Chelsea is one of the most successful clubs in English football and some Irish players have left their mark on the team’s history

5. Paddy Mulligan (1969-1972)

Mulligan was a strong, dependable right-back throughout his long career. He is most known for his successful time with Shamrock Rovers and West Brom but also had a decent spell in London with Chelsea.

The 50-capped Irishman cost the Blues £17,500 and made a substitute appearance in the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup against Real Madrid. The Dubliner spent three years in blue, scoring two goals in 71 appearances before moving to Crystal Palace.

4. Tony Cascarino (1992-1994)

Cascarino is a very memorable name in Irish football. He had his best moments in a football shirt while playing for Millwall and much later down the line for Marseille in France.

At the midway point of his career, he joined Chelsea. The Kent-born midfielder scored 8 goals in 45 games for the club. After all this, most Irish people will remember him for the important parts he played in the Boys in Green’s runs in 1988, 1990, and 1994.

3. John Dempsey (1969-1978)

Dempsey was a legendary center half for Chelsea throughout the nine years he spent in the clubs. He had many highs, such as winning the FA Cup in 1970 and scoring the opening goals in the previously mentioned UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup final victory.

The Hampstead-born defender also stayed with the club during their turbulent spell in the 70s. He qualified for Ireland through his parents and would make 19 appearances, scoring once in six years.

He would also go on the be player-manager for Dundalk before retiring.

2. Andy Townsend (1990-1993)

In 1990, Townsend joined Chelsea for the mouth-watering sum of £1,200,000 from Norwich. He was a truly quality player and this did not affect him as he won the club’s Player of the Year award in his debut season.

Unfortunately, the Irish player never had great success with Chelsea and after 14 goals in 120 games, the midfielder moved to Aston Villa for over two million pounds.

His time in the green jersey is more storied after he scored seven goals in 70 appearances over eight years, playing in many of Ireland’s greatest matches.

1. Damien Duff (2003-2006)

Duff is one of Ireland’s most underrated footballers, a master on the wing, playing for some of England’s best teams and being a major part of Ireland’s success in 2002. In his three years at Chelsea, he played alongside Didier Drogba, Arjen Robben, and Frank Lampard.

He scored 19 goals in 125 appearances while wearing blue in London winning a Premier League title and a League Cup trophy. This made him a must-have for Ireland as he made a century of caps and scored eight goals.

At the peak of his career, Damien was famous on popular betting websites in Ireland and still remains the people’s favourite as a current manager of League of Ireland club Shelbourne F.C.

Ralph Rangnick will get his first chance to claim a win as he plays the Gunners at home in a tough midweek clash in the Premier League

Man United v Arsenal will kick off at 20:15 tonight, Thursday 2nd December in Old Trafford. Referee Martin Atkinson will take charge of the tie.

For those that could not claim a ticket, the match will also be shown live on Premier Sports ROI 1.

This week is the beginning of a transition in Manchester United. On Sunday, German manager Ralf Rangnick was officially appointed as the club’s new boss. He will need to impose his mantra quickly as the club are now three games without a wing.

The Reds team is also hampered by injuries so the new head coach will not have a full list to choose from. This important game will still be the idle moment to endear himself to the Old Trafford faithful.

Mikel Arteta has begun to build a very threatening and consistent side with the young Arsenal team. Since a poor 4-0 loss to Liverpool in November, the Gunners are on a three-game winning streak while Aaron Ramsdale has kept three clean sheets.

They sit in fifth place now but a victory will jump them ahead of West Ham United into the Champions League places. It could be some very important points for the club also resigning their rivals to the tenth place in the table.

Many would consider this fixture to be one of the historic and important matchups in the Premier Leagues’ lifetime. Two of the most successful clubs in the competition but Manchester United have a slight advantage going by statistics. The Red Devils have won 11 of their last 25 games while the Gunners have seven wins and the remaining seven are draws.

Last season was quite an uneventful year for this fixture with only one goal score in both matches combined. Arsenal won the first game away from home while the most recent game in January ended 0-0 in the Emirates Stadium.

Man United v Arsenal Match Betting

Manchester United to win: 19/20

Arsenal to win: 13/5

Score Prediction

This set up to be the biggest and most eye-watering matchup of the midweek fixtures. The match looks to be a six-pointer game that could prove important in how the European places are given out but it is hard to see a victor in this battle between Arteta and Rangnick.

Expect this game to end 1-1 with the sides sharing the points.

Leicester City travel to St Mary’s Stadium to take on Southampton on Wednesday night at 7:30 pm.

Leicester have won their last two games after going four games with a victory and will look to mount a win streak and climb the table.

Southampton, on the other hand, come into the game having been torn apart by Liverpool’s fluid football and are aiming to stop their two-game skid before it gets out of control.

Leicester’s recent upturn in fortunes has seen them rise to the top of their Europa League group and get back on track in the league.

The season has seen them start poorly as their woes from the end of last season trickled into this season.

On top of this, their old three-man defensive system leaked goals without Wesley Fofana in the eleven – Fofana is recovering from an injury.

Brendan Rodgers and his coaching staff made the decision to switch to a four-man defence six days ago for their match against Legia Warsaw and the extra man has helped them pick up two wins, albeit, conceding three goals in the process.

Southampton have looked impressive at times this season but their defence was exposed against Liverpool and massive improvements at the back will be needed if they are to stop the rot.

On the plus side, their attack has looked threatening on occasion this season but consistency is needed for success to be found – that being said, Che Adams and Adam Armstrong are finding their rhythm together.

Leicester’s Youri Tielemans will miss the game through injury while Stuart Armstrong will not be available for Ralph Hassenhuttl to select – Mo Elyounoussi and Ibrahima Diallo are however.

Teams

Southampton (4-2-2-2): McCarthy; Livramento, Bednarek, Salisu, Walker-Peters; Romeu, Ward-Prowse (C); Redmond, Tella; Armstrong, Adams.

Subs: Forster, Lyanco, Perraud, Valery, Smallbone, Elyounoussi, Djenepo, Long, Broja.

Leicester City (4-2-3-1): Schmeichel (C); Castagne, Evans, Soyuncu, Thomas; Soumaré, Ndidi; Lookman; Maddison, Barnes; Vardy.

Subs: Ward, Vestergaard, Amartey, Choudhury, Dewsbury-Hall, Albrighton, Pérez, Iheanacho, Daka.

Odds

Southampton 13/10

Draw 12/5

Leicester City 19/10

Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa host Premier League champions Manchester City at Villa Park on Wednesday night at 8:15 pm.

Villa have won two from two under their new boss, who joined the Midlands team after a successful spell in Glasgow with Rangers.

However, this will be his biggest challenge yet as he comes up against one of the generation’s greatest tactical minds – Pep Guardiola.

City sit second in the league, a point off the leaders Chelsea and a point ahead of Gerrard’s old club, Liverpool.

A win would, at the very least keep City above Jurgen Klopp and co. but if Gerrard can get a result against the league holders, he could do his former employers a favour.

The Sky Blues have recovered from their defeat to Crystal Palace with three straight wins in the league, as well as a victory over PSG to seal first place in their group in the UEFA Champions League.

However, the game against Palace showcased that City do not fare as well without a traditional striker against smaller sides as they have done against Liverpool and Chelsea.

Villa’s new pressing system under Steven Gerrard is still raw but positive work against the likes of Rodri and Joao Cancelo could swing momentum in their favour.

But City have talent and quality in excess compared to Villa and the aforementioned players will still be able to cause the problems they have been causing all season.

The Villains’ defence has looked much more uniform and impressive under Gerrard thus far and a monumental effort will be needed if they are to topple the Kings of England.

Manchester City will be without Kevin De Bruyne, Ferran Torres and Aymeric Laporte for the match, but John Stones is expected to feature.

Former Villain Jack Grealish and Phil Foden face a late fitness test before a decision is made on their status.

Danny Ings, Bertrand Traore and Trezeguet are all out for Villa.

Teams

Aston Villa (4-3-3): Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Mings (C), Targett; Nakamba, McGinn, Douglas Luiz; Bailey, Watkins, Buendia.

Subs: Steer, Hause, Tuanzebe, Young, Sanson, Ramsey, Chukwuemeka, El Ghazi, Davis.

Man City (4-3-3): Ederson; Cancelo, Dias, Ake, Zinchenko; Fernandinho (C), Rodri, Bernardo; Mahrez, Jesus, Sterling.

Subs: Steffen, Carson, Grealish, Foden, Mbete, Palmer, McAtee, Lavia, Wilson-Esbrand.

Odds

Aston Villa 7/1

Draw 7/2

Man City 4/11

Rafa Benitez and Everton welcome Liverpool to Goodison Park for the first Merseyside derby of the season on Wednesday night at 8:15 pm.

The two sides come into the game in contrasting form – Everton are winless in seven and have only scored four goals in that stretch, conceding 13 while Liverpool sit two points off the top of the Premier League table with eight goals in their last two games in the competition.

Liverpool are expected to dominate possession in the game, with Everton tending to sit back and soak up pressure in the hope of releasing counter-attacks.

Since their first loss of the season against West Ham, Liverpool have looked superb, scoring 10 in three games without reply.

The return of Andrew Robertson against Southampton at the weekend saw him showcase his fantastic on-field relationship with Diogo Jota.

Jota, Sadio Mané and Mo Salah lead the goalscoring charts in the Premier League at the moment – The Portuguese forward and Mané have seven goals to their name while Salah sits top on 11.

Liverpool are already outscoring Everton in the competition by a ratio of 2.5 to 1 while Everton have allowed almost twice as many goals.

Four of Liverpool’s players have netted more than Everton’s top scorers Demarai Gray and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who will miss the game through injury.

Everton will also be without Yerry Mina and Tom Davies for the match, as well as Mason Holgate who is suspended for his red card against Tottenham Hotspur.

However, Andre Gomes is back in training and Richarlison is available for selection again after serving a suspension.

Joe Gomez and Naby Keita are still sidelined for the Reds alongside Roberto Firmino and Curtis Jones.

Teams

Everton (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Coleman, Godfrey, Keane, Digne; Doucouré, Allan; Gray, Townsend, Richarlison; Rondon.

Subs: Begovic, Kenny, Delph, Iwobi, Tosun, Gordon, Gbamin, Branthwaite, Dobbin.

Liverpool (4-3-3): Alisson; Trent, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Thiago, Henderson; Salah, Jota, Mané.

Subs: Kelleher, Konaté, Milner, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Minamino, Tsimikas, Origi, Williams, Morton.

Everton 13/2

Draw 4/1

Liverpool 1/3

Claudio Ranieri welcomes his former club, Chelsea to Watford in this midweek clash in Round 14 of the Premier League

Watford v Chelsea will kick off at 19:30 tonight, Wednesday 1st December in the Vicarage Road Stadium. Referee David Coote will take charge of the tie.

For those that could not get tickets, the match will also be shown on Premier Sports ROI 2.

Although Watford has shown to be an impressive and exciting team so far in the Premier League season, Leeds United’s victory last night has dropped them into 17th place. A shock victory tonight could spring Ranieri’s team into 12th place.

The Hornets have become a team to kill the bigger clubs as they have already beaten Manchester United, Everton, and Aston Villa this year. Their major worry is that the team has been hit with injury concerns such as the keeper Ben Foster and star winger Emmanuel Dennis.

Tuchel will be looking at this tie with a smile on his face. Watford has not kept a clean sheet in 12 matches while Chelsea has the most with eight. This is the club’s best chance to open the gap between themselves, Manchester City, and Liverpool after their 1-1 draw with Man United at the weekend.

This will also be a good opportunity to pick up points on the road while some of their major players recover such as Ngolo Kanté, Mateo Kovacic, and Ben Chilwell.

This has become a one-sided affair in the last six years as the Blues have won eight of their last 11 games. There have also been two draws between the two sides while Watford has managed one solitary victory in 2018.

They most recently faced each other in July 2020 as Chelsea ran out 3-0 victors and Watford were later relegated.

Watford v Chelsea Probable Starting Teams

Watford

Formation

4-3-3

Probable Starting 11

Bachmann (GK), Rose, Troost-Ekong, Cathcart, Kiko, Sissoko, Louza, Cleverly, King, Fletcher, Hernández.

Injuries / Suspensions

Foster (Groin), Dennis (Knock), Sierralta (Hamstring), Sarr (Knee), Sema (Knee), Baah (Ankle), N’Koulou (Hamstring), Etebo (Thigh), Kucka (Knee)

Chelsea

Formation

3-4-2-1

Probable Starting 11

Mendy (GK), Rudiger, Christensen, Chalobah, Alonso, Jorginho, Saul, Azpilicueta, Pulisic, Mount, Havertz.

Injuries / Suspensions

Chilwell (Cruciate ligament), Kovacic (Hamstring), Kanté (Knee), Werner (Muscle injury)

Watford v Chelsea Match Betting

Watford to win: 9/1

Draw: 9/2

Chelsea to win: 2/7

Score Prediction

Coming into this match, it seems like a free hit for Tuchel’s Chelsea. The Hornet’s large injury list and the Blues continued strong form seem to show that the game can only go one way. Although Watford will try to put up a fight at home expect them to still lose by a hefty margin.

Expect the game to end 3-0 to Chelsea.

Marcelo Bielsa welcomes Patrick Viera’s impressive Crystal Palace side to West Yorkshire in this Round 14 midweek clash in the Premier League

Leeds v Crystal Palace will kick-off at 20:15 tonight, Tuesday 30th November in Elland Road. Referee Kevin Friend will take charge of the tie.

Bielsa will finally be happy when he saw his star striker Patrick Bamford return to training this weekend. The English forward is also accompanied by Luke Ayling as Robin Koch is the only player remaining on the injury list.

Leeds still sits just above the relegation zone after drawing against Brighton at the weekend. The Whites will soon be in dire need of their third win of the season and Bielsa will be looking for it tonight.

Crystal Palace has become a surprising force in the Premier League this year since Patrick Viera was named manager. They sit in 11th place only four points off the sixth spot but also only four points above 17th place Leeds.

At the weekend, they lost out to Steven Gerrards Aston Villa team 2-1. Despite this loss, they are undefeated in the seven other matches, scoring nine goals in five games. Youngster Conor Gallagher has proven to be their shining light this year and an early contender for Young Player of the Year.

This has been a tense and even matchup over the last decade. They have faced each other eight times between the Premier League and Championship since 2010. Leeds United has won four of the ties, while two games have ended in draws and Crystal Palace won two.

Last season the two teams split the points with a win at home each. They last played in February where the Whites won 2-0.

Leeds v Crystal Palace Probable Starting Teams

Leeds United

Formation

Crystal Palace

Formation

Guaita (GK), Mitchell, Guehi, Tomkins, Ward, Kouyaté, Milivojevic, Gallagher, Eze, Benteke, Zaha.

Leeds v Crystal Palace Match Betting

Leeds United to win: 7/5

Draw: 9/4

Crystal Palace to win: 2/1

Score Prediction

Home advantage will play a big part in this fixture as the Elland Road faithful will drive on a nearly full-strength team. For one of the first times this season, Marcelo Bielsa will have a full team to pick from and it will show in their energy and speed.

Expect this game to end 3-2 to Leeds United.

Thomas Tuchel takes on Michael Carrick in the match of the weekend with the Reds needing a win off the league leaders

Chelsea v Man United will kick off at 16:30 on Sunday 28th November in Stamford Bridge. Referee Anthony Taylor will take charge of the tie.

For those who could not get a ticket, the match will also be shown live on Sky Sports Premier League Ireland.

Chelsea have continued their strong run since losing to Juventus in September. Tuchel’s side are now 10 games unbeaten with only two of those games being draws. They continue to sit on top of the league, three points ahead of Liverpool and Manchester City.

The squad survived well with their first bout of injuries but now with the return of Lukaku and Pulisic, the club is now missing Kovacic, Kanté, and Chilwell for the foreseeable future.

On the other side of the pitch, Manchester United have grown into a joke team in the Premier League. After a bad spell of results, they languish in eighth place, six points off a Champions League place.

Now with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer departed from the club, it looks like Ralf Rangnick will take charge. It will be interesting to see if he can get the most out of the stars as well as the young guns.

This fixture is one of the most long-awaited and hotly contested games of the year. They have faced each other 33 times since 2010 with Man United winning the slight majority with 12 victories. Chelsea have claimed 11 wins while ten games have also ended in draws.

Although this is a matchup of two of the most successful Premier League clubs, it has been a boring affair of late. Last season, both games ended in uneventful 0-0 stalemates.

Now both teams have different managers and styles so this match will depend much more on recent form.

Chelsea v Man United Probable Starting Teams

Chelsea v Man United Match Betting

Chelsea FC to win: 4/7

Draw: 14/5

Manchester United to win: 9/2

Score Prediction

United fans might be in high spirits with the new interim managerial appointment but it will be too soon for Michael Carrick and Rangnick to make a difference in Manchester. Chelsea have the stronger team and clearer tactics and this will shine through at the weekend.

Expect the game to end 4-1 to Chelsea.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men are looking in trouble near the relegation zone as they travel to Brighton this weekend in the Premier League

Brighton v Leeds United will kick off at 17:30 on Saturday 27th November in the American Express Community Stadium. Referee Craig Pawson will take charge of the tie.

The match will also be shown live on Sky Sports Premier League Ireland.

Graham Potters’ Brighton side began the season as a surprise package but form has not been on their side recently. They are now seven games without a win but they have also managed five draws in that time.

Last week they lost 2-0 away to Aston Villa and now they lie in ninth place, level on points with Man United. They will now be without their striker, Danny Welbeck so Potter will likely rely on Neal Maupay and Leandro Trossard for goals.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side are suffering from second-season syndrome as the team sits in 17th place only two points in the clear. The Argentine will need to change his team’s fortunes in the next three games before they go into a very challenging Christmas period.

Last week, a weakened side put it up to Antonio Conte’s Tottenham team but lost 2-1. On Saturday, they will again rely heavily on Daniel James and Kalvin Phillips as they wait for stars to return from injury.

This has become a common fixture in the last decade between the Premier League and Championship. Brighton has been the stronger of the two teams having won 10 of the 14 games. Two games have ended in draws and the Whites have been victorious twice.

The Seagulls did the double over Leeds last season keeping a clean sheet in both games, including a 2-0 win at home in May.

Although Bielsa’s side has struggled a lot at getting results in the league this year, they have managed to make each game a challenge for their opponents. This will be a very close affair, only decided by the smallest of margins.

Expect the game to end 2-1 to Brighton with the home advantage playing a factor.

The Gunners have finally been beaten, ending their long run but Arteta will want to get back on track against bottom-table Newcastle this weekend

Arsenal v Newcastle United will kick off at 12:30 on Saturday 27th November in the Emirates Stadium. Referee Stuart Atwell will take charge of the tie.

Mikel Arteta’s ten-game unbeaten spell came to an end last week after they were beaten 4-0 by Liverpool. The Gunners were outclassed throughout the field but Aaron Ramsdale still managed to have a strong game between the sticks.

The London Reds will want to forget about that match and move onto this week’s fixture as quickly as possible. They currently sit in fifth place in the league, three points off West Ham in front of them. A win will be crucial for Arsenal this weekend in their fight for European football next year.

Newcastle, on the other hand, might not be playing Premier League football next year. They dwell on the bottom of the table, five points from safety. They are the only team left without a victory this season but they have claimed three draws in their last four matches.

In brighter news, the Magpie’s new manager Eddie Howe will be in the dugout for them tomorrow. Their next three games will be vital for them to pick up points before they go into a tough run of matches.

This has been a long and one-sided fixture over the last decade. In recent history, these two teams have played each other 22 times with the Gunners winning on a whopping 18 occasions. Two games have ended in draws while Newcastle were victorious twice, most recently in 2018.

Another worrying stat for the Magpies is that they have lost and failed to score in the last six games of this matchup. They played in May in which Arsenal were 2-0 winners away from home.

Arsenal v Newcastle United Match Betting

Arsenal to win: 4/9

Draw: 7/2

Newcastle United to win: 11/2

Score Prediction

A European hopeful against a team struggling to survive, there is basically only one way this game can go. It would be hard to see this Newcastle side pulling a shock away from home against an Arsenal side looking to claim three easy points.

Expect this game to end 3-0 to Arsenal.
