Ushba Tesoro capped a  memorable night for Japan by finishing strongest in the 27th Dubai World Cup (2000m) at Meydan on Saturday.

The six-year-old son of Orfevre scored by a widening two-and-three-quarter lengths from local hope Algiers and Saudi Arabian-trained Emblem Road in third.

Ushba Tesoro is trained by Noboru Takagi for Ryotokuji Kenji Holdings and was ridden by Yuga Kawada.

It was a race where the picture changed markedly in the final two furlongs. As the field turned into the home stretch, Algiers was travelling with ease and as he assumed the lead with a furlong and a half to race.

However, about five lengths further back, jockey Yuga Kawada was unfurling a lethal burst from Ushba Tesoro who he had settled at the rear of the field before making his move out wide with 3 furlongs to race. The winner had actually trailed the field in rear by 15 lengths in the very early stages of the race.

Winning trainer Takagi said the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, still the one race Japan has yet to conquer and the one it covets most, will come under consideration later in the year, all going well.

The draw for the Dubai World Cup had placed three of the main fancies – Country Grammer, Algiers and Panthalassa – out wide and the latter could never dominate the way he did when landing the Saudi Cup a month ago. He tired to finish well beaten in 10th. Last year’s hero Country Grammer was always a bit laboured and ran seventh.

Despite the dominance by Japan in the world’s biggest races in recent years, it was their only success in the $12 million feature since Victoire Pisa broke through in 2011. It was also their first on dirt, with Victoire Pisa’s success coming on the synthetic Tapeta surface.

Sibelius gave US-based Irishman Jerry O’Dwyer the biggest win of his career when winning the Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen at Meydan on Saturday.

The US born, bred and trained Sibelius, under jockey Ryan Moore, got the better of last year’s winner Switzerland at the line by a nose.

Deep into the straight it looked as if the finish would be an all-American one, fought out between Frankie Dettori on Hopkins and Tyler Gaffalione on Gunite.

But the race changed at the 200 metre pole, with Switzerland launched down the outside by Irish jockey Tadhg O’Shea and Ryan Moore moving up on the rail.

Jerry O’Dwyer said of his biggest training success to date:

“The race worked out quite the way I had predicted. You know you can read these races a hundred times but it will never go the same way. To be honest, he just sat back in the gates and was a bit slow but when you have a master rider like Ryan Moore, he gets you out of trouble.

“It really is a proud moment for us. I am grateful to the owners. They let me do what is best with the horse every step of the way and never interfere.

“He trains like a good horse, he acts like a good horse, he rides like a good horse.

Winning jockey Ryan Moore, who had earlier won the Dubai Gold Cup aboard Broome for Aidan O’Brien, spoke of his Group 1 delight with Sibelius:

“I was very lucky to pick up the ride. He actually stepped a little slowly, I was a half-length further behind than I wanted to be. We had a charmed run, they just drifted off which meant we didn’t have to change lanes and the horse dug in really deep. He showed a lot of courage and heart to get there.

“He has form over a little bit further which I think really helped too.”

Broome (9/1) has won the Group 2 Dubai Gold Cup for Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore.

The son of Australia travelled well throughout the race before making his move in the home straight.

Finding a nice break between horses, the seven-year-old came under a great wide drive from Ryan Moore to claim the 2 mile contest.

MV Magnier, representing owners Coolmore, said:

“Aidan (O’Brien) was very confident he would handle the trip. He’s danced every dance and travelled around the world. We are lucky to have him.”

Broome, who has previously run in Qatar, Hong Kong, Japan, USA, France, England, as well as Ireland, was winning for the first time since his Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes victory at Royal Ascot last June.

The 2/1f Siskany was runner-up for Charlie Appleby and William Buick, a neck behind the Ballydoyle winner, while Irish jockey Joe Fanning was third aboard the the Charlie Johnstone-trained Subjectivist (10/1).

Winning rider Ryan Moore said of his Dubai Gold Cup winner:

“He’s a very brave horse. He’s a Group 1 winner, he’s got high class form. The pace was strong and we just had to wait for a bit of room at the top of the straight. He’s so brave, though, he puts his head down and he gave me everything. It’s a pleasure to ride a horse like him.

“He’s done a lot of racing and he always runs his race, but you’re never quite sure how they will handle a step up in distance until they come out and do it. It’s one of the biggest nights of the year, I’m always delighted to come out here. It’s always tough to get a winner so I’m delighted to get one tonight.”

The 2022-23 Meydan racing season will commence on Friday, 4 November 2022. It will be the first of 21 fixtures at the UAE’s premier racetrack.

Action at Meydan Racecourse will culminate in the 2023 edition of the $30.5 million Dubai World Cup meeting on Saturday, 25 March.

The 20th edition of the Dubai World Cup Carnival, which brings together horses, trainers and jockeys from all over the world, gets underway on Friday, 6 January.

An enhanced Carnival programme, with prizemoney totalling more than $7.5 million, will take place at Meydan Racecourse between January and March, culminating in ‘Super Saturday’ – the official dress rehearsal for the Dubai World Cup – on 4 March.

Established in 2004, the Carnival will feature several new races, including the $150,000 Thunder Snow Challenge, over 2000 metres on dirt. Another addition is the $150,000 Ipi Tombe Stakes, for fillies and mares on turf over 1,400 metres, which honours the Zimbabwe-bred mare who won the Dubai Duty Free tournament in 2003.

In total, there are 21 Group races for Thoroughbreds. Purebred Arabians have their share of the action, too, with a new race, the UAE Arabian Sprint Championship. The rest of the Arabian races have Group status, including three Group 1 legs of the Maktoum Challenge series.

The 2023 Carnival will also provide opportunities for handicappers, with 20 handicaps, divided between dirt and turf, complementing the pattern races and worth a minimum of $75,000 each. Meanwhile, the Jumeirah Turf Series for three-year-olds returns for a second season. Last year’s Jumeirah Derby winner, Nations Pride, went on to run in the G1 Cazoo Derby at Epsom in June.

Corkman David O’Meara saw Lord Glitters collect a third Meydan Racecourse win in the Group 2 Singspiel Stakes.

The great grey made a minor piece of history in becoming the first horse to win back-to-back renewals of the 1,800 metre turf contest, coming from the back of the field in trademark style to secure the win under regular rider Danny Tudhope.

Only fourth in the Group 2 Al Rashidiya on his 2022 debut, trainer David O’Meara felt that Lord Glitters would improve for that run and he was right; the nine-year-old was a length too good for Royal Fleet and old foe Zakouski.

Lord Glitters’ success was the first of this year’s Carnival for a horse trained in Britain, but it nearly came four races earlier when Alignak was just beaten in the Race Of Future Handicap, over 2,410 metres on turf. Trained by Jamie Osborne and ridden by his daughter Saffie, the grey came with a storming run but couldn’t quite get to Godolphin’s Global Storm, who hung on by a length under William Buick.

The Dubai World Cup Organising Committee has announced the cancellation of this year’s Dubai World Cup meeting at Meydan Racecourse, scheduled for Saturday 28th March, due to the ongoing health implications of the coronavirus and precautionary measures being implemented by the UAE government.

In a statement from Saeed Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board & CEO of Meydan Group LLC, the reason for cancelling the 25th running of the $35 million Dubai World Cup was explained:

“Due to the ongoing global health implications of the coronavirus (COVID-19) and precautionary measures being implemented by the UAE government, the organising committee regrets to announce the cancellation of the Dubai World Cup 2020 meeting at Meydan Racecourse on Saturday, March 28.”

The Dubai World Cup meeting, which was first held in 1996, comprises nine races worth a cumulative purse of $35 million.
