Paul ‘Redser’ Redmond has confirmed his retirement from mixed-martial-arts on his social media channels after a professional career spanning a decade.

Redmond ends his career with a 15-8 record spread across multiple organisations including the UFC and Bellator.

He is one of a long list of Irish Cage Warriors veterans, fighting eight times on the organisation’s cards.

The 35-year-old once fought for the vacant BAMMA Lightweight Championship, suffering a majority decision defeat to Norman Parke.

The Irish MMA fighter was part of the national surge in the sport in the early-to-mid-2010s, spearheaded by former UFC Featherweight and Lightweight champion Conor McGregor.

His most recent fight came at Bellator 240 in February 2020 against Georgi Karakanyan – Redmond lost the fight via guillotine choke in round two.

Redser’s statement on his decision to put the gloves down is as follows: “I was just gonna fade off into the background and not mention it but alot of people keep asking me “when am I out again next” & I always say ah soon etc. Etc.

“But the truth is your probably not going to see me do my thing in an mma cage again.

“I’ve thought long and hard about this, talked to the big lad @coach_andyryan_ my family etc. & I think now is a good a time as ever to step away from MMA.

“25 pro fights, a full amateur career, but the injuries are starting to mount up every fight camp and I haven’t made the last 2 fights because of them.

Along with other stuff I have going on in my life with work etc. The time to put into fight camps the way I used to and fight the way I do isn’t there.

“Also losing the love of it and financially it not making sense there’s nothing I have left to give the sport.

“If it wasn’t for the big lad @coach_andyryan_ I’d still be kicking rocks the man pushed me to heights I never knew existed & I’ll be forever grateful.

“I never made the biggest impact in mma but I never said no to ANYONE & always fought whoever they put in front of me on a day, week, months notice….think anyone who came to see me fight knew what they were getting and enjoyed it, to all my teammates, training partners, & friends I’ve met throughout the years you’ve made the last 13 years unforgettable so thanks for the memories.

“Redser ✌🏼

Sinead Kavanagh will fly the Irish flag in a Bellator title fight for the second consecutive event when she takes on legendary featherweight Cris Cyborg at Bellator 271 in Florida.

Kavanagh will aim to end an up-and-down period for Irish mixed-martial-arts with a victory over the veteran Brazilian.

Regardless of whether she achieves this, the fighter will go down in history as the first Irish MMA fighter to compete for a belt in the organisation.

Ciaran Clarke and Danni Nielan earned wins at last week’s Bellator 270 event at the 3Arena in Dublin but their successes were outweighed by those that fell short.

Peter Queally’s title fight loss in the main event to Patricky Pitbull, James Gallagher’s submission defeat to Patchy Mix and Stephen Costello’s first professional fight ending with a 1 in the loss column.

However, Ian Garry’s UFC debut at Madison Square Garden ended in a flash knockout before the first round was up that gave fans a glimpse into what he is capable of after a shaky start to the fight.

Kavanagh will look to add to Garry’s high and take home the Bellator Women’s Featherweight title by beating Cyborg, who has only lost twice in her professional MMA career.

Her debut fight with Erica Paes ended in defeat and her UFC Featherweight crown was taken by Amanda Nunes.

Cyborg’s opponent on Friday night, who trains with SBG Ireland, has the task of doing what has only been done twice in 16 years.

The 35-year-old Inchicore-born fighter comes into the biggest bout of her life with a two-fight win-streak under her belt.

However, previous to this streak, she suffered losses to Arlene Blencowe, who also appears on the card and Leslie Smith in a 1-4 run.

The named fighters above suffered successive defeats at the hands of the current Featherweight queen in Cyborg’s most recent title defences.

Kavanagh will have to produce the performance of a lifetime to shock the world and shape her legacy, with the odds stacked in her favour.

The next challenger for the belt may be on this card – Blencowe opens the main card of Bellator 271 with a bout against Pam Sorensen.

Sinead Kavanagh is prepared for the biggest fight of her mixed-martial-arts career when she faces Cris Cyborg for the Bellator Women’s Featherweight title on Friday evening at Bellator 271.

Kavanagh’s quest for gold will potentially reach its final boss just a week after SBG Ireland teammate Peter Queally was stopped by Patricky Pitbull in Dublin.

The challenger, who is on a two-fight win streak, comes into the fight with confidence in her training and her abilities.

“[I feel] good, everything’s perfect,” the featherweight said. “I’m feeling strong. You can’t doubt this week like, it’s been a great week. I’ve seen her and I’m not afraid.”

Cris Cyborg is seen as one of the greatest women’s mixed-martial artists of all time and has held the Bellator featherweight title since winning it on her debut in the organisation.

She followed up her title win over Julia Budd with victories against Arlene Blencowe and Leslie Smith and will now entertain the Dubliner in Florida.

Kavanagh has lost half of her eight fights in the organisation, with losses to Blencowe and Smith on her record but her latest streak has earned her the chance of a lifetime

However, Cyborg is a heavy 1/20 favourite to defend her latest belt for a third time with a win over Kavanagh, who says the veteran’s mind games have already started.

“You won’t believe what they’re up to. They’re up there tagging me in that suplex. We’re out running, she’s in her sweat gear.

“Two o’clock in the afternoon like, blistering heat in that sweat gear like, and they’re running and then me and me missus are walking past and video cameraing and stuff like that.

Kavanagh also revealed that Cyborg has been using cards based on the hit Netflix show ‘Squid Game’ in an attempt to intimidate her.

“She has these cards, these squid game cards with her face on it and she’s leaving them everywhere I go like – leaving them in me corner, leaving them on me floor like.

“She’s trying to play mind games, she’s trying to break me but she can’t like – that’s what she does to her opponents.”

Cris Cyborg and Sinead Kavanagh will battle it out for the belt in the main event of Bellator 271 – the main card is set to begin at 3 am GMT.

Bellator 270 has lost a fight after Junior Morgan suffered an injury last night, meaning his preliminary card feathweight bout with Darragh Kelly is off just hours from the start of the event.

Irishman Darragh Kelly was set to make his professional debut on Friday evening in front of home fans at the 3Arena against Morgan.

Kelly was seen as the favourite for the now-cancelled fight by bookmakers and was one of two Irish debutants on the card.

The 23-year-old who trains with SBG Ireland was Clan Wars featherweight champion as an amateur and is yet to be beaten in a mixed-martial-arts fight.

His injured opposite, Morgan, is currently 3-0 in his professional career but had a patchy amateur record, losing his last fight before he went pro.

Morgan was set to fight for the first time in 26 months against Kelly in his Bellator debut this evening but will have to wait a few months more before he returns to the cage.

The other Irish debutant on the card, Stephen Costello, is still on track to walk out for the first time as a professional in front of an Irish crowd – Costello is one of five Irish fighters on the card.

Costello will fight British debutant Yusuf Nazokatov who trains with Manchester Top Team – a gym that has fighters such as former UFC Heavyweight and interim Heavyweight champion Frank Mir, Lerone Murphy and Jordan Barton – Barton fights on the same card against Ciaran Clarke.

The Bellator 270 main event sees Peter Queally take on Patricky Pitbull for the vacant lightweight championship.

The Waterford native will look to settle the score with Patricky, who he beat earlier in the year at Bellator 258 when the doctor intervened after Pitbull was cut by the Irishman.

“It’s just a dream come true,” the 34-year-old said at Wednesday’s pre-fight press conference. “It’s 12/13 years of work that’s finally coming to fruition. I’m very, very proud of myself – that’s all I can say about it. I’m just very, very proud of myself to have got here.”

Irish mixed-martial artist Ian ‘The Future’ Garry (7-0) will achieve his goal of fighting in the UFC by the age of 23 when he takes on Jordan ‘Bomaye’ Williams (9-5 1NC, 0-2 UFC) at UFC 268 on Saturday, November 6.

Garry enters the UFC as the former Cage Warriors welterweight champion with an 11-fight win streak, seven of those coming since he turned professional.

Two-and-a-half years after making his pro debut, The Future will step into the octagon in front of fans on one of the most anticipated cards of the year.

“I’ve been saying since I started MMA – I wanted to have fought by 19, made my pro debut by 21 and I wanted to fight in the UFC by the time I’m 23.”

The Irishman will get his wish with 11 days to spare as he turns 24 on November 17 and he is preparing to do so with Sanford MMA after moving to America after getting his UFC contract.

The Florida-based gym has fighters such as Robbie Lawler, Gilbert Burns and Ian Heinisch on the roster.

The latter had a sparring session with Garry that led him to get a cut above his eye previous to the interview after he had grazed the cage.

The unbeaten fighter praised his new gym, describing it as an “absolutely insane” place to get to train at.

“It’s a mat full of elite, world-class talent and it’s a blessing to be able to step onto the mats and learn from coaches and teammates of that calibre.”

Heinisch, along with Impa Kasanganay and Phil Hawes have been training with the 23-year-old ahead of his Stateside debut

The prospect is working under gym founders Henri Hooft and Greg Jones, as well as Jason Strout, all three of whom will corner him for the fight.

He relishes the opportunity to make his UFC debut in front of fans after the onset of the pandemic in March 2020 led to him missing out on that experience in his last four fights.

“268 is going to be the fight that I’m going to enjoy,” Garry exclaimed. “All the hard work that I put in in the last four years to get to where I am, has been an accumulation of hard work, dedication, sacrifice, all for like this moment, all for this fight…

“…Now I’ve got to go in there – fight, have fun, put on a show – and show people why I’m this f**king good, why I’ve got this hype, why people are talking about me being ‘the next Conor McGregor.’ – why people are saying I’m the next big thing in MMA.”

The fight comes less than five months after his friend, now CW featherweight king Paul Hughes was in his corner on short notice for Garry’s win over Jack Grant to earn his belt at 170 lbs.

He was kicked out of his previous gym, Team KF Martial Arts in Swords, a week out from his bout with Grant “after repeated warnings regarding his behaviour to other teammates and his coaches,” according to a statement from his former gym.

Garry’s point-of-view on the split is seen in the Curly Top documentary ‘Ian Garry: The Future’ which follows the mixed-martial artist in the build-up to his title bout.

“I had a lot of people behind me and a lot of people who wanted to be there for me, who supported me, and that’s what matters is that there are people out there that support you and no matter what you do, you’ll always find someone to have your back.”

The victory over Jack Grant proved to be the final fight for the 7-0 fighter in Cage Warriors as the UFC came calling right after he got gold around his waist.

The UFC deal has helped put Irish MMA in the spotlight it was once in – on top of Garry, Peter Queally and Sinead Kavanagh are fighting for titles at Bellator while Hughes and Joe McColgan already hold them at Cage Warriors.

He is aiming to join the likes of Conor McGregor, Michael Bisping and Joanna Jędrzejczyk on the list of fighters from the Irish-owned promotion to become UFC champions, having already joined the long list of those who have made the switch to the American promotion.

“I think it’s pretty obvious how good [Cage Warriors] are and what they do…I mean they’re absolutely sensational at what they do and they deserve all the praise.

“The fact that they got to put on shows during the pandemic and enabled us to continue our careers in fighting and show off our skill sets, while the world was shut down is massive.

“They’re an amazing organisation – Graham [Boylan] and Ian [Dean] work their asses off. It was a pleasure to be part of that organisation and be a part of their lineage and their history and now it’s time to go on and set my legacy in the UFC.”

Bellator lightweights Brent Primus and Benson Henderson are unhappy that Patricky ‘Pitbull’ Freire and Irish mixed-martial artist Peter Queally’s fight has been upgraded to a title fight after Patricky’s brother, Patricio, vacated the division’s belt.

Primus and Henderson are set to go head-to-head in the ring on Saturday night at Bellator 268 in Phoenix, Arizona.

Patricky Pitbull and Queally will fight for the vacant lightweight championship in the main event of Bellator 270 at the 3Arena in Dublin on Friday, November 5.

The fight is a rematch of May’s Bellator 258 match-up, which the Irishman won due to a doctor’s stoppage.

Primus was the most vocal of the two about the issue and did not mince his words when asked about it at the pre-fight press conference on Thursday.

“Yeah, that’s a complete joke, I cannot believe it,” the 36-year-old said. Queally has fought twice in like three-and-a-half years, Patricky’s coming off two losses – I think it’s a joke.

Queally has only fought three times in two years since joining the Bellator ranks and can win the title if he wins his fourth.

Primus took aim at the man set to fight for the title in front of his home fans and criticised his injury record.

‘The Showstopper’ has pulled out of two bouts due to injury since signing for Scott Coker’s organisation, one of them being a match-up with Primus.

A third scheduled fight did not make it to fight day due to Covid – the initial date for the first clash between Patricky and Queally.

“I’m gonna go out and make a statement with Benson and I’m gonna call out whoever wins that fight, if Patricky or if Queally doesn’t get injured – that guy backs out of a lot of fights.

“I was supposed to fight him – he backed out like three weeks before the fight so, yeah man, it’s a complete joke for sure and I’m gonna smash whoever wins that fight.”

MMA legend Henderson kept his response to the same question to a minimum: “No comment. If you don’t got nothing nice to say, don’t say nothing.”

Peter Queally’s Bellator 270 main event fight against Patricky ‘Pitbull’ Freire at the 3 Arena in Dublin has been upgraded to a title fight after Patricky’s brother, Patricio, vacated the lightweight belt.

The news was announced by Bellator CEO Scott Coker on ‘The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani’, which was live-streamed on YouTube on Wednesday.

The event takes place on Friday, November 5 with tickets currently available for the card – the full card will be aired live on Virgin Media Two.

Patricio, who is also nicknamed Pitbull, made the decision so that his brother could fight for the belt.

His recent loss to AJ McKee in Bellator’s Featherweight Grand Prix final, in which he lost the belt at 145 lbs was also a factor in his decision.

“If I lost at 145 pounds, I can’t be the champion at 155,” Patricio stated on The MMA Hour.

“The other side, I have my brother as No. 1 contender. If he keeps winning, he’s gonna fight for the belt and I’m not gonna fight my brother.”

Queally and Patricky will fight for the second time when they step into the circular cage in search of the lightweight belt.

Queally won their first fight in May at Bellator 258 via a doctor’s stoppage in the second round.

‘The Showstopper’ also beat Ryan Scope at Bellator 227 back in September 2019 and will earn the belt in the division if he wins a third fight in a row – a streak he has only put together once before but never at Bellator.

Scott Coker broke the news on ‘The MMA Hour’: “I think it’s the first time we’ve had a title fight in Ireland for Bellator so I think it’s going to be a big deal and these guys deserve it…we were just asking [Patricio] ‘what do you want to do next?’ and this conversation came into his thoughts and I said ‘ok, well then, we’ll fulfil your wishes and here we are.

“Now we have a great main event and the Gallagher-Mix [fight] will be the semi-main event so we have a great 1-2 punch in Ireland.”

Cage Warriors 128 sees a rivalry reach its peak on Friday night when Irishman Paul Hughes and Morgan Charrière face-off in the cage for the interim featherweight belt.

The fight headlines the second card in the fifth Cage Warriors trilogy series, which also includes Cage Warriors 127 and 129.

Thursday night’s card saw Dominique Wooding win the vacant bantamweight title in a comeback victory over 6-0 Nathan Fletcher.

Both fighters have lost to current featherweight king Jordan Vucenic in recent memory and will battle for their right to a rematch.

Vucenic was meant to fight the Frenchman a second time in June for his first title defence but injury brought an end to those plans.

As Vucenic recovers, Fight Academy Ireland prospect Hughes has been granted the opportunity to defeat ‘The Last Pirate’ and earn a shot at his first-ever championship belt.

Charrière has said that he does not care about the interim belt or the opponent he has to face and is just focused on ensuring that the division’s belt returns to him.

The 24-year-old Derry native is who currently stands in the Frenchman’s way of doing so, with Vucenic keeping a keen eye on the fight from afar.

The co-main event sees Greek fighter Ioannis Palaiologos take on Jesse Urholin in the Welterweight division.

The unbeaten Finn is ranked third in the division and will welcome the EFL Martial Arts Academy to Cage Warriors.

Fights between Adam Amarasinghe and Michele Martignoni, and Gerardo Fanny and Liam Gittins round off the main card.

Irish mixed-martial artist James Sheehan will take part in a welterweight bout on the preliminary card, fighting the unbeaten Omiel Brown.

Cage Warriors 127 is the first event in the promotion’s fifth trilogy series and the card takes place on Thursday night.

Dominique Wooding and Nathan Fletcher will go to battle to crown a new bantamweight champion in the main event.

Wooding comes into the fight in patchy form, with two wins and two losses in his last four fights – both of those losses came by unanimous decision in his final Bellator fights.

However, Wooding has had a bright start to life at Cage Warriors, beating Cameron Hardy at Cage Warriors 124 to earn the opportunity to fight for the belt at 135 lbs.

The card will be held at the York Hall Leisure Centre in London and ‘Black Panther; will hope that the belt remains in the city after the fight.

Nathan Fletcher is the 25-year-old’s unbeaten opponent, with a 6-0 record to his name.

Fletcher is a known submission artist, choking out five of his six opponents on the road to the bantamweight title bout.

His performances as an amateur on the undercard of Cage Warriors events showcased this ability and on Thursday night, he will get to display them in the promotion’s biggest bantamweight fight of the year.

Nathan trains at Next Gen, the gym where UFC stars Molly McCann and Paddy Pimblett hail from, and he will be looking to follow in their footsteps and become a Cage Warriors champion.

In the co-main event, Kurban Khriziev and Josh Reed will meet in a catchweight bout after both men missed the mark of the originally agreed upon 135lbs.

However, they came to a gentleman’s agreement and the fight stays on the card as the third catchweight bout of the event.

Rory Evans and Weslley Maia agreed to a catchweight bout earlier this week and Adam Wilson and Kingsley Crawford will open the main card with one.

Irishman Ryan Shelley will kick-off the action at 8:15 pm when he faces Liam Molloy in his second professional MMA fight.

The main card will begin at 9 pm.

Ready for Round 3? As Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz rejuvenate feud on Twitter

Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz rejuvenated their long-lasting feud after a series of back and forth tweets between the rivals took over MMA Twitter last night. Their two fights in 2016 were some of the greatest in UFC history.

Diaz defeated the two-weight world champion back at UFC 196 via submission in March 2016, with McGregor avenging his loss to Diaz at UFC 202 with a majority decision victory in August 2016.

Both men have lost their last two fights, with McGregor breaking his leg in his trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier in July.

Nate Diaz lost to Leon Edwards back in June that saw him outclassed before stunning the British fighter in the closing minutes in what was almost a shock victory for the Stockton native upon his return to the octagon after his loss to Jorge Masvidal back in 2019.

However, last night, the pair were involved in a mouthwatering piece of trash talk after the Irishman reignited the feud after tweeting a photo of the two facing off prior to their second fight, with the caption ”Now add 30lb of muscle on to me and say ‘ding, ding’ in a Dublin accent.

After the post, Diaz responded by questioning McGregors motivation to trash talk after back-to-back losses and a broken leg sustained against Dustin Poirier.
