Goals Conceded: 45

Goal Difference: +52

Key Players: Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke still sparkled as United’s duo up front, scoring 19 and 20 goals respectively.

Decisive Moment: Roy Keane scoring twice, coming from behind in a 1-2 win in a vital win for the title away at Highbury in a fiery affair.

5. Man United 98/99 – The Treble Winners

Putting the only English side to win an unprecedented treble only fifth will turn a few heads, but based on league accomplishments and form, they are not better than the teams above them. They only won 22 games and drew 13 while only finishing a point above Arsenal.

Not to take anything away from this team, they may not have been as convincing as other United sides but their iconic status will forever be amongst the top echelon of English football.

Points: 79 points

Record: 22-13-3

Title winning margin: 1 point

Goals Scored: 80

Goals Conceded: 37

Goal Difference: +43

Key Players: David Beckham had an iconic season, putting up 17 goal contributions in the league while finishing second, only behind Rivaldo in the World Player of the Year.

Decisive Moment: Coming from behind at home on the final day of the season to defeat Tottenham 2-1 with goals from David Beckham and Andy Cole.

4. Man United 07/08 –  Domestic and European Winners

In my opinion, this United team is their best ever Premier League side. While only finishing two points above second-placed Chelsea, it shows how dominant and masterful they were throughout the season.

Picking up back-to-back titles. This side never matched other achievements from past Ferguson side’s but none could match this squads talent and overall quality. Probably remembered most for the acute ability to salvage last-minute wins, conceding less than 25 goals, United’s back-line was immaculate while their forward line was formidable with the trio of Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez

Points: 87 points

Record: 27-6-5

Title winning margin: 2 points

Goals Scored: 80

Goals Conceded: 22

Goal Difference: +58

Key Players: Cristiano Ronaldo was the focal point of a team full of leaders and excellence. Notching up 38 goal contributions in the league, winning the Ballon D’or, Premier League Golden Boot, PFA and Man United Player of the Year.

Decisive Moment: Winning the league title away at Wigan on the final day of the season in a must-win game with a 0-2 victory.

3. Arsenal 03/04 – The Invincibles

The only team in the Premier League era to go a whole season unbeaten, Arsene Wenger’s invincible side’s remarkable achievement has not been matched as of yet.

At their best, the Gunner’s produced some of (if not) the best football the league has ever produced, bringing ”sexy football” to the equation, while producing a solid back-line that remained unblemished for the whole 38 game season.

Statistically wise, they may not have been that impressive, only winning 26 games, and mostly playing for draws at the end of the season to maintain their quest for immortality, drawing 12 games in total. They did, however, break the 90 point barrier and was Arsenal’s last title triumph. So, they will be remembered fondly.

Points: 90 points

Record: 26-12-0

Title winning margin: 11 points

Goals Scored: 73

Goals Conceded: 26

Goal Difference: +47

Key Players: Thierry Henry was untouchable with an outstanding 30 goals and 9 assists, picking up the golden boot and being awarded PFA and Arsenal Player of the Season.

Decisive Moment: Winning their third Premier League title with a 2-2 draw to North London rivals Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

2. Chelsea 04/05 – The Impenetrable’s

Jose Mourinho arrived as the blues manager under the taking-off point of the Abramovich era. His Chelsea side went on to win their first league title in 50 years, breaking records along the way.

Also conquering Arsenal’s invincible point tally by five points, reaching 95 points and holding the record of the highest points total for over 13 years. They were also close to matching Arsenal’s unbeaten achievement the year prior, only losing one game away at Man City to a Nicolas Anelka penalty.

This season was also the start of an unbeaten home run that lasted four years with an unbeaten run of 86 league games (yet to be matched).

What put this team ahead of other’s was how dominant they were at the back, their impenetrable defensive unit was the main reason behind their success. With a stupidly impressive 25 clean sheets, Petr Cech winning the golden glove in his first season and conceding a mere 15 goals in 38 games is a record that still stands to this day.

Points: 95 points

Record: 29-8-1

Title winning margin: 12 points

Goals Scored: 72

Goals Conceded: 15

Goal Difference: +57

Key Players: John Terry, (PFA Player of the Year) and Frank Lampard (Chelsea Player of the Year), (FWA Footballer of the Year), and (PFA Fans Player of the Year) cleaned up in the individual awards. Their partnership in Chelsea’s strong spine saw The pair also be included in the PFA Team of the Year.

Decisive Moment: Frank Lampard scoring twice to grant Chelsea their first league title in 50 years in a 0-2 victory over Bolton Wanderers.

1. Man City 17/18 – The Centurions

Pep Guardiola’s first season in England was a failure in some regards, with media and pundits questioning has the Spaniard the knowhow and temperant for the Premier League.

By his second time around, any deficiencies were obsolete by the start of the 17/18 season. City was excellent in all aspects, setting countless records as they marched towards the title in a vibrant fashion.

Among the many records they set, including most away points (50), most points ahead of second-place (19), most wins (32), most wins away from home (16), most goals (106), best goal difference (+79) and most wins in a row (18), while beating every team in the league at least once and beating the record for most consecutive wins with 11 victories away from home.

Their crowning achievement, however, was reaching the never done before t accomplishment of reaching 100 points in a single league season. Being the only team in history to do so.

Points: 100 points

Record: 32-4-2

Title winning margin: 19 points

Goals Scored: 106

Goals Conceded: 27

Goal Difference: +79

Key Players: Kevin De Bruyne had his best season at the time with 16 assists and 8 goals to his name, being named in the PFA and UEFA Team of the Year. Only being bested by Mohamed Salah for Player of the Year, who was truly sensational.

Decisive Moment: Gabriel Jesus’s era-defining winner away to Southampton at the last kick of the game to secure the 100-point season.

Spanish champions Atletico Madrid want £43 million pounds to sell Kieran Trippier with Manchester United interested.

The England international is currently at the Euro’s and has two years left on his contract.

The Spanish champions don’t want to let sell the defender but will listen to offers if any club meets their demands.

United are looking to add reinforcements at right-back with Aaron Wan Bissaka in need of competition.

Madrid has not received an offer for the 30-year-old, who won his first title for Diego Simeone’s title-winning campaign.

Man United will look to improve on their defence, with last years acquisition of left-back Alex Telles bringing out the best in Luke Shaw.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is also looking at other alternatives, with Norwich’s highly-rated defender Max Aarons gaining interest from both United and Arsenal.

United are also in the market for a marquee signing. With their much-maligned transfer saga for Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho still up in the air.

Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton is on the verge of signing for United subsequent to medical and personal terms. He is set to sign a deal until 2023.

Jamie Carragher, Roy Keane and Gary Neville give their views on whether Manchester United should be selling Paul Pogba.

Roy Keane was adamant he should be sold

“If it’s not right for the club and people are almost laughing at you, these agents, let these lads go,” he told Sky Sports News.

“Look at the bigger picture. We’re talking about a great club like Manchester United. Don’t go chasing after these agents and these players who, I think, the bottom line, don’t really want to be at the club.

“The agents don’t want them to be there, I don’t think Pogba wants to be there. Just shake hands and say, ‘Off you go’. He’ll go this summer. He’ll go in the summer, 100%.”
