The FAI Women’s Cup final is set to be played on Sunday, November 21st, the Irish governing body for association football have announced.

This year’s showpiece event will be held at Tallaght Stadium with kick-off set for 5:30 pm.

While a big crowd is expected on the day, the game will also be broadcast live on RTÉ2.

The semi-finals are set for the week ending October 10th with current Cup holders Peamount United paired with 2018 and 2019 champions Wexford Youths, while Shelbourne will take on Galway WFC.

The four sides earned their spots in this year’s semi-finals after wins over Treaty United, Athlone Town, Cork City and DLR Waves respectively.

Peamount United took down Shelbourne and Wexford in their run to the cup final last year, where they dispatched of Cork City in a six-goal rout to take their second FAI Women’s Cup.

Their victory over Cork ended a decade-long drought in the competition and the side are favourites to retain their crown this season.

Peamount also lead the Women’s National League currently with Shelbourne and Wexford in second and third and Galway in fifth.

Wexford will be looking to get revenge on the holders for their 1-0 semi-final loss last November and move one step closer to winning a third cup in four years.

Shelbourne are searching for their first piece in silverware in four years and will look to end the wait with a win in Tallaght in November.

They face Galway, who won the competition in 2007 under the name Galway Ladies League.

The county league has since become a feeder for Galway WFC, who are still on course for their second FAI Women’s Cup victory.

Shelbourne will host Galway at Tolka Park while Wexford Youths will make the journey to Greenogue to play rivals Peamount United for a spot in the final.

The European dream is over for Peamount United as they lost 5-2 to Spartak Subotica in their UEFA Women’s Champions League Qualifier.

Four goals from playmaker Tijana Filipovic and one from Alice Kusi ensured a Serbian win. They will meet either FC Twente or Nike Tbilisi on Saturday for a chance to reach Round 2.

The only consolation came from Eleanor Ryan-Doyle’s late brace. It started with a beautifully struck free-kick on 72 minutes. She then rolled the ball in on 89 minutes after beating the goalkeeper to a long pass, but it was only a consolation for the Irish side.

The game was played at the Sportclub Enschede, Netherlands, as part of a new format in the competition that sees one team host a mini tournament. Peamount will play the losing team from the other game before returning to Dublin.

Three goals from Filipovic in first half

Filipovic, considered one of the rising stars in women’s football, fired a long-range strike past goalkeeper Naoisha McAloon after only nine minutes.

Peamount had started well and constructed some nice passing moves, but the clear difference at this level is creating chances and finishing them.

The 22-year-old Filipovic had added two more goals to her tally by the half-time whistle.

Peamount never got to truly test goalkeeper Milica Kostic and spent much of their energy trying to stay toe to toe with a very good opponent.

Filipovic added her fourth goal on 54 minutes before Kusi put them five up just past the hour mark. It was deflating for the current SSE Airtricity Women’s National League leaders to find themselves in this position.

James O’Callaghan’s squad battled hard in the final 30 minutes as the two Ryan-Doyle goals gave a respectable look to the scoreboard.

Teams

Peamount United: McAloon; O’Callaghan, Duggan, Ruddy, Beirne; O’Gorman, Doyle (Smyth-Lynch 85), Gorman, Kelly (McCartan 62); Ryan-Doyle; Roche (McEvoy 57).

Spartak Subtoica: Kostic; Baltrip-Reyes, Slovic, Jackmon; Kusi (Saric 73), Stupar, Fielder, Milivojevic, Frajtovic (Nad 72); Filipovic (Ilic 83); Owusu Ansah (Ciric 62).

Referee: Ana Maria Alexandra Terteleac (Romania).

Peamount United won the 2020 Women’s National League title by 3-1 against Shelbourne at PRL Park.

Áine O’Gorman scored twice and Karen Duggan got one as they fought back from Emily Whelan’s opener for Shels to successfully defend their title.

In front of Republic of Ireland Women’s National Team Manager Vera Pauw, it was a tight first half with few goalscoring opportunities created as victory for either team would have seen them crowned as League winners.

Shels take the lead

Less than a minute into the second half Whelan scored, despite goalkeeper Niamh Reid-Burke getting a hand to it. Shels celebrated as Peamount were left stunned.

The game started to open up after that with Duggan pulling the strings for the home side, while Ciara Grant and Whelan impressed for The Reds.

On 66 minutes, Shels broke away and Rebecca Cooke looked certain to score. Before she could unleash a shot O’Gorman came out of nowhere with a superb tackle to deny her.

Two goals for O’Gorman

At the other end O’Gorman showed her class by scoring her 13th League goal of the season from a direct free-kick, after Duggan was fouled on the edge of the penalty area.

That goal gave Peamount confidence and they took advantage as Duggan got in front of her marker to head in past Shels goalkeeper Rachael Kelly.

Grant had a fantastic opportunity to level matters on 85 minutes but the Shels midfielder failed to fully connect with the ball.

With that the game slipped away from them as O’Gorman got her second of the night. She hooked the ball in from close range and that wrapped up the League win. Peamount won the title with a game to spare as they take on Wexford Youths on December 5th.

Teams

Peamount United: Reid-Burke; O’Callaghan (Barnes 90), Walsh, Farrelly, Beirne; O’Gorman, McCartan (Doyle 65), Duggan, McEvoy (Watkins 87); Ryan-Doyle; Roche (Smyth-Lynch 65).

Shelbourne: Kelly; Gleeson (Kavanagh 78), Slattery, Finn; Graham (Mooney 85); Gargan, Cooke, Grant, Ziu, Atkinson; Whelan.

Referee: Paula Brady.
