Andy McEntee will see out the final year of his current contract with Meath after surviving a vote on his position as manager of the county’s senior footballers.

The vote took place at a county board meeting and was held in secret after the Meath executive recommended that the incumbent’s term with the side not be extended.

The executive had voted 8-7 in favour of letting the former Meath minor manager go but the clubs rejected the recommendation put forward.

LMFM Radio reported that the management committee did not receive the two-thirds majority it needed and that the Yes votes outweighed the no votes.

46 voted in favour of retaining McEntee for another year while 27 agreed with the committee. There was one spoiled vote.

The former Ballyboden St Enda’s manager has been at the helm of his native county’s senior side since 2016 and has taken them to Division One as well as two Leinster finals.

However, the county are yet to win a Leinster title since 2010 and have struggled to bridge the gap between themselves and Dublin on several occasions.

The Royals exited the Leinster Senior Football Championship at the semi-final stage this year after losing to Dublin by three points in a loss that also marked the end of their All-Ireland Senior Football Championship campaign.

Their second-half performance in the match was hailed by many as they came close to stopping Dublin, who won their 11th Delaney Cup in a row this year before eventually falling short to All-Ireland finalists Mayo.

Meath GAA announced the news on social media after the meeting had taken place: “The Meath G.A.A. County Committee has decided to endorse Andy McEntee as the County Senior Football Manager for 2022.

“Andy McEntee will now complete his three-year term and we are excited for the new year of Gaelic games to come.”

Andy McEntee’s time as Meath manager looks set to end after the executive of the county board voted against keeping McEntee for a seventh year since taking the job.

McEntee has been in charge of the Royals since 2016 and had agreed to a three-year contract in 2019, which was subject to review after two years.

The Meath Chronicle have reported that the executive voted eight/seven against McEntee staying on for the final year of his current contract.

Clubs will now vote on the decision but there is no date for a full county board meeting yet and the executive’s lack of faith in the former Meath minor football manager may prove damning.

McEntee succeeded Mick O’Dowd in the senior managerial role and took his side to two Leinster Senior Football Championship finals in back-to-back years (2019 and 2020).

The county reached Division One of the National Football League in 2019 but suffered a two-point loss to Donegal in the Division Two final.

However, the side only lasted one season at the top of the league pyramid, returning to Division Two for 2021 following a winless season in the top tier.

This year, Meath missed out on promotion after a three-point defeat to Kildare and failed to reach the Leinster final, despite a strong second-half against Dublin in the semi-final.

McEntee’s team were 11 points down at half-time to the then All-Ireland champions but had reduced the deficit to three by the final whistle.

Liam Byrne’s appearance against Mayo in the league in May made him the 75th player to play for the county under McEntee.

The inter-county manager previously led the Royals’ minors to the All-Ireland minor football final in 2012 and had managed Dublin club Ballyboden St. Enda’s when they won the All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship in 2016 before taking the senior job with his native county.

The Meath minor footballers have won the 2021 All-Ireland Minor Football Championship after a one-point victory over Tyrone.

Meath wing-forward Shaun Leonard wriggled into space to fire over the winning point in the final minutes of the game to give his county a first minor football crown since 1992.

Tyrone’s strong start was not maintained and the Leinster champions fought back to take the minor crown after a huge battle in Croke Park.

Several wides cost the Ulster champions as they failed to pull away from Cathal O Bric’s side.

The teams were tied eight times throughout the biggest match on the minor football calendar before Leonard sealed the win for the Royals.

Tyrone captain Cormac Devlin found the net in the eighth minute to give his side a four-point lead.

However, O Bric’s side responded well and the two teams were level at 1-04 just six minutes after Devlin’s opening goal.

Meath had the lead after the first half – a slender one-point margin in their favour.

The Royals increased their lead to three after substitute Conor Owens had tied things up at 1-08 a piece.

Oisin O Murchu scored his final point of the game in that stretch to bring his total to 1-02 in the game – the most of any Meath player.

Owens was involved in the final Tyrone stretch of point-scoring alongside Ruairi McHugh and Ronan Cassidy but the sub could not help his side force extra time after Leonard’s winning strike.

Meath ended a 29-year-wait for a minor football title while the 11-year wait for the Red Hand will go on.

Gerard Donnelly’s side scored 53 points en route to this year’s final and won the Ulster final by seven points.

Their semi-final win over Cork saw the side outscore the Munster champions by 14 to book a date with Meath.

They came in as favourites but Meath had other plans.

The Tyrone minor footballers booked their place in the 2021 All-Ireland minor football championship final with an emphatic 0-23 to 1-06 win over Munster champions Cork on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Hand dominated affairs and cruised to a 14-point victory at Bord na Móna O’Connor Park in Tullamore.

Cork were hoping to add an All-Ireland final in minor football to their impressive year in hurling but it was not to be.

Tyrone’s attack was on fire once again throughout the game with the county’s defence also being impressive – a trait commonplace in Tyrone football across the board this year.

Full-forward Eoin McElholm led the way on the scoring charts for the Ulster champions and opened the scoring in the game after captain Cormac Devlin found him in space.

Tyrone midfielder Ruairi McHugh showed his strength early on, winning a free for the side who were already two points up.

The Cork minors got on the scoreboard nine minutes into the game after Ronan Cassidy slotted home a free from range.

However, Gerard Donnelly’s side had already found their rhythm and continued to enlarge the gulf between the two sides.

His players left the pitch at half-time with a seven-point lead to their name after they held Cork to a mere three points in the half.

Cork goalkeeper Daniel Walsh kept the best attack in minor football at bay for as long as he could but his side could not close the gap.

Tyrone were constantly pressing and retaining possession after their missed chances and were an unrelenting force throughout the match.

Walsh was able to deny the Red Hand a goal but their 23 points show the quality this side has in attack.

Cork got a goal late in the game courtesy of Dylan Crowley but they were already down by twelve points at that stage so it was a mere consolaton.

Tyrone will now face Meath in the All-Ireland MFC final in next weekend’s decider after the latter beat Connacht champions Sligo by five points.
